The early MEGADETH that created the two masterpieces that changed historians, “KILLING IS MY BUSINESS … AND BUSINESS IS GOOD!” And “PEACE SELLS … BUT WHO’S BUYING?”. The top soundboard of the quartet (Mustaine / Elefson / Poland / Samuelson), which is also called METALLICA in the Cliff Burton era, is now available on a permanent preservation press CD.
[PEACE SELLS era … No, the pinnacle sound board of the 80’s] The engraving on this work is “March 6, 1987 Hammersmith Odeon Performance”. This is a stereo sound board recording recorded in the first act of “WAKE UP DEAD World Tour” accompanying the 2nd album. Speaking of 1987, the legendary first visit to Japan was realized, and there was a change to Jeff Young / Chuck Behler on the way. This is MEGADETH in 1986/1987. Speaking of live albums at that time, Cleveland SBD, which became a bonus disc for the 25th anniversary of “PEACE SELLS”, is also famous, but that was “June 3” after the first visit to Japan. It’s easy to confuse the dates, but the Hammersmith performance of this work was the first day of the “Europe” leg, one month before coming to Japan. This “Europe” is MEGADETH’s first overseas tour. In other words, what is permanently preserved in this work is the best historical show that crosses the sea.
Also, this show is known to have been broadcast on FM, and it is a big classic among the classics that sound board recording has produced many existing episodes from the old days of the analog era. It was also the most famous sound board in the early MEGADETH. This work brushes up the best master, which is said to be the longest and highest peak. It is one that has been permanently preserved with the highest quality that can be expected in 2021.
The highest peak master appeared in 2016. The longest, best-sounding soundboard master ever unearthed (strictly speaking, there are longer masters due to adulterants with AUD recordings and pitch deviations, but this is the longest pure soundboard). Some of you may know it because it came to Japan as a half official board “LIVE ON AIR”. The quality improvement was amazing, not only dismissing the existing group on the same day, but also overtaking all the early sound boards. It has reigned as the formalized “Cleveland SBD and the Top of the Two Tops”.
The effect is enormous. Even at the excavation stage in 2016, it was named alongside the official Cleveland SBD, but this work has updated the highest peak at once. If you’re a maniac, you might be delighted with the live disc of the 25th anniversary edition “PEACE SELLS”, but you might have sighed at the lump sound, “Is this the limit even if it’s official?” In this work, you can enjoy the “true official sound” that wipes out that resignation at once!
And what is drawn on the highest peak sound board is the fierce intellectual slash of the legendary “Chris Poland & Gar Samuelson” era. There can be no match with this work other than the official sound board, so let’s organize it while comparing it here.

The repertoire unique to “the four people” such as “Killing Is My Business”, “Last Rites / Loved to Death” and “Bad Omen” is delicious, but the performance itself is more than that. The strange mood that is completely different from the consistency of the “Marty & Nick” era is the highest. I’m not good at talking about crazy things, but that’s why the feeling of self-defeating explosion is a mass of initial impulses. Mustaine also has more liquor than usual, but the performance runs without hesitation. It’s a tremendous live that survives even complicated song development with just momentum.
It was the first day of global expansion, and this was a sensation. Why is the “Poland & Samuelson” era so special? It is a sound board album that puts the reason on thrash metal that exceeds a thousand words and pours it directly into the brain. そんな本作に刻まれているのは「1987年３月６日ハマースミス・オデオン公演」。2ndアルバムに伴う“WAKE UP DEAD World Tour”の一幕で記録されたステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。1987年と言えば、伝説の初来日も実現しましたし、途中でジェフ・ヤング／チャック・ビーラーへの交代も発生。その辺の事情を理解する意味でも、当時のスケジュールを振り返りつつ、ショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが1986年／1987年のMEGADETH。当時のライヴアルバムと言えば『PEACE SELLS』25周年盤のボーナス・ディスクともなったクリーヴランドSBDも有名ですが、あれは初来日後の“６月３日”。日付が混同されがちですが、本作のハマースミス公演は来日の１ヶ月前となる「欧州」レッグの初日でした。この「欧州」はMEGADETHにとって初の海外ツアー。つまり、本作に永久保存されているのは海を越えたイの一番となる歴史的なショウなのです。
また、このショウはFM放送された事でも知られ、アナログ時代の昔からサウンドボード録音が幾多の既発を生み出して来た定番中の大定番。初期MEGADETHでもっとも有名なサウンドボードでもありました。本作は、その最長・最高峰とされるベスト・マスターをブラッシュアップ。2021年で望み得る最高のクオリティで永久保存した１枚なのです。
その最高峰マスタ?が登場したのは2016年。それまでで最も長く、音質の良いサウンドボード・マスターが発掘された（厳密にはAUD録音との混ぜ物やピッチの狂いでもっと長いマスターもありますが、純然たるサウンドボードでは本作が最長）。ハーフオフィシャル盤『LIVE ON AIR』として日本にも入ってきたのでご存知の方もいらっしゃるのではないでしょうか。そのクオリティ・アップぶりは驚異的で、同日の既発群を一蹴してしまっただけでなく、初期のあらゆるサウンドボードをごぼう抜き。公式化された「クリーヴランドSBDと２トップの頂点」として君臨してしまったのです。
【独自マスタリングで更なるアップグレード】
しかし、このマスターも完璧ではなかった。曲順が大幅に変えられており、サウンドやバランスも曲によって（微妙に）変化していたのです。本作では、そうした欠点を補修。ジャストなピッチは当然として、曲順をライヴ本番通りに整え、バラつきを統一化しました。そして、その上で全体のサウンドも・クオリティ・アップ。高音から重低音まで各音域ごとに整理しなおし、輪郭をよりクッキリと浮き立たせ、楽器同士のスキマも鮮やかなビビッド・サウンドに仕上げたのです。
その効果は絶大。2016年の発掘段階でも公式クリーヴランドSBDと並び称されていたわけですが、本作は一気に最高峰を更新している。マニアの方なら25周年盤『PEACE SELLS』のライヴ・ディスクに歓喜しつつも、塊サウンドに「やはり公式でもこれが限界か……」と溜息を漏らされたのではないでしょうか。本作は、その諦めを一気に払拭する「真なる公式級サウンド」を楽しめるのです！

……と、このようになっています。「Killing Is My Business」「Last Rites/Loved to Death」「Bad Omen」など、“あの４人”ならではのレパートリーも美味しいですが、それ以上なのが演奏そのもの。「マーティ＆ニック」時代の整合感とはまったく異なる異様なムードが最っ高。ぶっちゃけた話が巧くないんですが、だからこそ醸される自棄っぱちな爆走感は初期衝動の塊。ムステインも酒が入っているのかいつも以上に舌っ足らずなのに、演奏はお構いなしに突っ走る。ただでさえ複雑な曲展開を勢いだけで乗り切っていく凄まじいライヴなのです。
