“THE SOUL / PHILLY DOGS Tour” where I met my ally Carlos Almar and woke up to soul music. The legendary recording that tells the rare tour, which is also the unexplored region of the sound source, is reprinted on the 2nd press CD.
The legendary recording recorded “November 18, 1974 Philadelphia performance”. It is the best audience recording. Speaking of “Philadelphia in 1974”, the official live album “DAVID LIVE” comes to mind first (to be exact, Upper Darby), but this work is a completely different performance. This is the first act of “THE SOUL / PHILLY DOGS Tour”, which is the final stage of “DIAMOND DOGS Tour”. And this “THE SOUL / PHILLY DOGS Tour” is an important time known as Bowie’s turning point. Therefore, we have archived in detail with many masterpiece recordings, but this work stands at the top. Anyway, first of all, the position of the show. “THE SOUL / PHILLY DOGS TOUR”

This is Bowie in 1974. Although all of the “DIAMOND DOGS Tour” were performed in North America, they are roughly divided into three legs, and only “North America # 3” is also known as “THE SOUL / PHILLY DOGS Tour”. Even though it is a Philadelphia performance, the official version “DAVID LIVE” is the early stage “North America # 1”, and this work is the final version “North America # 3”.
Also, this “North America # 3” is different from “North America # 1-2” because it has a new tour name. “North America # 1” was a show that conveys the scent of “DIAMOND DOGS” to the stage, but after that, we started producing “YOUNG AMERICANS” as soon as possible. Bowie, who welcomed Carlos Alomar here, quickly devoted himself to soul music. We will also throw a huge stage set, which was said to be the largest at that time, to make a bold turn. Then, after “North America # 2”, the devotion to Seoul accelerated and entered the transformed “North America # 3”. Not only will new songs from “YOUNG AMERICANS” be unveiled, but a large number of soul-conscious arrangements will be introduced for past masterpieces. The members are also different, and in addition to Carlos mentioned above, the rhythm section has been replaced by Willie Weeks and Dennis Davis. A large number of “YOUNG AMERICANS” members such as lovers Ava Cherry, Robin Clark, and Luther Vandross at that time also participated in the backing vocals. A total of 14 people are facing the big family. This work is the best live album to experience such “North America # 3” in the field.
Actually, the sound is shocking. Although it is a master newly excavated in 2017, the terrifyingly clear and intense direct feeling is almost sound board grade. Bold and thick performances and singing voices roar, and there is almost no audience noise. When it first appeared in 2017, enthusiasts from all over the world were shaken by this sound. As a matter of fact, at that time, there were several other masters of the same live, including a ton demo board that connected the “Cracked Actor” of the official “DAVID LIVE”. Under such circumstances, we use the best master supervised by the world authority of Bowie research, and also carry out meticulous mastering. The left and right stereo balance, which was crazy with the original sound source, was adjusted, and the pitch of “Rebel Rebel”, which was a little low, was corrected accurately. Finished in the best possible board. As a result, it has become a monument to the extent that overseas enthusiasts say, “Philadelphia 74 is safe with the Wardour version.”

Therefore, this work is one step behind in terms of the number of songs, but more important than that is the experience of the show. Because it is an audience recording, you can feel the reality of being “on the spot” and feel the mood of the show where each song is layered. And the reborn performance is also wonderful. “John, I’m Only Dancing (Again)” and “1984” with funky rhythms, “Rock’n’Roll With Me”, “Can You Hear Me” and “Somebody Up” “There Likes Me” is also valuable. その伝説録音に記録されているのは「1974年11月18日フィラデルフィア公演」。その極上オーディエンス録音です。「1974年のフィラデルフィア」と言えば、真っ先に公式ライヴアルバム『DAVID LIVE』が浮かびます（正確にはアッパーダービー）が、本作はまったくの別公演。“DIAMOND DOGS Tour”でも末期にあたる“THE SOUL/PHILLY DOGS Tour”の一幕です。そして、この“THE SOUL/PHILLY DOGS Tour”こそ、ボウイのターニング・ポイントとして知られる重要な時期。そのため、当店では数々の傑作録音で詳しくアーカイヴしてきましたが、その頂点に立つのが本作なのです。ともあれ、まずはショウのポジション。当時の流れをカンタンにおさらいしてみましょう。

