In 1968, the Jeff Beck Group performed a vigorous American tour in the second half of the year in order to solidify its popularity along with the release of the first album “TRUTH”. As a result, surprisingly many high-quality audience recordings have been left for the era of 1968, and among them, the sound source with the highest quality is called “DOIN’ THAT CRAZY THING” more than 10 years ago. Masterpiece released. In addition, it was an item that became difficult to obtain for a long time. “DALLAS 1968” is still on sale as an upper version reborn by the mastering of “GRAF ZEPPELIN” who was also involved in the production of this masterpiece.
“ROCK MY PLIMSOUL” has been regarded as a masterpiece more than ten years ago, as a masterpiece that rivals Dallas. It was a famous recording that captured Detroit in November with a wonderful vintage audience, but it has been more difficult to obtain than “DOIN ‘THAT ~” for a long time, and the cover design seems to be the first Jeff Beck Group. Together, it was a masterpiece that was highly appreciated by maniacs. With the advent of “DALLAS 1968”, would it be possible for us to brush it up again? What should I do because I will not re-release this name sound source? The flow has changed to the timing.
In terms of sound quality, although it does not reach the spread and on sound image of Dallas, which was the only stereo recording audience of JBG#1’s 68 years audience, Detroit, which is a vintage audience unique to monaural, is also really easy to hear. That’s why I’d like to start a re-release with “GRAF ZEPPELIN” mastering, but the original sound source that was in circulation at the time of the release of “ROCK MY PLIMSOUL” had a slight reverb effect added at the stage of distribution. . It is clear that this was a process that was applied to try to spread the sound to a monaural vintage audience.
Fortunately, a flat version without such tricks is currently in circulation. Therefore, this release is not a “remaster” from the same sound source as the previous one, but a complete “upper version” that will be released after reviewing the sound source from scratch. In addition, the copy used for “ROCK MY PLIMSOUL” had some weak crackling noises, but this version has no such noise.
As mentioned earlier, the sound image is not as close as Dallas, but instead it has a very good view and is clear, yet the solid texture unique to monaural has been greatly improved with this release. It has evolved into an upper version that more realistically conveys the intense performance of the band at this time.
And after all, the autumn US tour was a time when a big change occurred with the addition of Nicky Hopkins. On this day as well, the tremendous presence of his piano is transmitted from the opening “Shapes Of Things”. The splendor of this sound source is that it captures the heavy keyboard handling. In addition, the group itself has evolved the set list from Dallas in July, and Beck borrowed the power of him and Rod Stewart, such as playing the R & B cover “Natural Woman” that made use of Nicky’s piano as an instrumental. The “new music that fuses rock and R&B” that he was trying to create has a sophisticated sound all at once.
Conversely, JBG’s style of hard rock sound was established in his next album “BECK-OLA”, and there is no doubt that Nicky’s piano played an important role in that transition period. . Above all, Beck himself has evolved greatly from the Dallas play in July, which left a psychedelic color inspired by his piano play. I think that this sound source fully captures the stage unique to the 68-year JBG that is involved.
The long-awaited reissue of JBG’s masterpiece vintage audience of 1968 has finally appeared as the definitive edition reborn by “GRAF ZEPPELIN” mastering. Exactly, please enjoy the heavy rock sound that could only be achieved by them at this time with the monaural boned sound, and enjoy the loud sound from the speakers!
