“Nimbus” is a legend that has the highest sound quality of The Beatles and Floyd. The phantom early CD “Double Fantasy” left by the late prestigious is now decided to be a gift release.

The true identity of this work is “299 131” released on the Geffen label in 1986. It was converted to D for the first time in the world, and it is still called “the best-sounding CD version of Double Fantasy”. I’m sure some of you may be asking, “What? Is Capitol / Toshiba EMI the first CD?” “What happened to Nimbus?”, So let’s start with the explanation.
Certainly the Japanese CD was released from “Capitol / Toshiba EMI”, but it was in 1988. Prior to that, Geffen had the rights to “Double Fantasy” and the first CD was released in 1986. In other words, the Geffen label was released for about a year or two. And it was Nimbus, England that was pressing a part of the Geffen record. The point here is “part”. In fact, the 1986 Geffen record was distributed and pressed in each country. This is not a “difference in release country”. At that time, even though the Japanese version was not released, there was also a Japanese factory press. In other words, even if you buy it from an imported disc, you don’t know whether it was the US factory, the German factory, or the Japanese factory that pressed the disc. Probably because there were few press factories in the world in the 1980s, it was like a lottery ticket or a trading card. One of those press differences was “Nimbus Press”. Speaking of “Nimbus”, it is legendary in Super Cut LP, but since 1984, he has also worked on CD press for a short time. This work is a finely reproduced piece from the highest quality board.

Such a Nimbus board is also called “the best sounding double fantasy CD”. In the first place, the 1986 Geffen CD itself is extremely highly evaluated. As a matter of fact, in 1994, a remastered version was released from the high-quality CD label Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL), but the sound is better than that. “Nimbus Press (= this work)” is the best of the early Geffen records.
Actually, the sound is like another world. The first thing that surprises me is the sound pressure. It’s the 80’s, so it’s not bulky with a compressor, but it’s powerful and the outline is clear. Compared to the 90’s MFSL board, the vividness and three-dimensional effect are completely different. Of course, no matter how high the sound pressure is, it is not as good as the current remastered CD, but it is natural and a beauty. The story is not limited to “Double Fantasy”, but the sound pressure of modern CDs is digitally raised, and not only is the feeling of processing undeniable, but the fine parts of the playing sound are crushed. However, the sound pressure of this work is derived from the master freshness, so the details are clearer than any other CD, let alone crushed.
And the delicate reproducibility is the greatest umami. For example, “(Just Like) Starting Over”. The intro metal sound is vivid up to the vibe, and the extension is beautiful to the end. The next hitting sound is connected before one sound disappears, but you can feel the extension of the previous sound that disappears behind the powerful peak. And guitar cutting. The layered feeling that deepens as the sound overlaps with the vocals, chorus, and rhythm section is wonderful, and among them, the feeling of separation that is never buried is enormous. In other words, even one cutting shot is three-dimensional. Rather than feeling it as a single chord, the vibrating vibe separates the presence of each string. You will even be struck by the illusion that your consciousness is buried in a world where the guitar strings are clashing, as if it were a “micro death zone.”
Of course, this is just an example. The crisp and vivid outline is wonderful as a whole, and the lack of bass is incomparable. The separate feeling of the drum kit is also the vibration class of the skin, and the feeling of “holding” is indescribable. It is a super 3D sound that blows away the prejudice that “the initial CD is a sober sound”.

The Geffen record “Double Fantasy” was released for just over a year when CD decks were not yet widespread. Among such extremely rare editions, “Nimbus Press” was a lottery edition that I didn’t know until I bought it. A delicate reproduction of the hidden treasure board that had been digitalizing the highest peak sound. Please take this opportunity to experience it.

