The 1996 Paige Plant’s performance in Japan showed such excitement not only because the former Led Zeppelin members came to Japan … but also because the change in the set list every night was too great. 1996年ペイジ・プラントの来日公演があれほどの盛り上がりを見せたのは、単に元レッド・ツェッペリンのメンバーが来日したから…というだけでなく、毎晩のセットリストの変動があまりに大きかったからという事実を忘れてはなりません。前年にアメリカやヨーロッパを精力的に回ったことが功を奏し、日本の地を踏んだバンドは文字通り変幻自在な状態にあった。それは武道館最初の三日間だけでも驚くほどの変化に富んでおり、それこそ全公演参戦のマニアなどは文字通り至福の時を味わったのでした。
何しろ毎回のセットリストの振れ幅は凄まじいものがあり、本当に予測不可能というもの。その極めつけと言えたオープニングが武道館四日目ではなかったでしょうか。静かな曲では演奏を聞き入る日本の雰囲気に気を良くしてライブツアー初披露となった前日の「The Rain Song」をこの日は何とライブのオープニングに持ってくるという攻めの姿勢。そこから日本初披露の「No Quarter」、そして「Babe I’m Gonna Leave You」というスローナンバーをライブ序盤で立て続けに披露することなど、絶対に日本でしかありえない。
そんなスペシャル・オープニングがひと段落すると定型の初期クラシック・メドレーへと移るメリハリのある展開も映える。ここまでの四日間だけでもセットリストの構成がまるで違っており、文字通り「何が出てくるか分からない」というドキドキや興奮を武道館に詰めかけた観客に与えてくれた。それこそ今で言うところの「ワクワクが止まらない」という表現がピッタリと当てはまるかと。
そんなサプライズの四日目もリアタイ・リリースで群を抜いていたのはもちろん『10 DAYS』ボックス。何よりライブ序盤の繊細さを称えたオープニングの再現力だけでも他のアイテム群とは一線を画す高音質で圧倒していました。それだけに5年以上前に独自入手マスターからのリリースとして世界中のマニアに『BUDOKAN 1996 4TH NIGHT』のリリースは衝撃を与えましたが、あの見事な録音ですら『10 DAYS』のマスターは凌駕してしまった。
この日の独特すぎるオープニングの『10 DAYS』ならではの再現力は2023年の最新技術を活かしたトランスファーでさらに細やかに。今回の一連のマスターからのリリースではアコースティックな演奏で効果が現れていますので、なおさらこの日のライブ序盤は威力が発揮される結果となっています。もっともライブの最初に演奏したこともあり、前日の「The Rain Song」と比べてプラントの声がかすれ気味なのはご愛敬。
同じくご愛敬なやり直しハプニング込みで前日が初披露となった「Tea For One」はグッと落ち着きを払った演奏となり、ここから日本公演を代表するレパートリーとなるのでした。
そしてサプライズに満ち溢れたこの日は「Whole Lotta Love」がいつもより早い位置で披露された挙句、中間では何とブルース・クラシック「Spoonful」をプラントが歌い出すという驚きの展開。これまでも初日の「White Rabbit」（ジェファーソン・エアプレイン）、前日の「Down By The Seaside」といった予想外の曲をプラントが歌い出したことが連日の楽しみとなっていましたが、この日がまたロック・マニア感涙ものの選曲であったことも今となっては懐かしい。
そう、今となってはあの盛り上がり自体が何とも懐かしい訳ですが、その中で生み出された金字塔とも言うべき名盤中の名盤『10 DAYS』が捉えてくれた比類なきクオリティによる武道館四日目のドキュメント。ライブ終盤「Black Dog」でもエンディングでプラントが「In My Time Of Dying」の一節を歌っており、これもまた実にこの日らしい場面であったかと。
こうして今なお色褪せない衝撃のクオリティはマニアだけでなく初心者にも安心して楽しんでもらえること請け合い。そして当時のリリースよりもさらに細やかな再現度で伝説のオープニングを始めとしたセットリスト大変更の一日が2023年にオリジナルのDATマスターを使用して蘇ります！
