Giant METALLICA started to move as the scene came back to life. Introducing a video work that allows you to witness the first night, which has spread the topic around the world.
The first night is “September 16, 2021”. This work cannot be put away in one word, such as a professional shot taken at a surprise gig at the live house “THE INDEPENDENT” in San Francisco. The quality is definitely transcendental and superb, but the taste and the lid are different from the previous video works. Moreover, not only the video but also the show itself is super individual. To explain step by step, let’s first look at their current situation.

This is the 2021/2022 schedule that has been known so far. We’ve also had some live performances since February, all of which were unattended videos delivered by the new Corona Pandemic. It was this work that they played in public for the first time in about two years (738 days). Moreover, this show is a complete surprise. Immediately before, the following announcement suddenly flowed, and the limited 500 tickets were sold out in about 13 minutes.
“Hey, I have a little secret. I’m playing at” THE INDEPENDENT “in downtown San Francisco tonight. Bring a $ 20 bill and come to the ticket office right now. Tickets for each person Cash payment only. You will also need proof of vaccination to enter. It may sell out soon. ”
As usual, the sound board was downloaded and sold on livemetallica.com, and the multi-camera pro shots of “Whiplash” and “Creeping Death” were also released. This work is a video work produced by an overseas enthusiast, and in addition to the sound board / pro shot mentioned above, it also makes full use of various audience shots. As a matter of fact, 4 songs may be still images because there is no video, but other than that, they are super-high quality. The audio is completely an official sound board, and the audience shots for 10 songs are super beautiful. After all, the site is a club gig that can accommodate only 500 people. There are shots on the right and left sides of the stage, but both are in the front row, and they are so close that you can touch four people if you reach out. In fact, the two songs “Whiplash” and “Creeping Death” are genuine official professional shots, but even if you look at them continuously, there is almost no discomfort, just the difference between one camera and multiple cameras.

… And it looks like this. Of the 16 songs in the full set, 2 are multi-cameras, 10 are super close-ups on the first day, and 4 are still images. Except for the club-scale ultra-narrow stage, as usual … I don’t know from the above, but the opening is actually a point. The first song selected for the first time in about two years was the eternal slash anthem “Whiplash”. The show that starts with this super-masterpiece is actually the first in history. Speaking of METALLICA, it is a band that has tried all kinds of tastes with elaborate ideas, but there is still new material left. Moreover, this is insanely addicted to pole position. The ruggedness that starts with the count of “One, two, one, two, three four !!” from the drum intro is like a live band, and suddenly it runs fast and blows away the frustration of two years. Why haven’t we done such a cool opening until now … It makes me wonder.
METALLICA, the biggest live band in history and the biggest in the scene. The monster is back on the stage it should be. It is a video work that you can enjoy the one and only stage with super individuality and super super quality. The site of the club where metal people from all over the world wanted to be present. ★ The best video work of “September 16, 2021 San Francisco performance” for the first time in 738 days. その第一夜とは「2021年９月16日」。地元サンフランシスコのライヴハウス“THE INDEPENDENT”で行われたサプライズ・ギグで撮影されたプロショット……と、一言で片付けられないのが本作。クオリティは間違いなく超絶＆極上には違いないものの、これまでの映像作品とはひと味もふた味も異なるのです。しかも、映像だけでなくショウ自体も超個性派。順を追ってご説明するためにも、まずは彼らの現状から見てみましょう。

これが現在までに判明している2021年／2022年のスケジュール。２月からいくつかのライヴ・パフォーマンスも行っていましたが、それらはすべて新型コロナ・パンデミックによる無観客の配信動画でした。そんな彼らが約２年（738日）ぶりに人前で演奏したのが本作でした。しかも、このショウは完全なサプライズ。直前になって突然以下のような告知が流れ、限定500名のチケットが約13分で完売しました。
「おい、ちょっとした秘密があるんだ。今夜、サンフランシスコのダウンタウンにある“THE INDEPENDENT”で演奏するんだ。20ドル札を持って、今すぐチケット売り場に来てくれ。チケットは１人一枚で現金払いのみ。入場するにはワクチン接種の証明も必要だ。すぐに売り切れるかもな」
その模様はいつものようにlivemetallica.comでサウンドボードがダウンロード販売された他、「Whiplash」と「Creeping Death」のマルチカメラ・プロショットも公開されました。本作は海外マニアが制作した映像作品で、前述のサウンドボード／プロショットの他、各種オーディエンス・ショットも駆使したものなのです。実のところ、４曲分は映像がないために静止画だったりもしますが、それ以外は超・極上クオリティ。音声は完全にオフィシャル・サウンドボードですし、10曲分のオーディエンス・ショットも超美麗。何しろ、現場は500人しか入れないクラブ・ギグ。ステージ右側・左側のショットがあるのですが、どちらもほぼ最前列でして、手を伸ばせば４人に触れそうなほどの超間近なのです。実際、「Whiplash」「Creeping Death」の２曲は正真正銘の公式プロショットなのですが、連続して見ていても１カメかマルチカメラかの違いだけで、ほとんど違和感がないのです。

……と、このようになっています。フルセット全16曲中２曲がマルチカメラで、10曲が１日目超接写、４曲が静止画となっています。クラブ規模の超狭いステージ以外はいつも通り……かと思いきや、さにあらず。上記では分かりませんが、実はオープニングもポイント。約２年ぶりとなる１曲目に選ばれたのは、永遠のスラッシュ・アンセム「Whiplash」。この超名曲で開演するショウは、実は歴史上初なのです。METALLICAと言えば、アイディアを凝らしてありとあらゆる趣向を試してきたバンドですが、まだ新ネタが残っていたとは。しかも、これがポールポジションにめちゃくちゃハマッている。ドラムイントロから「One, two, one, two, three four!!」のカウントで始まる無骨さがライヴバンド然としていますし、いきなり激走で２年のフラストレーションをぶっ飛ばしてくれる。なんでこんな格好いいオープニングを今までやってこなかったのか……その方が不思議になってくるほどです。
