今年のZEPレア音源界の話題をかっさらった感のある1971年のオーデンセ公演。長いこと前日のコペンハーゲン一択だった71年5月という時期から遂に発掘された初登場音源は正に聖杯が姿を現したに等しい歴史的瞬間だったのですが、その流通に関しては一筋縄ではいかなかったのです。そもそも春ごろにはネット上で音源所有者と思われる人物による投稿によってトラックリストまで明らかになってはいたものの、そこから音源が公開されることもなく夏を迎えてしまったのでした。
これで音源が秘匿されていることは明白でしたが、公開されない以上はどうしようもなく、我々が聞くことは出来ない。こればかりは指をくわえて待つしかなかった。ところが、いざ公開となれば姿を現したのはYouTube上。超貴重な時期の初登場音源をいきなりYouTubeで広めてくれるとは、何と太っ腹な。当然ながら世界中のZEPマニアが大いに色めきだったのでした。そうした中でリリースされたのが好評発売中である限定プレスCD「ODENSE 1971」であり、遂にコペンハーゲン以外の音源が、なおかつ十分に聞ける音質で姿を現してくれたという事実はあまりにも大きかったのです。
とはいえYouTube上での公開に際して、明らかに圧縮された状態でアップロードされていたのも事実。そう、幻のオーデンセ公演が登場してはくれたものの、これまた一筋縄ではいかなかったという。今やYouTubeでも圧縮を最小限にとどめた形でのアップロードは容易であり、それが映像でなく音源ともなればなおさらでした。ところが音源の持ち主はYouTubeでの公開の際には明らかに圧縮した状態としていたのだから、なかなかの曲者だったと呼べるでしょう。
当然ながら公開された際はそんな状態が気にならないほど、遂にオーデンセが姿を現したというインパクトはあまりにも大きく、世界中のマニアが飛付くに決っていた。
そして音源の所有者はそうした状況をあざ笑うかのごとく、10月に入ってようやくオーデンセのロスレス版、つまりに圧縮プロセスを経由しないバージョンを公開してくれたのでした。つまり最初に劣化したバージョンを公開してもなお手放しで喜ばれるほど貴重な音源だった訳で、一連のオーデンセの流通に関する顛末は完全に音源所有者に踊らされる結果となったと言わざるを得ません。
とはいえ今回のロスレス版は夏のYouTubeと比べても流石にナチュラルさが際立っている。今回のオーディエンス録音は元々の状態からして音がうねるきらいがありました。それはオープニングの「Immigrant Song」からして顕著でしたし、さらには「Dazed And Confused」におけるジミーのボウイング・セクションが終わってバンドの激しい展開が始まる9分台後半から10分台前半などでも顕著でした。それが圧縮されたせいでさらに目立つようになっていたのです。
さらに今回の音源はヒスノイズが持病でもあった訳ですが、それが圧縮されたせいでヒスノイズならではの「サー」という状態がYouTubeバージョンでは「ヒュルヒュル」という質感へと変化してしまっていたのもまた事実。これらに関しても「Dazed And～」、あるいはアコースティック・ナンバーなどにおける静音部で聞き比べるとはっきりとした違いが見られたのでした。
そして何よりも目玉であった「Four Sticks」と「Gallows Pole」の二曲になるとまるで違う。YouTubeバージョンと比べて今回の方が俄然ナチュラルなのです。もしたしたら、これら二曲ではさらに圧縮率を上げていたのでは？（それは実際に可能です）と思えるほどでして、今回のバージョンと既発盤の元になったYouTubeバージョンの違いを確認したければ、これら二曲を聞くのが一番わかりやすい。
もっとも今回の公開によって元の録音はトラブルから片チャンネルのみの収録になってしまったという事実が明るみになり、どのみちオーバーホール必要な録音であったことも判明しています。その作業を担当したのは、かのdadgad。しかし片チャンからのモノ化とピッチ調整を施した以外は余計な手を加えていないとのことで、確かにYouTubeバージョンと違って今回はピッチも正確。結果的には世界中のマニアを翻弄させる展開となってしまったオーデンセ公演ですが、遂にマスターカセットからの決定版が登場。改めてこの衝撃の発掘を本来のナチュラルさと共に心ゆくまで味わってください。
