This is the 2022 schedule that has been announced so far. “THE WHISKY 2022” was a promotional internet program that appeared before the release of the new work “DIAMOND STAR HALOS”, but after the album was released, 36 performances of “North America #2 / North America #3” were held. That also just ended the other day, and the future schedule has not been announced yet. It looks like a small tour, but it’s not. All 36 performances are “THE STADIUM Tour”. While alternating headliners with MOTLEY CRUE, we were dealing with a large audience of more than 30,000 people every night, so it was a huge project that mobilized more than 1 million people even at 36 performances. And the San Francisco performance of this work is the final stage. It was the penultimate concert and the final night with DEF LEPPARD closing.
This work, which conveys such a show, has a super clear and direct sound that will wake you up. As a matter of fact, strictly speaking, it is a “matrix album based on an IEM sound board and synchronized with audience recording”, but the feeling I heard is “a sound board directly connected to the desk”. Even if I listen carefully with headphones, I can’t tell if the audience component is just a seasoning, and I can only feel the cheers between songs. And the sound board voice with super clear contours and edges that penetrates the whole story. It invades the brain with its core exposed, and builds a stage inside the skull. Although you can’t expect a spectacle at a large stadium, you can enjoy a powerful sense of synchronization where the live performance and the whole body match perfectly.
Depicted with such a synchronized sound is DEF LEPPARD’s latest stage after the release of “DIAMOND STAR HALOS”. As mentioned above, there was also the first report “THE WHISKY 2022”, but that was a short set for the program, and there were few new songs before the album came out. On the other hand, this work is the final stage of the main tour, and it is a bird appearance at the stadium performance. Let’s sort it out by comparing.

It can be seen that everyone is enjoying the great success of “THE STADIUM Tour”, but Joe Elliott is in particularly good shape. In recent years, the number of shows with weak voice tension has increased, and fatigue has become visible, especially at the end of the tour. I was worried about this work only for the second show from the end of the tour, but why is it a wonderful singing voice? Both the tension and the street are rejuvenated and give the original brilliance to the masterpiece group.
Following “THE WHISKY 2022”, a complete official-class pro shot, this full soundboard work. Although the number of records in 2022 is small, two extremely outstanding ones were born. Both MOTLEY CRUE and DEF LEPPARD have professed that they want to go to Asia with ‘THE STADIUM Tour’ next year. そんな本作に収められているのは「2022年９月７日サンフランシスコ公演」。そのIEMサウンドボード録音です。今年のDEF LEPPARDと言えば、第一報となった極上プロショット『THE WHISKY 2022（Shades 1539）』も記憶に新しいところ。その辺も含め、まずは現在進行形の活動概要からおさらいしてみましょう。

これが現在までに公表されている2022年のスケジュール。『THE WHISKY 2022』は新作『DIAMOND STAR HALOS』リリース前にプロモーション出演したネット番組だったわけですが、アルバム発売後には「北米#2／北米#3」の36公演を実施。それも先日終了したばかりで、今後のスケジュールはまだ発表されていません。何とも小ぶりなツアーにも見えますが、実はそうではありません。この36公演すべてが“THE STADIUM Tour”。MOTLEY CRUEと交互にヘッドライナーを交代しつつ、毎夜毎晩３万人以上の大観衆を相手にしていたのですから、36公演でも100万人以上を動員する巨大プロジェクトなのです。そして本作のサンフランシスコ公演は、その最終盤。最後から２番目のコンサートで、DEF LEPPARDがトリを務めた最後の夜でした。
そんなショウを伝える本作は、目も醒めるような超クリア＆ダイレクト・サウンド。実のところ、厳密には「IEMサウンドボードをベースにしつつ、オーディエンス録音もシンクロさせたマトリクス・アルバム」なのですが、聴いた感じは「卓直結系サウンドボード」。オーディエンス成分は味付け程度なのかヘッドフォンで耳を澄ませてもよく分からず、曲間の歓声くらいしか感じられない。そして、全編を貫くのは輪郭もエッジも超クッキリしたサウンドボード音声。芯もむき出しで脳内に侵入し、頭蓋の中にステージを組み上げてしまう。スタジアムの大会場スペクタクルなどは望めないものの、生演奏と全身が完全一致する強力なシンクロ感を味わえるのです。
そんなシンクロ・サウンドで描かれるのは、『DIAMOND STAR HALOS』リリースを経たDEF LEPPARDの最新ステージ。前述のように第一報の『THE WHISKY 2022』もありましたが、あれは番組用のショートセットでしたし、アルバムが出る前で新曲も少なめでした。それに対して本作は本編ツアーでも最終盤であり、スタジアム公演のトリ出演なのです。早速、比較しながら整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。「Let It Go」「Two Steps Behind」「Promises」とクラシックスの幅を広げ、そこに新曲「This Guitar」も追加。新旧に渡ってボリュームアップしたフルショウが楽しめるのです。さらに、そんなセットを綴るパフォーマンスが素晴らしい。全員が“THE STADIUM Tour”の大成功を楽しんでいるのが伝わって来ますが、特に絶好調なのがジョー・エリオット。近年では声の張りが弱いショウも増えており、特にツアー終盤は疲れが見えるようにもなりました。本作もツアー最後から２番目のショウだけに危惧していたのですが、なかなかどうして素晴らしい歌声。張りも通りもグッと若返り、名曲群に本来の輝きを与えているのです。
完全オフィシャル級プロショットの『THE WHISKY 2022』に続き、フル・サウンドボードの本作。2022年の記録は本数こそ少ないものの、あまりにも極めつけな２本が誕生したわけです。MOTLEY CRUEもDEF LEPPARDも「来年は“THE STADIUM Tour”でアジアにも行きたい」と公言しています。それが実現する事を切に願いつつ、今はこの大傑作を思う存分お楽しみください。