●わずか１年あまりで消えた初CD化のGeffen盤
そんな本作の正体は、1986年にGeffenレーベルからリリースされた『299 131』。全世界で初めてD化され、今なお「最も音の良いCD版ダブル・ファンタジー」と呼ばれる銘品です。「あれ？　初CD化はCapitol/東芝EMIじゃ？」「ニンバスはどうした？」という方もいらっしゃるかと思いますので、イチからご説明していきましょう。
確かに日本盤CDは「Capitol/東芝EMI」からリリースされましたが、それは1988年。それ以前に『ダブル・ファンタジー』の権利を持っていたのはGeffenで、最初のCDがリリースされたのは1986年でした。つまり、約１ー２年間だけGeffenレーベル盤がリリースされていました。そして、そのGeffen盤の一部をプレスしていたのが英国ニンバスだったのです。ここでポイントなのが「一部」というところ。実は、1986年のGeffen盤は各国で分散プレスされていたのです。これは「リリース国の違い」ではありません。当時は日本盤は出ていなかったにも関わらず、日本工場プレスも存在していた。つまり、輸入盤で買ったとしてもディスクをプレスしたのが米国工場なのか、独工場なのか、あるいは日本工場なのか分からない。恐らく、80年代当時は世界的にもプレス工場が少なかったのが原因だと思われますが、まるで宝くじかトレーディング・カードのような状態。そんなプレス違いの１つが「ニンバス・プレス」でした。「ニンバス」と言えば、スーパーカットLPで伝説的ですが、1984年から短い間だけCDプレスも手掛けていた。本作は、その極上クオリティ盤から精緻に復刻した１枚なのです。

●MFSLリマスター盤さえ凌駕する至高の「ニンバス・プレス」
そんなニンバス盤は「最高サウンドのダブル・ファンタジーCD」とも言われています。そもそも、1986年のGeffen盤CD自体が極めて評価が高い。実のところ、1994年には高音質CDレーベルMobile Fidelity Sound Lab（MFSL）からもリマスター盤が出ているのですが、それよりも音が良い。「ニンバス・プレス（＝本作）」は、その初期Geffen盤の中でもベストなのです。
実際、そのサウンドはまるで別世界。まず何より驚くのは音圧。80年代ですからコンプレッサーでかさ増しはしていないハズなのですが、力強く輪郭もクッキリ。90年代のMFSL盤と比べても鮮やかさも立体感もまるで違います。もちろん、いかに音圧が高いとは言っても現行リマスターCDほどではないわけですが、それは当然であり、美点でもある。『ダブル・ファンタジー』に限らない話ですが、現代CDの音圧はデジタル的に引き上げられたものであり、加工感が否めないだけでなく、演奏音の微細部が潰れてしまう。ところが、本作の音圧はマスター鮮度が由来であるため、ディテールは潰れるどころか他のあらゆるCDよりも鮮明なのです。
そして、その細やかな再現度こそが最大の旨味。例えば、「(Just Like) Starting Over」。イントロ金属音はヴァイヴまで鮮やかで、伸びも端の端まで美しい。１音が消える前に次の打音が繋ぐわけですが、その力強いピークの裏で消えかける前音の伸びまでしっかりと感じられるのです。そして、ギター・カッティング。ヴォーカルやコーラス、そしてリズム隊と音が重なっていく毎に深まっていく重層感が素晴らしく、その中でも決して埋もれないセパレート感が絶大なのです。もっと言えば、カッティング１発だけでも立体的。１つのコードとして感じるのではなく、弦１本１本の存在も、振動のヴァイヴが見事にセパレート。まるで『ミクロの決死圏』のように、自分の意識がギター弦がせめぎ合う世界に埋没していくような錯覚にさえ襲われるのです。
もちろん、これはあくまで一例。全体的にもシャキッと鮮やかな輪郭が素晴らしく、低音のヌケも比較にならない。ドラム・キットのセパレート感も皮の振動級ですし、「抱いて」のグルグル感も筆舌に尽くしがたいものがある。「初期CDは地味な音」という先入観を吹っ飛ばしてしまうスーパー３次元サウンドなのです。

まだCDデッキの普及もままならなかった時代、わずか１年あまりだけリリースされていたGeffen盤『ダブル・ファンタジー』。そんな激レア盤の中でも「ニンバス・プレス」は買ってみるまで当たるか分からなかった宝くじ盤でした。最高峰サウンドを人知れずデジタル化していた秘宝盤を精緻に復刻した１枚。どうぞ、この機会にご体験ください。
