そもそも90年代のジャクソンはバンドを従えたツアーの合間で弾き語りの単発ステージや小メンバーのアコースティック・ツアーを行う傾向があり、それはまるで自身のアコースティックなサウンドのルーツを忘れるまいとしているかのようですらありました。その最たる例が先週リリースされたリンドレーとのデュオ・ツアーを完璧なサウンドボード録音にて収録した『BERGEN 1997 SOUNDBOARD』と『RESCIA 1997 SOUNDBOARD』という衝撃の発掘だった訳でしたが、今回もまた世界中のマニアを驚かせるに相応しい素晴らしい音源なのです。
それにしてもジャクソン・ブラウンのPAアウトからのサウンドボードはどれも本当に音質がイイ。この手の音源はとかく演奏をダイレクトに捉えすぎるきらいがあり、ライブのダイナミズムを伝えきれないというジレンマに陥りがち。それが90年代のDATサウンドボードになるとさらに顕著なのですが、これまで登場してきたジャクソンのサウンドボードがそうであったように、今回もまたオフィシャル・クラスの鮮明な音質だけでなく、アコースティック・トリオならではの親密な演奏ぶりまで感じさせてくれるからエライ。
おかげでこの時代のジャクソンのバンドサウンドとは違うシンプルだが、かといって頼りない音でもないトリオならではの魅力が全開。そもそも90年のトリオ・ツアーは97年のリンドレーとのデュオの時と同じようにマニアの間で伝説化されていたツアーでして、音源の存在自体が希少だった。それどころかオーディエンス録音のアイテムすらリリースされた事がないときた。
そんな伝説のアコースティック・トリオ・ツアーから衝撃のサウンドボードというだけでも世界中のマニアに衝撃を与えるには十分だというのに、この幻のツアーが完璧なステレオ音質で聞かれるとは。
前年までのジャクソンがシンセサイザーも取り込んだバンドツアーだったのに対し、ここではトリオのシンプルな構成かつアコースティックなアレンジで演奏されたことから、シンセや打ち込み導入といったサウンドのせいで迷走期とまで形容されがちだった『WORLD IN MOTION』収録曲も初めて曲の良さが浮き彫りになったという点が大変に意義のあるツアーでした。
その最たる例が「Anything Can Happen」で、実はジャクソンらしい快活な雰囲気を持つ曲であったことを思い知らされますし、何しろ音が良いからいよいよ魅力がはっきり伝わってくる。今でこそ、これらの楽曲も正当な評価を受けていますが、当時はライブでの反応も芳しくなかったという現実があった。だからこそシンプルでアコースティックな演奏の魅力が際立つのです。