これが1974年のボウイ。“DIAMOND DOGS Tour”はすべて北米公演だったものの、大きく３レッグに分けられ「北米#3」のみ別名“THE SOUL/PHILLY DOGS Tour”とも呼ばれている。フィラデルフィア公演とは言っても、公式盤『DAVID LIVE』は序盤の「北米#1」であり、本作は最終盤「北米#3」なのです。
また、この「北米#3」は新たなツアー名が冠されるだけあって内容も「北米#1-2」とは異なっている。「北米#1」はまさしく『DIAMOND DOGS』の薫りをステージに伝えるショウでしたが、その後に早くも『YOUNG AMERICANS』の制作に着手。ここでカルロス・アロマーを迎えたボウイは、急速にソウル・ミュージックへ傾倒。当時最大規模と言われた巨大なステージセットも投げ打って、大胆な方向転換を図るのです。そして、「北米#2」を経てソウルへの傾倒は加速し、様変わりした「北米#3」へと突入。『YOUNG AMERICANS』の新曲が披露されるだけでなく、過去の名曲もソウルを意識したアレンジを大量に導入。メンバーも異なり、先述のカルロスに加えてリズム隊はウィリー・ウィークスやデニス・デイビスに交代。バックヴォーカルにも当時の恋人アヴァ・チェリーやロビン・クラーク、ルーサー・ヴァンドロスなど、『YOUNG AMERICANS』メンバーが大挙参加。総勢14名に及ぶ大所帯で臨んでいる。本作は、そんな「北米#3」を現場体験するのに最高のライヴアルバムなのです。
実際、そのサウンドは衝撃的。2017年に新発掘されたマスターなのですが、恐ろしくクリアで強烈なダイレクト感はほとんどサウンドボード級。骨太にして肉厚な演奏と歌声が轟き、オーディエンス・ノイズがほとんどないのです。2017年の初登場時には、このサウンドに世界中のマニアが震撼。実のところ、当時は同じライヴの別マスターも幾つか出回り、中には公式『DAVID LIVE』の「Cracked Actor」を繋げたトンデモ盤までありました。そんな中で当店ではボウイ研究の世界的権威に監修を受けたベスト・マスターを使用し、さらに細心のマスタリングも実施。元音源では狂っていた左右のステレオ・バランスを整え、やや低かった「Rebel Rebel」のピッチも正確に訂正。万全を尽くした最良盤に仕上げた。その結果、海外マニアからも「フィラデルフィア74はWardour版なら安心」と言われるほどの金字塔となったのです。
そんな最良サウンドで描かれるのは、『DAVID LIVE』から様変わりした“THE SOUL/PHILLY DOGS Tour”ならではのショウ。ここでその内容も整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。現在では公式作『I’M ONLY DANCING (THE SOUL TOUR 74)』もありますが、あれは２公演を合成したライヴアルバム。そのため、曲数的には本作は一歩及ばないわけですが、それより重要なのはショウの体験感。オーディエンス録音だからこそ「その場にいる」リアリティに肌で触れ、１曲１曲を重ねていくショウのムードを感じられる。そして、生まれ変わった演奏も素晴らしい。ファンキーなリズムでグイグイとノセる「John, I’m Only Dancing (Again)」や「1984」、この時期だけのアレンジが冴える「Rock ‘n’ Roll With Me」「Can You Hear Me」「Somebody Up There Likes Me」等も貴重。カバーも自作曲も大胆な換骨奪胎が施され、様変わりした名曲が積み重ねていく現場のムードに全身を浸せるのです。
『DAVID LIVE』から約４ヶ月、フィラデルフィアに戻ってきたボウイを体感できる極上ライヴアルバムです。“THE SOUL/PHILLY DOGS Tour”の代表作というだけでなく、同じフィラデルフィアの『DAVID LIVE』と比較して変化の大きさを実感するのも一興。そんな伝説録音を永久保存した2ndプレスCD。どうぞ、心ゆくまでご堪能ください。

Bowie in late 1974 was rapidly addicted to soul music. The main press CD is a masterpiece of a live album that lets you experience the scene with 100% sound. However, the live album is a live album even if it is a real and good-sounding masterpiece below. There is no persuasive power to “see with the eyes”. Therefore, as a bonus, we have prepared a valuable and superb video collection where you can meet Bowie at the same time.

