“VAN HALEN is over,” said Diamond Dave, who announced the resumption of full-scale solo activities for the first time in 13 years. Introducing a masterpiece live album that was unearthed as if to celebrate his restart.
“January 23, 1987 Uniondale performance” is included in this work. It is a full audience recording that recorded one act of the glorious “EAT’EM AND SMILE TOUR”. There are countless special tours in rock history, but none are as special as this one. After all, with the strongest strings team in history: Steve Vai & Billy Sheehan, Dave is full of charisma, not to take a step in front of the fierce men. It was a one-of-a-kind era that brought out the “ultimate American HR”. However, despite the ultimate, there is no full sound board, let alone an official live album. For that reason, each audience recording is valuable. The new excavation of “EAT’EM AND SMILE TOUR” is an incident in itself for enthusiasts / collectors.
That’s why this work is making enthusiasts confused, but first of all, the position of the show. Let’s confirm the position of this work from the schedule at that time.
● 1986
“Released” EAT’EM AND SMILE “on July 7”
・ August 16-October 11: North America # 1 (38 performances)
・ October 23-December 19: North America # 2 (38 performances)
● 1987
・ January 7-February 22: North America # 3 (28 performances) ← ★ Coco ★
This is the whole picture of the ultimate tour. Not to mention Japan, Europe and Oceania did not go around, and only North America was fully lapped three times. No matter how much my home country was the main battlefield, it’s a schedule that makes Americans more envious. At our shop, we have delivered masterpieces of “EAT’EM AND SMILE TOUR”, but they are all “1986”. This is the first edition of the 1987 edition, which has changed its year. The Uniondale performance was the 11th performance of “North America # 3”.
The sound of this work is also wonderful. I mentioned earlier that it was just a new excavation, but it is a beautiful recording that goes beyond mere preciousness. Although it is hard to say that it exceeds the top work “FRESNO 1986 COMPLETE (Zodiac 300)”, its clearness and beauty of sound are comparable. It is digitized directly from the Omoto master cassette, and there are no dubbing marks or deterioration over time. Although it is (a little) farther from the upcoming “FRESNO 1986 COMPLETE”, the glossy and beautiful playing sound arrives straight at hand. You can enjoy the miracle ensemble in every corner.
And what is drawn with that sound is a Uniondale performance that I have never heard before. The set is standard for the tour, but it’s a good opportunity to organize it here.
● EAT’EM AND SMILE (8 songs)
・ Shyboy / Tobacco Road / Elephant Gun / Ladies Night in Buffalo? / Bump and Grind / Big Trouble / Yankee Rose / Goin’Crazy!
● VAN HALEN (7 songs)
・ VAN HALEN: Ice Cream Man / Ain’t Talkin’Bout Love
・ WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST: Everybody Wants Some !!
・ FAIR WARNING: Unchained
・ DIVER DOWN: (Oh) Pretty Woman
・ 1984: Panama / Jump
● Others
・ Instrumental Jam / California Girls
… And it looks like this. Approximately half of the show is the masterpiece “EAT’EM AND SMILE”, and all songs except “I’m Easy” and “That’s Life” are performed on a large scale. The other half is VAN HALEN’s masterpieces. In addition, all songs are included, from Vai & Billy’s solo battle to the unreleased instrumental jam that falls into the snow and the festive “California Girls”. And the performance of spinning the set is amazing. The “EAT’EM AND SMILE” number is more than the album, and the VAN HALEN number is also upgraded. It’s not just a bacatek, its phrasing is full of humor and spills, and rock dynamism explodes. I’m sure I’m playing fast, but I can’t bring out the excitement by just playing fast. Vai and Billy have a more genius musical sense than technique, and when they come together, they will enhance each other many times. The strongest hard rock band in history. You can fully experience the full show with great sound.
A live album of “EAT’EM BAND” that makes me happy just to listen to many performances. However, the quality of this work goes beyond that dimension and has reached one of the best levels. First and foremost, you have to experience the top board “FRESNO 1986 COMPLETE”, but it is the best one for “the next”. If VAN HALEN is really over, please team up with Vai & Billy again. A masterpiece that turns that wish into a longing. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.
