The Ian Gillan era, which boasts the greatest cult popularity in the history of Sabas. Introducing a document album that allows you to experience a special time “1984” even in a special time.
It was “January 26, 1984 Long Beach Performance” that was imbued with this work. It is the excellent audience recording. “Live in the Giran era”, which was an unknown world at that time, is now familiar with the formalized Reading Festival and the super-famous board “CAPTURED LIVE 1983: PRE-FM MASTER (Zodiac 489)”. However, “1984” is also a time when it is a little different from the standard. First, let’s imagine the situation in that area with the schedule at that time.

…… And it looks like this. “Rock’n’Roll Doctor” with new songs “Disturbing the Priest” and “Supernaut” is also delicious, but these repertoires were “EUROLINES” and I couldn’t hear the soundboard. More important than that is “Neon Knights”! Giran sang only two Ronnie songs, “Neon Knights” and “Heaven and Hell”, and especially “Neon Knights” was played only in 1984. After all, Giran is a prideful person who refuses even “Burn”. The Ronnie song he sings is extremely valuable. Moreover, the song is a must listen. Giran and Ronnie have so different vocal ranges that they are far from the famous singing in this work, but they are still good fights. I try to get through the silent part with a forcible shout, but in the latter half of the tour it withers and is gaa gaa. However, in this second performance, (?) Has survived properly.
Although it was late, the sound of this work, which recorded such a precious show, is also excellent. It’s a vintage audience, not a type that can be mistaken for a sound board. However, the powerful core does not have a squishy feeling, and Giran’s vocals are clear word by word in the lyrics and the nuances of singing. The bass, which tends to be a weak point in the audience, is also wonderful, and Geezer’s bass has a sharp rising attack, and the groove is brisk. Despite being so powerful, the glossiness that does not collapse even at the peak is also wonderful. Moreover, this work is the highest peak. Stabilizes the original sound that was partially out of pitch. We are pursuing the perfection as a musical work by reducing hiss noise within the range that does not pollute the original sound.
Anyway, speaking of the live performance of the Giran era, the sound board trilogy of Official Dela Eddie / “CAPTURED LIVE 1983: PRE-FM MASTER” / “EUROLINES” is absolute. It cannot be denied. However, “Giran’s Neon Knights” is a treasure that cannot be experienced on such a famous soundboard album. A new masterpiece that is perfect for experiencing such an unexplored region “1984”. Please enjoy this work of the highest peak version to your heart’s content.

★ Excellent audience recording of “January 26, 1984 Long Beach Performance”. The powerful core does not have a squishy feeling, and Giran’s vocals have clear lyrics and nuances of singing. Furthermore, it is the highest peak version that pursues perfection as a musical work by meticulous mastering. The Giran version of “Neon Knights”, which cannot be heard in the masterpiece SBD “CAPTURED LIVE 1983”, is also a delicious and valuable experience of “Sabas in 1984”.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1984年１月26日ロングビーチ公演」。その絶品オーディエンス録音です。当時は未知なる世界だった「ギラン時代のライヴ」も、現在では公式化されたレディング・フェスや超名盤『CAPTURED LIVE 1983: PRE-FM MASTER（Zodiac 489）』等でお馴染み。しかし「1984年」は、そうしたド定番とはちょっと違う時期でもあります。まずは、当時のスケジュールでその辺の状況をイメージしてみましょう。

そんな「1984年」は他と何が違うのか？　それは何よりもセットリスト。ここで最高傑作サウンドボード『CAPTURED LIVE 1983: PRE-FM MASTER』と比較しながら整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。新曲「Disturbing the Priest」や「Supernaut」を交えた「Rock ‘n’ Roll Doctor」も美味しいのですが、これらのレパートリーは『EUROLINES』でサウンドボードが聴けなくもなかった。それより重要なのは「Neon Knights」！　ギランが歌ったロニー曲は「Neon Knights」「Heaven and Hell」の２曲だけであり、特に「Neon Knights」は1984年でしか演奏していない。何しろ、ギランは「Burn」ですら拒否するプライドの高い人。そんな彼が歌うロニー曲は極めて貴重なのです。しかも、その歌いっぷりも必聴。ギランとロニーはあまりにも声域が異なっており、本作でも名唱とはほど遠いわけですが、それでも善戦。声の出ないパートを強引シャウトで乗り切ろうとするのですが、ツアー後半では枯れてギャアギャア。ところが、まだ２公演目の本作ではちゃんと（？）乗り切れているのです。
申し遅れましたが、そんな貴重なショウを記録した本作は、サウンドも絶品。あくまでヴィンテージ・オーディエンスであり、サウンドボードと間違えるようなタイプでもない。しかし、力強い芯にはスカスカ感がまるでなく、ギランのヴォーカルは歌詞の一語一語も、歌い回しのニュアンスもクッキリ克明。オーディエンスでは弱点になりがちな低音も素晴らしく、ギーザーのベースは立ち上がりのアタックも鋭ければ、ブリブリとしたグルーヴも手応えたっぷり。それだけパワフルなのにも関わらず、ピークでも潰れない艶やかさも素晴らしい。しかも、本作はその最高峰。部分的にピッチが狂っていた原音をビシッと安定化。本来の鳴りを汚さないギリギリの範囲でヒスノイズも落とし、音楽作品としての完成度を追求しているのです。
何はともあれ、ギラン時代のライヴと言えば、公式デラエディ／『CAPTURED LIVE 1983: PRE-FM MASTER』／『EUROLINES』のサウンドボード三部作は絶対。それは否定のしようもありません。しかし、「ギランのNeon Knights」は、そうした有名サウンドボード・アルバムでは味わえない秘宝なのです。そんな秘境「1984年」を体験するのに最適な新名盤。どうぞ、最高峰版の本作で存分にお楽しみください。