[1974 legendary TV program “THE DICK CAVETT SHOW”] The main feature of this work is the popular TV program “THE DICK CAVETT SHOW” recorded on “November 2, 1974”. It was broadcast after “THE SOUL / PHILLY DOGS Tour” was over, but at the time of recording, it was in the middle of the tour. You can see Bowie on the other side of the main press CD.
This video has traditionally been known to be difficult to see in black and white, but this work is a full-color version that is also vivid to the eyes. What’s more, its master freshness is outstanding, and there are no dubbing marks or deterioration over time, and it is an ultra-high quality that can be officially released even in the modern age of digital heyday.
The program projected with that quality started with personality Dick Cavetto introducing Bowie’s career. You can also see the performances of the three songs “1984”, “Young Americans”, and “Footstompin'(only this song is less fresh, but it is still full color)” with a dialogue.
It is wonderful to see the precious 1974 Bowie in the highest quality, but it is Bowie himself that is even more shocking. It is also known that he was suffering from serious drug addiction during this period, and even in this work, he is extremely thin. The performance is as hot as usual, and I talk peacefully in the conversation, but the smile with the raised cheekbones is painful …

[Various bonus videos] After such a TV program, in addition to the TV commercial of the album “DIAMOND DOGS”, 9 valuable live videos were recorded. This is a collection of different live performances and materials. There are various qualities and types, from rehearsals taken by people involved, 8mm films covered with audio, audience shots to crisp professional shots. However, all of them are valuable full-color records.
Bowie was mentally cornered by trouble with the staff and backing band while sealing the fictional star “Jiggy”. Having been eroded by a life that relies on a little food and medicine, he meets soul music and begins his new course …. It is a masterpiece image that you can meet Bowie in the mid 70’s who was seriously heading for music while hesitating. A gorgeous set that spells such “1974” with the finest live album and precious images. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.

【1974年の伝説TV番組“THE DICK CAVETT SHOW”】
そんな本作のメインになっているのは「1974年11月２日」に収録された人気テレビ番組“THE DICK CAVETT SHOW”。放送されたのは“THE SOUL/PHILLY DOGS Tour”が終了してからですが、収録時点ではツアーの真っ最中。まさに本編プレスCDの向こう側にいるボウイの姿が観られるのです。
この映像は従来からモノクロの見づらい映像が知られていましたが、本作は目にも鮮やかなフルカラー版。しかも、そのマスター鮮度はバツグンで、ダビング痕も経年劣化もまるで感じられず、デジタル大全盛の現代にあっても確実にオフィシャル・リリース可能な超・極上クオリティなのです。
そのクオリティで映し出される番組は、パーソナリティのディック・カベットがボウイの経歴を紹介するところからスタート。対談を挟みながら３曲「1984」「Young Americans」「Footstompin’（この曲のみ鮮度が落ちますが、それでもフルカラーです）」のパフォーマンスも見られます。
ただでさえ貴重な1974年のボウイが極上クオリティで観られるだけでも素晴らしいのですが、それ以上に衝撃なのはボウイ自身。この時期は深刻なドラッグ依存症に苛まれていた事でも知られ、本作でも極度にやせ細った姿なのです。パフォーマンスはいつもと変わらず熱く、対談でも和やかに話しているのですが、ほお骨の浮き上がった笑顔が痛々しい……。

そんなテレビ番組の後には、アルバム『DIAMOND DOGS』のテレビコマーシャルの他、貴重なライヴ映像を９曲分収録しました。これはそれぞれ違うライヴ、素材を集めたもの。関係者撮影のリハーサルや８ミリ映像に音声を被せたもの、オーディエンス・ショットからバリバリのプロショットまでクオリティも種類もまちまち。しかし、そのどれもがフルカラーの貴重な記録ばかりです。
