The legendary Allan Holdsworth’s first visit to Japan in the 1980s. An original recording that allows you to fully experience the scene will be released as a gift.
What is written in this work is “May 11, 1984: Tokyo Postal Savings Hall.” It is an exquisite audience recording that vacuum-packs the whole story. Speaking of Holdsworth’s first visit to Japan, it is known for leaving behind the official video “TOKYO DREAM”, which later became the official live album “LIVE IN JAPAN 1984”. This work is not the complete version… but a separate performance. In order to understand the situation around that, let’s first look back at the legendary schedule for coming to Japan.

That’s all 4 performances. The last performance was two consecutive performances at the Tokyo Postal Savings Hall, and the official “TOKYO DREAM” was filmed on the last day. This work was a concert three days before that.
This work recorded at such a show is an extremely clear masterpiece recording. This is a masterpiece that was made into a CD directly from the original master given directly by the recording artist himself, and because it is the original master, it has a beautiful sound with no dubbing marks. It also absorbs the sound of the hall, so it’s not the type to be mistaken for a sound board, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t feel far away. The powerful core pierces the clear air, and the beautiful sound gives it a crystal clear shine. What makes his brilliance even more outstanding is the mood on set. There was no audience noise in the quiet venue, and the only excitement was the loud applause that suddenly erupted between songs. The subtleties of performance are an exquisite sound world where even the most minute nuances can be clearly heard.

Unfortunately, there is a momentary sound loss at 2:23 of “Shallow Sea”, and there is a cut in the first 4 bars of “Metal Fatigue” intro, so it is not a complete version, but “Shallow Sea” which was not included in the official video. The opening part of “Letters Of Marque” and “Up Country” are perfect. You can fully enjoy the panoramic view of the show. Also, his performance is worthy of his legendary name. It is the most rock-oriented style of Holdsworth’s solo career, and it is different from the calm and fluent technique that followed, and is wild and tough.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1984年５月11日：東京郵便貯金会館」。その一部始終を真空パックした絶品オーディエンス録音です。ホールズワースの初来日と言えば、何をさておいても公式映像『TOKYO DREAM』が残された事で知られ、その後に公式ライヴアルバム『LIVE IN JAPAN 1984』にもなりました。本作はその完全版………ではなく、別公演。その辺の状況を把握するためにも、まずは伝説の来日スケジュールから振り返ってみましょう。

以上、全４公演。その最後は東京郵便貯金会館での２連続公演で、公式『TOKYO DREAM』が撮影されたのは最終日。本作は、その３日前にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、極めてクリアな名録音。録音家本人から直接譲られたオリジナル・マスターからダイレクトにCD化された銘品で、大元マスターだからこそダビング痕のない美麗サウンド。ホール鳴りも吸い込んでいるのでサウンドボードと間違えるタイプでもないのですが、だからと言って遠さも感じさせない。透き通る空気感を力強い芯が貫き、美麗な鳴りがクリスタル・クリアな輝きを与えてもいるのです。さらにその輝きを際立たせているのが、現場ムード。静まり返った会場にはオーディエンス・ノイズが皆無でして、熱狂は曲間になって突然沸騰する大喝采のみ。演奏の機微は極微細なニュアンスさえも鮮明に届く、極上の音世界なのです。
そんなクリア・サウンドで描かれるのは、公式ライヴアルバムでは聴けなかった初来日のフルショウ。公式作は数曲カットされていたのですが、本作は終始一貫の通し録音なのです。ここで比較しながらセットを整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。残念ながら「Shallow Sea」の2:23に一瞬の音欠け、「Metal Fatigue」イントロの頭４小節にカットがあるので厳密な完全形ではないものの、公式映像に未収録だった「Shallow Sea」や「Letters Of Marque」冒頭部分、「Up Country」はばっちり。ショウの全景がしっかりと楽しめるのです。また、その演奏も伝説の名に相応しい。ホールズワースのソロキャリアでも最もロック寄りなスタイルで、後の落ち着いた流暢な美技とは趣が違い、ワイルド＆タフに弾き倒すのです。
オフィシャル映像でも味わえなかった初来日の全景と、現場の薫り。それを極上の大元マスターから復刻したライヴアルバムです。伝説を現場体験できる日本洋楽史の文化遺産。どうぞ、この機会にじっくりとご堪能ください。
