GUNS N’ ROSES in 1989 shook the whole world with their shocking debut and attracted attention for their “next move”. A valuable live album that conveys the transition period of the times is a new excavation.
Two performances are imbued in this work. It is the first appearance audience recording of “October 18 + 19, 1989 Los Angeles performance”. The “APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION Tour” that rewrote the world and history ended in December 1988, and the next world tour “USE YOUR ILLUSION Tour” started in January 1991. In 1989/1990, which is between the two, there were no major movements, but live performances were also held, although very little. First, let’s take a look back at some of the less neglected special times in the schedule.

This is the 1989/1990 GUNS N’ ROSES. There were other personal stages for Axel and Slash, but that’s it for the group. Hong’s event appearances and small single-shot live performances, but the biggest stage among them was the 4 performances at “LA Memorial Coliseum”. This is part of Rolling Stones’ “STEEL WHEELS/URBAN JUNGLE Tour”. It was a nationwide tour with LIVING COLOUR as the opening act, but GUNS N ‘ROSES also joined there for only 4 performances. This work is a two-disc set in which the first two performances of the four performances are arranged on one disc.
This recording is the first sound source that is currently attracting attention. It was published on a famous Stones site, and it is a recording that has not been known until now. Moreover, the quality is also wonderful. I’m not the type to say something like a vintage audience compared to a sound board, but the powerful core and fresh sound are excellent, after all, it seems to have been digitized directly from the cassette master, and the dubbing marks have aged. I don’t see any deterioration.
What’s more, it’s amazing that such a sound runs through the two performances. Of course, the subtle personality is different only for different positions in different performances, and if anything, it feels like “first day (DISC 1) = clear” and “second day (DISC 2) = dynamic”. However, both of them have a common vividness that penetrates centering on vocals, and it is a well-known recording with plenty of listening that you can hear every word of the lyrics.
With such a sound, you can’t miss the two performances, including the historic MC. First of all, let’s organize the set that left the afterglow of “APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION Tour”.

… and it looks like this. “Suicide Horns Section” centered on Duff’s younger brother Matt appears in “Move To The City”, with no bad show that the five originals will play the famous songs of “APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION”. playing the horn.
And the MC in between is also legendary. The first day (DISC 1) started well with “It’s So Easy”, but before the second song “Mr. Brownstone”, Axel made a bombshell statement. He declares, “Tonight is the last show of GUNS N’ROSES!” It seems that the audience is not particularly upset, whether they thought it was a joke or intended, but what are they saying on the first day of the 4 undercard performances of Stones …? This is a famous MC, but there was actually a sequel. The opening on the second day (DISC 2) was replaced with “Mr. It’s obvious that it was “a thing that didn’t happen” at the time of the performance, but even so, how many people know the previous day’s MC at this venue? I also get the feeling that the audience’s reaction is like, “What are you talking about?”
Along with such an MC, what is interesting is “Out Ta Get Me” on the first day (DISC 1), where Axel falls off the stage. There is also a continuation of this, and on the second day (DISC 2) “Rocket Queen” is a solid story.
After 4 performances of “LA Memorial Coliseum”, Steven Adler left with the appearance of FARM AID. The original line-up was destroyed. After that, the legend of the monster band will continue, but it is also true that this 1989 was a big turning point. A new excavation live album that allows you to experience the scene of such a change with real sound for two performances. Please enjoy it to the fullest.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは２公演。「1989年10月18日＋19日ロサンゼルス公演」の初登場オーディエンス録音です。世界と歴史を塗り替えた“APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION Tour”は1988年12月に終了しており、次なるワールド・ツアー“USE YOUR ILLUSION Tour”が始まったのは1991年１月。両者の合間となる1989年／1990年は大きな動きがない一方、ごく僅かながらライヴも実施されていました。まずは、あまり顧みられない特別な時期をスケジュールで振り返ってみましょう。

これが1989年／1990年のGUNS N’ ROSES。この他にもアクセルやスラッシュの個人的なステージはありましたが、グループとしては以上です。ホンの数曲のイベント出演や小さな単発ライヴばかりですが、その中で最も大きなステージだったのが“LAメモリアル・コロシアム”での４公演でした。これはローリング・ストーンズの“STEEL WHEELS/URBAN JUNGLE Tour”の一部。LIVING COLOURを前座に据えての全米ツアーだったのですが、４公演だけそこにGUNS N’ ROSESも加わったのです。本作は、その４公演の前半２公演をディスク１枚ずつに配した２枚組なのです。
この録音は、今まさに話題を集めている初登場音源。ストーンズ系の有名サイトで公開されたもので、これまで知られてこなかった録音なのです。しかも、クオリティも素晴らしい。あくまでヴィンテージ・オーディエンスでサウンドボードと比べてどうこう語る様なタイプではないのですが、力強い芯と瑞々しい鳴りが絶品、何しろ、カセット・マスターからダイレクトにデジタル化されているらしく、ダビング痕も経年劣化も見られないのです。
しかも、そんなサウンドが２公演貫かれているからスゴい。もちろん、別公演の別ポジションだけに微妙な個性は異なっており、どちらかと言うと「初日（DISC 1）＝クリア」「２日目（DISC 2）＝ダイナミック」という感じ。ただし、どちらもヴォーカルを中心に突き抜けるような鮮やかさが共通しており、歌詞の一語一語まで聴き取れそうな聴き応えたっぷりの名録音なのです。
そんなサウンドで描かれるのは、歴史的なMCまで聴き逃せない２公演。まずは“APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION Tour”の残照を色濃く残したセットを整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。『APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION』の名曲群をオリジナル５人がブチかますショウが悪かろうハズがなく、「Move To The City」ではダフの弟マットを中心とした“Suicide Horns Section”が登場。ホーンを演奏しています。
そして、その合間のMCも伝説。初日（DISC 1）は「It’s So Easy」で快調に始まるのですが、２曲目「Mr. Brownstone」の前にアクセルが爆弾発言。「今夜がGUNS N’ ROSESの最後のショウだ！」と宣言するのです。ジョークと思ったのか意図を図りかねたのか、観客は特に動揺していないようですが、ストーンズの前座４公演の初日に何を言っているのか……。これは有名なMCだったりするのですが、実はその続きもありました。翌２日目（DISC 2）のオープニングは「Mr. Brownstone」に入れ替わったのですが、その後に「昨日言ったことは謝るよ」とあっさり翻すのです。開演している時点で「なかった事」になっているのは分かりきっていますが、それにしてもこの会場に前日のMCを知っている人がどれだけいるのか。観客の反応もやっぱり「何を言ってるんだろう」のような気もします。
そんなMCと並んで面白いのが初日（DISC 1）の「Out Ta Get Me」で、何とアクセルがステージから落下してしまう。これまた続きがありまして、２日目（DISC 2）の「Rocket Queen」ではしっかり自らネタにしています。
“LAメモリアル・コロシアム”４公演のあと、FARM AIDの出演をもってスティーヴン・アドラーが離脱。オリジナル・ラインナップ崩壊しました。その後も怪物バンドの伝説は続いていくわけですが、この1989年が大きなターニング・ポイントだったのも事実です。そんな転換の現場を２公演丸ごとリアル・サウンドで体験できる新発掘ライヴアルバム。どうぞ、存分に味わい尽くしてください。
