Eric Clapton’s latest American tour in September. Recently, when we released the high-quality stereo audience sound source of the Columbus performance on the first day on September 8th as “COLUMBUS 2022 GOD SAVE THE QUEEN”, it was very popular! After all, I realized that rock fans are worried about the trend of Clapton, who is returning to tour well even at the age of 77. And this week, we will release the 2-day performance at Madison Square Garden in New York on September 18th and 19th, which was the final stage of this tour, with high-quality stereo audience recording again!
The master of this time is an original master provided by a Japanese recording person who went to see it directly to the site and made a successful recording and returned to Japan. In other words, it will be our exclusive release. The sound quality is a very clear and well-balanced stereo audience recording that is very easy to listen to. In the release review of “COLUMBUS 2022 GOD SAVE THE QUEEN”, “From the beginning to the encore, it can be said that the first day performance was full of surprises and worth listening to. How will the set list change in the future tour with 6 more performances? Will it continue to change, or will it remain the same?” Undoubtedly, Clapton was in good spirits and completed the tour. As for the band members, backing chorus Katie Kissoon returned from the middle, and now the members are all in place. [Set list with surprises! ]Clapton provided a surprise from the first day performance, but the first surprise was that even in the final stage of the tour, he played God Save The Queen, a memorial to Queen Elizabeth of England, at the beginning. Moreover, in contrast to the first day performance, which was a solo performance with an electric guitar only by Clapton, here it is a full band performance for both days. It means that it was completely established as one song. Since the 9th of the first day was the day when the Queen passed away, I thought that Clapton, who heard the obituary, suddenly performed this performance with his feelings for the Queen, but it continued throughout the tour, I heard that it was developed into a band performance. He must have had a strong crush on the Queen. And the actual opening was Tearing Us Apart. This is also continuing the surprise on the first day, but considering that the set list itself is almost the same as the first day performance, Clapton includes a surprise and a set that he can play with confidence from before the tour Thinking about it, it seems to me that I was deciding on my own. Considering Clapton’s age and physical condition, it was unavoidable that it was a short tour with all 7 performances, but completing all performances with this set list still makes Clapton’s strong will. did. There is a nostalgic River of Tears (1988 work), and After Midnight, which is the first arrangement in an electric sitting set, it can be seen that consideration was given not to fall into a rut. Furthermore, it is worth noting that the opening of the middle sitting set, the blues playing, was changed to “daily”.
On the first day of this work, Muddy Waters’ Honey Bee, on the second day’s final performance, Muddy Waters’ Country Boy (also known as I’m A Country Boy, not Albert Lee’s song of the same name) I am playing a rare number. Both songs were played for the first time in the form of a sitting set, and the latter is probably the first repertoire in Clapton’s career. Both songs feature Doyle Bramhall’s deep blues harp and Paul Carrack’s Hammond solo. Clapton changed to a hollow body vintage guitar called Gibson L-5 in order to create an atmosphere for this number and After Midnight. Because of this high sound quality, you can enjoy this tone that is different from Strat.
Also, Tears In Heaven played in this sitting set continued to surprise! What an intermediate organ solo, Paul Carrack is playing Procol Harum’s “Blue Shadow” on the organ. It is believed that Clapton directed this as a memorial to Gary Brooker, a former band member and close friend who died in February this year. The lyrics of this song fit perfectly with the tribute. A long blues corner that has been playing Little Quuen Of Spades for many years since 2006, I brought The Sky Is Crying for the first time in 38 years since the European tour in 1984. However, Clapton is a solo play with a single note, not a slide play as in the original version. You may think, “What, the performance is the same as usual, and the lyrics are just changed to The Sky Is Crying,” but when you look at the set list like this, he notices one thing. Clapton thinks that he created this setlist to look back on his career, which is still healthy and active, and to remember his late admirers and friends who made it possible. That’s it. Now more than ever, I feel that Clapton stands on stage with a sense of humility that he is who he is today thanks to the many great deceased. Even if he becomes a legend class artist like him, he does not forget his gratitude, which may be the greatness of Clapton.
