After the Newport Folk Festival, Bob Dylan suddenly transformed into a rock musician with a backing band in 1965, but he still has many songs from his early days as a band, such as “NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL 1965” and “LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL,” which are currently on sale. Although there is a sound board that captures , it is extremely limited when it comes to live sound sources for 65 years. “THE GINSBERG TAPES 1965” was the sound source of mania surprises all over the world that was excavated in such a situation.
At a time when there were very few sound sources, the mere fact that two performances could be found at once shocked maniacs all over the world, but what spurred this on was the performance by Allen Ginsberg, a poet who was close to Dylan. That means. If it is a sound source that captures the band live in 1965, it would be appreciated even if the recording was left. However, he recorded almost the full-length version of the stage on both days, so it was hard. In fact, most of the audience recordings from 1965 that are left outside of these two days are fragments that were barely recorded by fans. In that respect, Ginsberg deserves a lot of credit for capturing both Dylan’s singing part and the stage with the band.
What is most surprising is the recording condition that is so easy to hear that it is hard to believe that it is an audience recording in 1965. In fact, there are audience recordings of Dylan in 1965 before he changed to a stage with a band, but the sound image is so blurry that it is difficult to listen to it. In that respect, Ginsberg’s recording is easy to hear in a different dimension. It was a historic discovery, and it’s no surprise that the 2017 release sold out in no time.

Of the two days recorded by Ginsberg, only the band part for San Jose on December 12th has been circulating among traders from early on, and several items have been released, starting with the nostalgic WANTED MAN “LONG DISTANCE OPERATOR”. Ta. At the beginning of the 1990s, when soundboard recordings were the norm, it felt like the 1965 audience recording was a disappointment, but it received high praise for its extremely valuable setlist and surprisingly easy-to-listen sound quality. did.
However, when “THE GINSBERG TAPES 1965” was released, there was actually a recording of Dylan singing and playing the stage. Even more than that, it was discovered that the previously released version was based on a tape that had undergone considerable dubbing from the master owned by Ginsberg. It was a historical excavation in this respect as well, but the freshness of the master is truly amazing. It reminds us that the tapes were carefully stored there as Ginsburg’s belongings.
Speaking of 1965, PA systems for rock concerts had not been established at all, so it is no wonder that the audience recording was recorded in a roaring and rough state. However, Ginsberg’s recording is surprising because the band parts on both days are recorded with wonderful balance and clarity. Especially on the second day, the clarity is outstanding.

In this way, it became an audience recording with too high historical value, but the content is also extremely valuable. In the singing part, “Visions Of Johanna” was performed, which had just been composed and had not even had an official title (the tentative title given at the time was “Freeze Out”). Instead, “Gates Of Eden”, which was just before it was dropped from the repertoire, is sung.
When this becomes a band part, “Tombstone Blues” and band arrangement “It Ain’t me Babe” are still being played, and the ultimate is “Long Distance Operator” which is a super rare repertoire that was played only during this period ”. They will release a cover version after becoming the band later, but it is too valuable that the song of the author Dylan and the scene being played live were captured.
In addition, Dylan has a strong impression that he was performing on stage with the band while being booed after Newport, but there was no such jeering here, and rather it was received favorably so that voices saying “Bravo!” It was a big shock to see them being captured. It is true that Levon Helm left the backing band because of the booing (Sandy Konikoff replaced him, Bobby Gregg the following year), but in December, the rise in popularity prevailed and the booing also started in the United States. So it was settled.
And now, the historical value as a record of young Robbie Robertson’s guitar playing has become immeasurable (Robbie is actually playing a lot). Lastly, for this re-release, Graf Zeppelin has undertaken a vintage audience restoration. For example, the twists that were seen here and there in the intro of San Francisco’s “Baby Let Me Follow You Down” were precisely adjusted. The long-awaited re-appearance and version upgrade of the super valuable audience who has a reputation for the good sound that you can’t believe was originally recorded in 1965!

