Speaking of reels as a live sound source of ZEP in 1972, it is a core ZEP collector in our country who provided the shocking releases “CHARLOTTE 1972 REEL ARCHIVES” and “TUCSON 1972 REEL ARCHIVES” which are on sale with great popularity. If it was him, it would make sense that he would cover up to the warm-up before the start of the tour. Because he provided a treasured reel, Amsterdam in 1972 was released as an upper version rather than a recurrence of the already released board.
However, this reel also has the same cuts seen in the release group including the already-launched board. The obvious tape change that the beginning of ” has not been recorded will not change this time. I can’t do anything about this. However, the fact that the clear upper feeling is transmitted again this time is that the distortion seen in the already released board has been clearly reduced and it has become much easier to hear. The same phenomenon was also seen in “TUCSON 1972 REEL ARCHIVES”, but it is nothing but that the condition of the reel was better than the version spread on the net.
When “EUROPEAN WARM UP SHOWS 1972” was released, both recordings had a strong vintage feel, but Amsterdam was the one with the “listenable” quality. In this reel version, it has finally evolved to an “easy to hear” level. Currently, the latest transfer and Oshiki version are appearing on YouTube, but it is even easier to hear than that. In addition, the sound quality itself makes me feel fresher than the already-launched board, and this kind of place is the unique power of the reel.
And as I mentioned at the time of the release of “EUROPEAN WARM ~”, the opening “Immigrant Song” captures Robert’s wake-up tone, but this is the last tour where his scream voice was clear. A pre-launch gig in America. In that case, the voice is sharper than the main part of the tour, and the youth is still saying things. Thanks to this, the situation where that sharp screaming immediately regained its condition is also clearly transmitted by this upper version. ZEPがアメリカ・ツアー開始前に行った1972年アムステルダムでのウォームアップ・ギグと言えば翌日のブリュッセルとのカップリングにてリリースされた名盤「EUROPEAN WARM UP SHOWS 1972」がSold Outとなってしまい、その再リリースもマニアから望まれていたところでした。そろそろ本気で再発を検討していたところでした。とはいっても元があのようなビンテージ・オーディエンスでしたので、そのままでの再リリースとなる…悪い言い方ですと手の施しようがなかったと言っていいかもしれません。
ところが、このタイミングで思わぬ伏兵が登場。72年アムステルダムのリール・テープが提供されたのです！72年ZEPのライブ音源にしてリールと言えばそうです、大好評発売中である衝撃のリリース「CHARLOTTE 1972 REEL ARCHIVES」と「TUCSON 1972 REEL ARCHIVES」を提供してくれた我が国のコアZEPコレクター。彼であればツアー開始前のウォームアップまで網羅してくれたというのも合点がいくというもの。彼が秘蔵のリールを提供してくれたことで72年アムステルダムが既発盤の再発ではなく、あくまでアッパー版としてのリリースと相成りました。
もっとも今回のリールも既発盤を始めとしたリリース群で見られたカットに関しては同一で、中でも「Stairway To Heaven」がギター・ソロの最中でカットとなり、次の「Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp」の序盤が未収録というあからさまなテープ・チェンジは今回も変わりません。こればかりはどうしようもない。ところが、今回もまたはっきりとしたアッパー感が伝わってくるのは、既発盤に見られた歪みがはっきり減少して随分と聞きやすくなってくれたということ。同じ現象は「TUCSON 1972 REEL ARCHIVES」においてもみられましたが、やはりネット上に広まっているバージョンよりもリールの状態が秀でていたということに他ならない。
「EUROPEAN WARM UP SHOWS 1972」がリリースされた際、どちらもビンテージ感が強い録音状態であった訳ですが、その中で「聞ける」クオリティだったのは俄然アムステルダム。それが今回のリール・バージョンでは、いよいよ「聞きやすい」レベルにまで進化を遂げたのです。現在YouTube上には最新トランスファーとおぼしきバージョンが現れていますが、それと比べてもさらに聞きやすくなっている。さらに音質自体も既発盤と比べて一皮むけたような鮮度を感じさせてくれ、こういうところこそ流石リールならではの威力かと。
そして「EUROPEAN WARM～」リリース時にも述べたように、オープニング「Immigrant Song」こそロバートのまるで寝起きのような調子が捉えられてしまっていますが、これは彼のスクリーム・ボイスが冴え渡った最後のツアーであるアメリカの開始前のギグ。となればツアー本編以上に声が鋭く、まだまだ若さがモノを言っている。おかげですぐにあの切れ味鋭いスクリーミングが調子を取り戻してくれた状況も今回のアッパー版によってさらにはっきり伝わってきます。その点ではこの日が文字通りウォーミング・アップの役割を果たしたと言え、以降のロバートは余裕の歌いっぷり。
何しろ既発盤と比べて一皮むけたような状態ですので、なおさらエンジンのかかり具合が解りやすい。また残された当日の写真を見るとロバートとジミーがそれぞれに髭を剃らずステージに上がっており、ルックス面においても「ウォームアップ」であったと言えるのではないでしょうか。
しかし演奏の方はロバートだけでなくジミーもあっという間にエンジン全開。それどころか彼のプレイの冴え渡る様子など、もやはウォームアップとは思えないほどで、この辺りのフットワークの軽さがまた72年上半期らしい。中でも「Dazed And Confused」は面白い。この後のツアーでは名物となる「The Crunge」パターンが定着しておらず、この時点ではまだボンゾがリズムを叩いて場つなぎするだけにとどまってしまいます。彼は既に前年のUKツアーからこのパターンを試していましたが、まだジミーによる「The Crunge」への橋渡しとなるリフは生み出されていなかった。やはりアメリカ・ツアーでは恒例となる「Walter’s Walk」のパターンも現れません。
代わりにこの日のジミーは全体を通してやたらと弾きまくっており、それこそ後につながるアイデアをここで模索しているかのよう。定型パターンが決まっていないにもかかわらず、それでいて非常にテンションの高い演奏となっているのがこの日の魅力なのです。こうした側面も既発盤ではマニアでないと感じられなかった場面だといえ、今回のアッパー版によって「既にこれほどまでアツい演奏をしていたのか？」と再認識されること請け合い（「Rock And Roll」終了後にアンコールを求める声がまた凄まじい！）。世界中のマニアに衝撃を与えることになった72年シャーロットとトゥーソンに続き、今度はウォームアップのアムステルダムが生まれ変わりました！
