The 1986 DAVID LEE ROTH BAND (commonly known as EAT ‘EM BAND) has become legendary as “the strongest HR unit in history” with a transcendent string team of Steve Vai & Billy Sheehan. The best masterpiece is brushed up. A press 2CD that permanently preserves the detailed sound of “GRAF ZEPPELIN” is now available.
[History of live album exploration of the strongest unit] “Performance at Fresno on September 14, 1986” is engraved on this work. It is the best audience recording. The strongest triangle “Dave / Steve / Billy” announced two studio works “EAT ‘EM AND SMILE” and “SKYSCRAPER”, but only “EAT ‘EM AND SMILE Tour” live. Moreover, the record was hopeless and no kind of soundboard was left (In recent years, Billy has said that he has a pro shot video of the time, but he does not intend to publish it without Dave’s permission, and currently Not a single fragment comes out, and he says, “The audio in the video is good, but not great.”) It is a very unfortunate situation because the strongest performance entertainment showed its true value only at live performances.In that case, it is the providence of mania that the focus is narrowed down to the “apex audience”. Over the years, the “best sound” and “perfect form of live performance” have been pursued, and each time a record is unearthed, the “decisive battle of the champion recording” has been unfolded. The dispute came to an end in 2016. To commemorate the 30th anniversary from the live scene, the original master of the Fresno performance was discovered.
“This master was truly a “champion”.” Until then, Fresno recordings had been known for their highest sound quality, but unfortunately they were incomplete CDs. Conversely, other complete recordings fell far short of Fresno recordings in terms of sound. However, the original master of the Fresno performance was completely recorded with the sound upgraded further. It embodies the “ultimate live album”, and our press masterpiece “FRESNO 1986 COMPLETE”, which permanently preserved its brilliance, was also a big hit. [Ultra-natural mastering of the ultimate recording] “FRESNO 1986 COMPLETE” is also sold out. Only Omoto master, no further young generation upgrade has occurred. This is where this work comes into play. “GRAF ZEPPELIN” refined the legendary Omoto master with fine mastering and finished it in the ultimate form that maximizes its potential.
In fact, the sound is crisp and clear yet super natural. In the first place, the Fresno recording was so strong that it was also distributed as a sound board, the outline was vivid and the teal was clear. Perhaps because of its awesomeness, it tended to be mastered with HR power pushed to the fore. However, the concept of “GRAF ZEPPELIN” mastering is “faithful reproduction of on-site sounds”. The natural sound that was heard at the venue at that time was faithfully reproduced without any rough sound pressure gain. On top of that, the details are polished to increase the vividness.
Specifically, it involves strict correction of pitch and phase, balance adjustment after band analysis, and noise processing. A method that takes you to the limit. In other words, mastering is like repair work for paintings and cultural assets. As a result, the details are not crushed by sound pressure gain, and the sense of stability is outstanding with phase correction that does not allow a 1/1000 second shift. Even if noise processing is performed, it is performed after determining the limit of the fineness where the performance sound does not change, so the fine parts are not scraped. In “Guitar & Bass Solos”, Steve & Billy roared a fierce battle, and it snowed into the unreleased instrumental song “Instrumental Jam”. Moreover, it’s not just fast-playing and bomb-like. The impromptu phrases are extremely catchy and you won’t get tired of listening to them, and they are humorous like conversations.

【最強ユニットのライヴアルバム探究史】
そんな本作に刻まれているのは「1986年９月14日フレズノ公演」。その極上オーディエンス録音です。最強トライアングル「デイヴ／スティーヴ／ビリー」は２枚のスタジオ作品『EAT ‘EM AND SMILE』『SKYSCRAPER』を発表しましたが、ライヴでは“EAT ‘EM AND SMILE Tour”のみ。しかも、その記録は絶望的でサウンドボードの類は一切残されませんでした（近年ビリーが当時のプロショット・ビデオを持っていると発言しましたが、デイヴの許可なく公開する気はなく、現在に至るまで断片も出てきていません。また「ビデオの音声は良いけど素晴らしくはない」とも語っています）。最強の演奏エンターテインメントはライヴでこそ真価を発揮していただけに、あまりにも、あまりにも残念な状況です。
そうなると「頂点オーディエンス」に焦点が絞られるのはマニアの摂理。長年に渡って「最も良い音」「ライヴの完全形」が追い求められ、記録が１本１本発掘される度に「王者録音の決定戦」が繰り広げられてきたのです。そして、その争いに決着が着いたのは2016年のこと。ライヴの現場から30周年を記念し、フレズノ公演の大元マスターが発掘されたのです。
このマスターはまさに「王者」でした。それまでもフレズノ録音は最高音質として知られてきましたが、残念ながら不完全なCD１枚物だった。逆に、他の完全録音たちはサウンド面でフレズノ録音に遠く及ばなかったのです。ところが、フレズノ公演の大元マスターはサウンドが一層アップグレードした上に完全収録。まさに「究極のライヴアルバム」を体現しており、その輝きを永久保存した当店のプレス名盤『FRESNO 1986 COMPLETE』も大ヒットを記録したのです。
【究極録音を超ナチュラル派マスタリング】
そんな『FRESNO 1986 COMPLETE』も完売・廃盤。大元マスターだけに、それ以上の若ジェネ・アップグレードも起こっていません。そこで登場するのが本作。伝説的な大元マスターを「GRAF ZEPPELIN」が細密マスタリングで磨き直し、その可能性を最大限に引き出した究極形に仕上げたのです。
実際、そのサウンドははっきりクッキリとしていながらスーパー・ナチュラルでもある。そもそもフレズノ録音はサウンドボードとしても流通していたほど芯が力強く、輪郭も鮮やかでティールも鮮明。その凄みにあてられてか、HRパワーを前面に押し出したマスタリングに仕上げられがちでした。しかし「GRAF ZEPPELIN」マスタリングは「現場音の忠実再現」こそがコンセプト。雑な音圧稼ぎなどはせず、当時の会場で鳴っていた自然なサウンドを忠実に再現。その上で細部を磨き上げることで鮮やかさを増しているのです。
具体的に言いますとピッチや位相の厳密補正、帯域分析を経た上でのバランス調整、それにノイズ処理……つまり「派手化・ゴカマシ化」ではなく、テープやデジタル化の際に発生する劣化を極限まで整えていく手法。言わば、絵画や文化財の補修作業のようなマスタリングなのです。その結果、音圧稼ぎで細部が潰れることもなく、1/1000秒のズレも許さない位相補正で安定感もズバ抜けている。ノイズ処理にしても演奏音が変化しない限界スレスレのラインを見極めてから行いますので、微細部が削られてしまう事もないのです。
