1962年英国でデビュー以来1970年の解散までの8年間にビートルズは英本国13枚のオリジナル・アルバムをリリースしている。
1960年代前半は一般的にステレオ再生装置が普及の途上にあり、レコードはモノラルが主流で、ビートルズに関してもミキシング作業はモノラルが基本で、ステレオは後追いで制作されていた。
結果的にモノラル、ステレオ別々にマスター・テープが作られ、その為テイクやミックスの違いが生まれ、別バージョンとして様々な音源が存在することになる。
ビートルズ・デビュー当時のEMIスタジオ（アビイ・ロード・スタジオ）は現在とはかけ離れた質素な環境でレコーディング設備は基本的に2トラック。
デビュー・アルバム『プリーズ・プリーズ・ミー』ではスタジオ・ライヴのようにヴォーカル、演奏は1発録りで行われ、オーバーダブもほとんどされていない。
2トラックからのステレオ・ミックスでは、ボーカルと演奏が左右に振り分けられただけの安易に簡略したステレオ・ミックスで、これは次のアルバムまで続き、当時はモノラルが主流でステレオに関しては拘りなく、ただ形式的に制作するだけだったことを伺わせる。
1963年10月、シングル盤「抱きしめたい」がビートルズの楽曲で初めて4トラック・レコーダーが使用されたレコーディングとして、それまでのステレオ・ミックスから進化して以降、
アルバム3作目の『ア・ハード・デイズ・ナイト』から『ザ・ビートルズ（ホワイト・アルバム）』の録音途中でアビイ・ロード・スタジオが8トラック・レコーダーを導入するまでは、基本的に4トラックでオーバーダブを重ねるレコーディング環境であった。
マルチトラック・レコーディングによるアルバム『アビイ・ロード』はステレオのみのリリースだったが、それ以前のアルバムはすべてモノラル、ステレオの2通りの発売が継続されており、それぞれミックスの異なるマスターが制作されてきた。
1970年代以降はステレオが主流となり、モノラル・ミックスは過去の音として忘れ去られていたが、1987年初めてビートルズの全アルバムがCD化されることになる。
監修を依頼されたジョージ・マーティンは旧態然としたステレオの違和感の解消に向かう。しかしCD発売日間際、納得のいくリミックス・アンド・リマスターが間に合わず、初期4アルバムはモノラル、『ヘルプ！』『ラバー・ソウル』の2タイトルのみ新たにリミックスした音源を採用、『リボルバー』以降はレコード時代同様のステレオ・ミックスをCD化してリリースされた。
1990年代に入ると『アンソロジー3部作』『ライブ・アット・ザ・BBC』といったオリジナル・アルバム以外の未発表音源のリリースが続いていく中で、1999年『イエロー・サブマリン・ソングトラック』として初めてマルチトラックを駆使したリミックス・アルバムが登場。以降、2003年『レット・イット・ビー…ネイキッド』、2006年『LOVE』といったリミックス・アルバムのリリースが続くことになる。
2009年には1987年の初CD化から長年にわたって中途半端なリリースだった全アルバムのCDが、デジタル・マスタリングの技術も向上したことで、満を持して2009年デジタル・リマスター盤として生まれ変わる。リミックスではないオリジナル・マスター音源を基本とした上で細やかな修正や改良が施され、ステレオ、モノラルで公式213曲オリジナル全作品がリリースされた。現在もこれが定番の音源となっている。
一方で同じ2009年には『ザ・ビートルズ：ロックバンド』としてゲームソフトが発売。ゲーム用としてオリジナル・マスター音源のリマスターとは対極にマルチ・トラック音源からボーカルやギター、ベース、ドラムスがミキサーによって分離された音源が登場。これらを元にした数多くのリミックス・バリエーションの存在は既にビートルズ・コレクターの間ではお馴染み。
近年では2017年の『サージェント・ペッパーズ』発売50周年記念リミックスからアルバム単位で最新リミックス・リマスターBOXのリリースが話題となっており、現在進行形でビートルズの音源は時代と共に進化を続けている。