ニューポート・フォーク・フェスティバル以降バックバンドを従えたロックミュージシャンに豹変した1965年のボブ・ディランでしたが、好評発売中の『NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL 1965』や『LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL』といったバンド活動の初期を捉えたサウンドボードこそ存在するものの、以降の65年ライブ音源となると極端に限られてしまう。こうした状況の中で発掘された世界中のマニア驚愕の音源が『THE GINSBERG TAPES 1965』でした。
音源の極めて少ない時期にあって、一気に二公演も見つかったというだけでも世界中のマニアを驚愕させた訳ですが、そこに拍車をかけたのはディランと親しかった詩人アレン・ギンズバーグによって行われたという事。65年のバンドライブを捉えた音源であれば録音が残されていただけでもありがたいというもの。ところが彼は両日のステージのほぼ全長版を録音してくれていたからさあ大変。実際これら二日間以外で残されている65年のオーディエンス録音というのはファンによってかろうじて録音された断片的なものがほとんど。その点ギンズバーグはディランの弾き語りパートとバンドとのステージの両方を捉えてくれた功績が大きすぎる。
何より驚かされるのは1965年のオーディエンス録音だとは思えないほど聞きやすい録音状態。実際バンドを従えたステージに変化する前から65年のディランに関してはオーディエンス録音が存在するのですが、それは音像がボヤボヤで聞きこむのが苦になるレベルだったりします。その点ギンズバーグの録音は異次元の聞きやすさ。2017年のリリースがあっという間に売り切れてしまったのも当然と言える歴史的発掘でした。

もっともギンズバーグによって録音され二日間の内、12月12日のサンノゼに関してはバンド・パートだけ早くからトレーダー間に出回っており、懐かしのWANTED MAN『LONG DISTANCE OPERATOR』を皮切りとしていくつかのアイテムがリリースされました。サウンドボード録音アイテムばかりが当たり前だった1990年代初頭にあって65年のオーディエンス録音に肩透かしを食らった感があったものの、あまりに貴重なセットリストと意外なほど聞きやすい音質で高い評価を受けたのでした。
ところが『THE GINSBERG TAPES 1965』がリリースされてみれば実際にはディラン弾き語りステージも録音が存在。それ以上に既発盤がギンズバーグ所有のマスターからかなりのダビングを経たテープを元にしていたことまで判明してしまったのです。この点においても歴史的な発掘となったのですが、マスターの鮮度は本当に驚くほど。そこはギンズバーグの遺品としてテープが丁寧に保管されていたであろうことを偲ばせてくれるもの。
1965年といえばロックコンサートのPAシステムなどまるで確立されておらず、オーディエンス録音が轟音の荒れくれ状態で録音されたとしても何ら不思議ではない。しかしギンズバーグの録音は両日のバンド・パートが共に見事なバランスとクリアーさで録音されているから驚きでしかない。特に二日目はクリアーさが際立っている。

こうして歴史的な価値が高すぎるオーディエンス録音となった訳ですが、内容がまた貴重の極み。弾き語りパートでは作曲されたばかりで正式なタイトルすら決まっていなかった「Visions Of Johanna」が披露（当時付けられた仮の曲名は「Freeze Out」）。代わりにレパートリーから落とされる直前の「Gates Of Eden」が歌われているのもしかり。
これがバンド・パートになると「Tombstone Blues」やバンド・アレンジの「It Ain’t me Babe」が未だに演奏されており、極めつけはこの時期だけしか演奏されなかった超レア・レパートリーである「Long Distance Operator」。後にザ・バンドとなってから彼らがカバー・バージョンを発表することになりますが、作者ディランの歌かつライブで演奏されていた場面が捉えられたのは貴重すぎる。
さらにニューポート以降ブーイングに包まれながらバンドとのステージをこなしていた印象の強いディランですが、ここではそうした野次がまるでなく、むしろ「ブラボー！」と言った声が飛び交うほど好意的に受け取られている様子が捉えられているのも大きな衝撃でした。確かにブーイングが原因でバックバンドからリヴォン・ヘルムが抜けてしまった（代役はサンディ・コニコフ、翌年はボビー・グレッグ）のは事実ですが、12月にもなると人気の上昇が勝ってブーイングもアメリカでは収まっていたのです。
そして今となっては若きロビー・ロバートソンのギタープレイの記録としても歴史的な価値が計り知れなくなってしまった（実際ロビーは弾きまくっています）。とどめは今回の再リリースに際して「Graf Zeppelin」がビンテージ・オーディエンスのレストアを敢行。例えばサンフランシスコの「Baby Let Me Follow You Down」のイントロで散見されたヨレをきっちりアジャスト。元々65年の録音とは思えない音の良さに定評のある超貴重オーディエンスが待望の再登場＆バージョンアップ！
