The legendary label “So What”, which received tremendous trust from Miles Davis lovers and produced numerous masterpieces. Under the complete supervision of the “So What” label, “Voodoo Down Records (hereafter VDD)” was launched at the end of 2020. The fact that we were allowed to list the label name of “SO WHAT!” For the first time shows the depth of trust. Careful mastering, editing, discerning artwork with obi, and a beautiful picture disc press board. Although it is a new label, it is already attracting attention as a must-have item for Miles collectors.
This release is a studio session for the first time in a long time. This is a collection of sessions for the famous “Seven Steps to Heaven”. We are using a super valuable master that was officially handed over from the “So What” label, not something that was sold on the net. The session here contains three sessions of “SEVEN STEPS TO HEAVEN”, “SO NEAR, SO FAR” and “JOSHUA” recorded in “Seven Steps to Heaven”. Are also the highlights of “Seven Steps to Heaven”. A session was held in LA with Miles, George Coleman, Victor Feldman, Ron Carter, Frank Butler, etc. About a month later, the piano was replaced by Herbie Hancock and the drums were replaced by Tony Williams. Try again in NY. As you know, the result is that the latter performance was recorded on the album. Initially, it was released separately on 1 CDR each as “LA Session” and “NY Session” from the “So What” label, but this time on the “Voodoo Down” label, Disc 1 is “LA Side” and Disc 2 is. Coupling as “NY side”. The sound quality of the LA side, where the volume was a little unstable, has been improved considerably. Furthermore, on both sides, the track has been re-cut into small pieces for each important session, and it is edited so that you can skip chats and sound checks and enjoy only the “musical” parts. Furthermore, the order of the songs on the “LA side” has been changed to the same order as the “NY side”, “Seven Steps to Heaven”, making it even easier to listen to and compare. And of course, the “Voodoo Down” label is a press record. This is the final definitive edition. With all these new improvements, those who have a “So What” board will also need to buy a new one.

マイルス・デイヴィスの愛好家から絶大の信頼を受け、数々の名盤を生み出した伝説のレーベル“ソー・ホワット”。その“ソー・ホワット”レーベルの完全監修を受け、2020年末に発足したのが“ヴードゥーダウン・レコーズ（以後VDD）”です。初めて“SO WHAT!”のレーベル名を記載することを許可されたことからも信頼の厚さがうかがえます。丁寧なマスタリング、編集、こだわりの帯付アートワーク、美麗なピクチャー・ディスクのプレス盤。新鋭レーベルながら早くもマイルス・コレクター必携アイテムとして注目を集めています。
今回のリリースは久しぶりにスタジオ・セッションもの。名盤『セヴン・ステップス・トゥ・ヘヴン』のセッション集です。ネット等で出回ったものでなく、正式に“ソー・ホワット”レーベルより譲り受けた超貴重なマスターを使用しています。ここのセッションは『セヴン・ステップス・トゥ・ヘヴン』に収録される『SEVEN STEPS TO HEAVEN』『SO NEAR, SO FAR』『JOSHUA』の3曲のセッションが収録されているわけですが、これらはいずれも『セヴン・ステップス・トゥ・ヘヴン』のハイライトとなる名曲達。LAでマイルス、ジョージ・コールマン、ヴィクター・フェルドマン、ロン・カーター、フランク・バトラーといった編成でセッションが行われたのですが、それから約１ヵ月経ってピアノをハービー・ハンコック、ドラムスをトニー・ウィリアムスに入れ替えNYで再度トライ。結果はご存知の通り後者の演奏がアルバムに収録されるに至ったわけです。当初“ソー・ホワット”レーベルより『LAセッション』、『NYセッション』として各1CDRで別々にリリースされていたものですが、今回“ヴードゥー・ダウン”レーベルではディスク1を“LAサイド”、ディスク2を“NYサイド”としてカップリング。やや音量が不安定だったLAサイドはかなり音質面が改良されました。更にどちらのサイドも改めてトラックが重要なセッションごと細かく切り直され、チャットやサウンド・チェックなどを飛ばして“音楽的”な箇所だけ楽しむ事もできる編集になっています。更に更に“LAサイド”は曲順を入れ替え“NYサイド”と同じ『セヴン・ステップス・トゥ・ヘヴン』の順になり、一層聴き比べやすくなっています。そしてもちろん“ヴードゥー・ダウン”レーベルはプレス盤。これが最終決定版です。これだけ新たな改良が加われば“ソー・ホワット”盤をお持ちの方も買い替え必須です。