And High Time We Went came back for encore. Since Jimmy Vaughan, who is the opening act on the first day performance, participated in the encore as a special guest, I chose Before You Accuse Me, which can be jammed with Vaughan, instead of this number featuring Paul Carrack, but at the end In that case, it may have been Clapton’s concern that he wanted to give Carrack a flower. Of course, Vaughan participated in the encore on both days and is featured solo, so you can enjoy a peaceful solo competition with Clapton. 今回のマスターは、直々に現地まで観に行き、録音を成功させて帰国された日本人録音者から提供されたオリジナルマスターです。つまり当店の独占リリースとなります。音質は、非常にクリアでサウンドバランスの良いステレオ・オーディエンス録音で、とても聴きやすいです。「COLUMBUS 2022 GOD SAVE THE QUEEN」のリリースレビューにおいて、「冒頭からアンコールまで、サプライズに満ちた聴きごたえのある初日公演だったと言えます。果たしてあと6公演を残す今後のツアー行程でセットリストはどう変化していくでしょうか。あるいは変わらないのでしょうか。」と綴り、締めましたが、その答えが本作にあります。間違いなく、クラプトンは元気でツアーを完遂しました。バンドメンバーは、バックコーラスのケイティ・キスーンが途中から復帰し、これでメンバー勢揃いとなりました。演奏内容については次項に記しますが、最終行程でもサプライズを含み、とても充実した内容になっています。是非聴いてみてください。
【サプライズを貫いたセットリスト！】
初日公演からサプライズを提供したクラプトンですが、驚きはまず、ツアーの最終行程にあっても、冒頭で英国エリザベス女王への追悼であるGod Save The Queen を演奏していたことです。しかもクラプトンのみによるエレクトリックギターでの独演だった初日公演に対し、ここでは2日間ともフルバンドでの演奏となっています。1曲として完全に成立させたということです。初日の9日は女王が逝去された当日でしたので、その訃報を聞いたクラプトンが女王への想いを込めて急遽このパフォーマンスを行なったと思ったわけですが、それをツアーを通じてずっと続けた上に、バンド演奏に発展させていたとは・・・・。やはり女王への想いは強かったのでしょうね。そして実質のオープニングは、Tearing Us Apartでした。これもまた初日のサプライズを継続しているわけですが、セットリスト自体は初日公演とほぼ変わっていないことを考えると、クラプトンはサプライズを含み、自分が自信を持って演奏できるセットをツアー前から考えて、自分で決めていたように思えます。ここで本ツアーの日程を記しておきますと、

クラプトンの年齢と体調を考慮して全7公演と短めのツアーだったことは止むを得ないところですが、全公演をこのセットリストで完遂したことは、やはりクラプトンの強い意志を感じさせるものでした。そこには懐かしいRiver of Tears（1988年作品）あり、エレクトリックでのシッティングセットでの初アレンジで披露するAfter Midnightあり、とマンネリに陥らないよう配慮したことも窺えます。さらに注目は、中盤のシッティングセットのオープニングとなったブルースの弾き語りを「日替わり」的に変えていたことです。
本作の初日では、マディ・ウォータースのHoney Bee、2日目の最終公演では、同じくマディ・ウォータースのCountry Boy（別名I’m A Country Boy、アルバート・リーの同名曲ではありません）という激レアなナンバーをプレイしています。両曲とも、シッティングセットという形でプレイされたのは初めてですし、後者は恐らくクラプトンのキャリア上初めてのレパートリーではなかったかと思われます。両曲ともドイル・ブラムホールのディープなブルースハープとポール・キャラックのハモンドソロがフィーチャーされています。クラプトンは、このナンバーとAfter Midnightでは雰囲気を出すため、ギブソンL-5というホロウボディのヴィンテージギターにチェンジしています。この高音質ですから、ストラトとは異なるこの音色も楽しんでいただけます。
また、このシッティングセットでプレイされたTears In Heavenもサプライズが継続されました！何と中間のオルガンソロで、ポール・キャラックがプロコル・ハルムの「青い影」をオルガンで演奏しているのです。これは今年2月に亡くなったかつてのバンドメンバーで親友だったゲイリー・ブルッカーへの追悼として、クラプトンが指示したものと考えられます。追悼にはこの曲の歌詞がぴったり符合しますから。それにしても粋な計らいですね。さらに終盤にもサプライズが継続されていました。2006年以降の長年に亘りLittle Quuen Of Spadesをプレイしてきた長尺ブルースコーナーで、何と84年のヨーロッパツアー以来38年ぶりとなるThe Sky Is Crying を持ってきたのです。但し、オリジナルバージョンどおりのスライドプレイではなく、クラプトンはシングルノートでのソロプレイです。「何だ、演奏はいつもどおりで、歌詞がThe Sky Is Cryingに替わっただけか」と思われるかもしれませんが、こうしてセットリストを見てきますと、一つのことに気づきます。クラプトンは、今も元気で活動ができる自分のキャリアを振り返り、それを可能にしてくれた亡き憧れの人たち、友人に思いを馳せるためにこのセットリストを組んだのではないか、ということです。冒頭のGod Save The Queenではエリザベス女王に、I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man、Honey Bee、Country Boyではマディ・ウォータースに、I Shot The Sheriffではボブ・マーリーに、After Midnight、CocaineではJ.J.ケイルに、Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Outではベッシー・スミスに、Tears in Heavenでは息子コナー君とゲイリー・ブルッカーに、Badgeではジョージ・ハリスンに、Crossroads Bluesではロバート・ジョンソンに、The Sky Is Cryingではエルモア・ジェイムズに、High Time We Wentではジョー・コッカーに、という具合です。今のクラプトンは今まで以上に、数々の偉大な故人のおかげで今の自分がいるんだという謙虚な気持ちでステージに立っているような気がします。彼ほどのレジェンドクラスのアーティストになっても感謝の心を忘れない、そこにクラプトンの偉大さがあるのかもしれません。
そして、アンコールにはHigh Time We Wentが戻ってきました。初日公演ではオープニングアクトを務めているジミー・ヴォーンがスペシャルゲストとしてアンコールに参加したため、いつものポール・キャラックをフィーチャーしたこのナンバーではなく、ヴォーンとジャムれるBefore You Accuse Meを選択したのですが、最後に当たっては、キャラックに華を持たせてやりたいというクラプトンの気遣いだったかもしれません。もちろんヴォーンは両日ともアンコールに参加し、ソロフィーチャーされていますので、クラプトンとの和やかなソロ競演も楽しめます。初日のサプライズを継続しながら、立派にツアーを完遂したクラプトン。今月にはヨーロッパを回ります。そこではセットリストはまた変わるのでしょうか。こうしてずっと興味を抱かせ続けてくれるクラプトンの動向を見守っていきたいものです。さあ、どこよりも早くお届けするツアー最終2公演の独占リリースです。どうぞお楽しみください。
