エリック・クラプトンの秘蔵音源でお馴染みの、イギリス在住の重鎮テーパーからのDATマスターリリースの第二弾は、2009年のロイヤル・アルバート・ホール連続公演から、4公演目に当たった5月20日を極上のステレオ・オーディエンス録音で完全収録した2CDです。当店は先般、同重鎮テーパーのマスターから、この連続公演5日目の「Royal Albert Hall 2009 5th Night DAT Master(2CD)」と9日目の「Royal Albert Hall 2009 9th Night DAT Master」をリリースしており、いずれも大好評をいただいておりますが、それに優るとも劣らないハイクオリティと言えばご納得いただけるのではないかと思います。重鎮テーパーは、連日完璧な「仕事」をしていたわけです。手馴れたテーパーの録音ゆえに、トラブル箇所は一切ありません。その上でサウンドは、ちょっと聴けばサウンドボード録音のような楽音、ボーカルの近さとサウンドバランスの良さを誇るものです。この連続公演からは既発盤として全公演収録のボックスセットもリリースされていますが、どれか1公演を極め付けの音質で聴いてみたいと思っておられた方には本作も最適のタイトルとなるでしょう。2009年はジャパン・ツアーも行なわれましたが、その際ドラムを務めたエイブ・ラボリアル・ジュニアに代わり、この公演ではスティーヴ・ガッドがドラムだったという変化がありました。また、セカンドギタリストも、ドイル・ブラムホールⅡからアンディ・フェアウェザー・ロウに代わりました。そのため日本公演時とはセットリストも変わっており、この年中盤のクラプトンのライブとしてははずせない内容だと言えます。

チャリティイベントやテレビ番組にも出演し、世界各地でツアーも行なった非常に精力的な活動の一年だったことがお分かりいただけるでしょう。ここには日本でのジェフ・ベックとのジョイント・コンサートも含まれていました。そして本作の日は、地元ロイヤル・アルバート・ホールでの11連続公演の4夜目に当たっていました。言わば、連続公演も佳境に入り、慣れた地元で伸び伸びとプレイできたタイミングだったと言えます。ジャパン・ツアーの音源を気に入っておられる方にも是非注目いただきたいのが、前述のようにドラマーがエイブ・ラボリアル・ジュニアからスティーヴ・ガッドに替わっていたことです。クラプトンの楽曲と言えば、もはやガッドほど「はまる」人選はないと言ってもいいほどです。その絶対的な安心感から、クラプトンはジャパン・ツアー時とは劇的にセットリストを変更してきたのです。オープニングナンバーからして違います。01年の「レプタイル・ツアー」以来8年ぶりの演奏となるGoing Down Slowというサプライズ。この曲もOld Loveも、共に98年の「ピルグリム・ツアー」の時のアレンジでプレイされています。このあたりは、98年当時にもキーボードを務めたティム・カーモンがバンドにいたことが主因と考えられ、Old Loveでのカーモンのシンセソロも素晴らしいものですが、彼のシンセサイザーのプレイアビリティを活かしての、92年以来17年ぶりとなったAnything For Your Loveの重厚なパフォーマンスも聴きものです。クラプトンはこの日も絶好調です。 I Shot the Sheriffの後奏はこの日もキレまくっていて、本来ならクラプトンを乗せる側のドラムのガッドが、クラプトンのあまりの凄まじいプレイに煽られて怒涛のドラミングを披露するという逆現象も起きています。このテイクも是非聴いていただきたいものです。この曲の後、シッティングセットに移ったわけですが、そこでシルヴィアさんという女性への誕生日祝いの歌が贈られます。このシルヴィアさんとは、「REPTILE」制作のインスピレーションをクラプトンに与えた、亡くなった実の伯父さんの奥さんで、クラプトンにとっては義理の伯母さんに当たる人物です。「REPTILE」のラストには、伯父さん夫婦に捧げたSon& Sylviaというナンバーが入っていました。伯父さんとともに、幼き日のクラプトンに優しく接してくれた伯母さんへの愛情が溢れた、クラプトンの優しい一面が窺える瞬間です。この後に演奏されるLaylaでは、中間のソロはティム・カーモンのオルガン～アンディ・フェアウェザー・ロウのギター～クリス・スティントンのエレピと回され、最後はクラプトンが締めるのですが、このクラプトンのソロの滑らかさといったら、もうこちらが息を呑むレベルです。こんなに素晴らしいソロはそうそうないです。そして注目は、クラプトンの初カバーとなったディランナンバーNot Dark Yetをセットインさせたことでしょう。なぜこの曲を取り上げたのか、理由は不明ですが、ディランを信奉するクラプトンの何らかの意図があったことは確かでしょう。当時のオーディエンスレポートでは、ディランのオリジナルバージョンよりも良かった、というコメントもありました。中間には、曲に寄り添うような、クラプトンの味わい深いソロがプレイされています。さらに続いてAnytime For You。クラプトンの敬愛するビッグ・メイシオのブルースナンバーです。これもライブでは初カバーです。演奏が始まった途端、会場がアメリカの鄙びた酒場のステージに変わったかのようなムードになります。その活躍の主人公はピアノのクリス・スティントンです。このムードが実現できるクラプトンバンド、凄いと思います。この流れの展開は、当店の既発タイトル「Royal Albert Hall 2009 9th Night DAT Master」とはまったく違っています。アコースティックセットの締めに、03年以来となるSomewhere Over The Rainbowを持ってきたことも新鮮です。まさかこの位置で演奏されるとは・・・。そして、何が飛び出すか、ワクワクする前半に対し、後半は王道的なセットリストでじっくり聴かせる構成になっていましたが、その中ではバディ・ガイで有名なノリノリのブルースEverything’s Gonna Be Alrightをプレイしたこともレアで貴重な日です。また、Cocaineでセカンドソロをとるアンディのプレイは、まさに彼にしかできないような非常にユニークなもので、途中からクラプトンのお株を奪うようにワウペダルまで踏んでしまうという展開が楽しめます。ジャパン・ツアーの後に行なわれたという珍しい日程だったロイヤル・アルバート・ホール公演でしたが、ドラマーとギタリストがチェンジし、セットリストも大幅に変わっただけに、日本公演とはまた違った魅力に溢れているパフォーマンスが極上音質で完全収録されています。エレクトリックセットでも、シッティングセットでも聴きどころが満載で、中弛みは一切ありません。精力的に活動していた2009年のクラプトンの代表的音源として是非本作もコレクションに加えていただければと思います。
