このように、1月末から2月頭にかけてオジーの病気による延期が発生しましたが、ほぼ10日後に復帰。本作は、その復帰後にあたるショウなのです。先ほども書きましたが、このツアーからは初日以外、ほぼ全公演の音源や映像が登場しており、1公演でも複数の録音が出てくるといった盛況ぶり。しかも、驚くべき事にそのクオリティのレベルが異様に高い! もちろん、中にはダメ音、カットだらけのものもありますが、ほとんどがプレスしてもおかしくないサウンド。早くも無数の記録に溢れ出した“THE END”の中から厳選に厳選を重ねた4枚組、それが本作なのです。
実際、本作のクオリティは見事なほどのプレス級サウンド、いや、サウンドボード級サウンドです。ディスク1・2のサンノゼ公演はダイレクト感たっぷりな図太い楽音で、リフの1音1音までクッキリ。その輪郭の中を艶やかな低音の響きが満たすような見事さ。それでいてサウンドボードとは違う“現場感”も素晴らしい。とにかく、冒頭の「Black Sabbath」からして最高に壮大。ゆったりと間のあるイントロ・リフの中をオジーが妖しく歌っていくわけですが、その一言一言に沸く大歓声と言ったら! 現場となった“SAPセンター”は、約2万人収容のスポーツアリーナですが、その巨大な空間を満たしていく大歓声の広いこと広いこと。遠くの熱狂ほど小さく、時間差まである。サウンドボードでは決して味わえない立体感、空間感覚をたっぷりと感じさせながら、楽音にはまるで距離感がないダイレクトさ。同時リリースの2CD「WINNIPEG 2016」は、聴いたこともないような異常サウンド故にプレスされたわけですが、こちらはオーソドックスでありながら理想的な“客席録音の鏡”。その美点を最大限活かすべく、自然な鳴りをそのままに、わずかではありますがメリハリを強めたマスタリングで仕上げました。
代わってのディスク3・4は、ツアー9回目のデンバー公演。ちょっと、ここで下らないゴタクを並べさせてください。この公演からは複数の録音が登場しており、「フル収録の高音質マスター」と「カットのある超高音質マスター」が知られています。本作に収録したのは、「フル収録の高音質マスター」の方。当初、2つのマスターをパッチすることも検討されましたが、実際に制作してみると2つの録音の相性が今ひとつ(「CHICAGO 2016(Shades 619)」はこの手法で制作されており、相性の良いときは最高の仕上がりになるのですが……)。そこで、今回は「フル収録版」をリマスタリングで向上させました。強すぎた高音やホールの残響を拾いすぎた中音域を緩和して整理したところ、まるで別のサウンドに変貌! 確かにネットに登場した原音のままでは「カット版」の方が高音質だったのですが、「フル収録版」のサウンドには伸びしろが大きく、結果として「カット版」をも超えるサウンドを実現。見目麗しいサンノゼ公演(ディスク1・2)にも匹敵するクオリティに仕上がったのです。

第1報となった「CHICAGO 2016」の解説では、「今後、本作を超える録音が登場するのか、登場してほしい。でも無理かも知れない……」と書きましたが、どうやら杞憂に終わったようです。むしろ、厳選しがいのある、マスタリングしがいのある録音の数々に嬉しい悲鳴を上げそうなほどの盛況ぶり。そして、ピラミッドは底辺が広いほど高くなるわけで、本作のような超高音質タイトルが可能になりました。
オジーの歌声、パフォーマンスに副鼻腔炎の影響は感じられませんが、少しずつ短くなるセットリストには現れている。サンノゼ公演ではツアー初頭では演奏していた「Under The Sun」が消え、デンバー公演ではさらに「God Is Dead?」もない。逆に、短くなったからこその体力の余裕、集中力が感じられる。今後、どんなセットに変化していくのか分かりませんが、これもまたリアルタイムだからこその面白さです。“ギネス級サウンド”でプレス化を果たした「WINNIPEG 2016」はもちろん無論の必聴盤ですが、あの超傑作のすぐ直後にも傑作録音群が引き続いている。それを選りすぐって磨き上げた頂点のライヴセット。伝説のバンド、BLACK SABBATH最後の歩みをリアルタイムで味わっていく4枚組。ぜひ、あなたもこの歴史的な“今”を共に歩んでいきましょう。
