Ace Frehley in 1995 had a long relationship with Peter Criss on a solo tour prior to the reunion of KISS. Introducing a super close-up video that allows you to experience the scene in the best possible way.
This work was shot at “July 29, 1995 San Diego Performance”. That transcendental audience shot … maybe. The biggest point of this work is the strange quality that is so far away from the audience that it becomes unreliable, but first of all, the position of the show. Speaking of 1995, it was also the year when “KISS UNPLUGGED”, which was a major turning point for them, was realized, so let’s look back on the schedule at that time.

This is Ace Frehley in 1995. It seems to be lively when arranged in this way, but if you look closely, the main activity is a few performances a month. Only “North America # 4” and “North America # 7” were so-called “tours” that repeated stages and movements every night. Among them, the San Diego performance of this work is the former. It was the 18th performance of “North America # 4”, which was about 11 days before the fateful “KISS UNPLUGGED”.
This work recorded at such a show is a transcendental shot that makes you wonder, “This is the audience … isn’t it?” What is amazing is that position. Apparently, the site seems to be a small club, but it’s completely in the front row. It feels like you’re looking into the ace from the left side, and it’s so close that you can see the back of the monitor amp without hiding it. The audience is not reflected at all until I look back between the songs, and if there is no reaction from the MC between the songs, it is a studio rehearsal, and it is a monopoly image of “only the band and myself”.
This is just a guess, but I think it is a shot taken by the staff for feed. Richie Scarlet, who plays the guitar with Ace, comes to the camera to appeal when she solos, and she also gives a high five to Ace. Speaking of the mid 90’s, not everyone shoots like it does now, and if you find Axl Rose, you’ll be beaten. It’s a distance that you can hit if you reach out, and you’re so familiar with the members that you can’t think of them as just fans.

These are three songs that will be co-starred with Peter Criss. As soon as Ace called his name, the temperature in the narrow club rose by about 5 degrees and Peter appeared. However, Peter is in charge of vocals, not drums. He mainly sings “Strange Ways” with a tambourine in one hand, and plays the side chorus of “Nothin’To Lose” and “Rock and Roll All Nite”. Perhaps everyone is drunk, but they hug and entangle with each member while fluttering on the stage, enjoying the big chorus of “Rock and Roll All Nite!” With the audience. Another interesting song is “Breakout”. Here, Ace starts with the words “For Eric Carr!” And Ritchie sings.

そんな本作が撮影されたのは「1995年７月29日サンディエゴ公演」。その超絶級オーディエンス・ショットです……たぶん。本作最大のポイントは、思わず頼りなくなってしまうほどオーディエンス離れした異様なるクオリティにあるのですが、まずは何よりショウのポジション。1995年と言えば、彼らの一大転機となった『KISS UNPLUGGED』が実現した年でもありますので、それも交えて当時のスケジュールから振り返ってみましょう。

これが1995年のエース・フレーリー。こうして並べると活発なようですが、よく見るとひと月に数公演の気ままな活動がメイン。毎晩ステージと移動を繰り返す、いわゆる“ツアー”なのは「北米#4」と「北米#7」だけでした。その中で本作のサンディエゴ公演は、前者。運命の『KISS UNPLUGGED』まであと11日と迫っていた「北米#4」の18公演目にあたるステージでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は「これ、オーディエンス……だよね？」と迷ってしまう超絶ショット。なにが凄いと言って、そのポジション。どうやら現場は狭いクラブのようですが、完全に最前列……と言いますか、半分ステージに上がっているような密着感。やや左側からエースを覗き込むような感じでして、隠すそぶりもなくモニター・アンプの裏側まで見えてしまうほどド密着。曲間でわざわざ振り返るまで観客の姿も一切映り込まず、曲間MCの反応がなかったらスタジオ・リハーサルかと思うほど「バンドと自分だけ」という独り占め映像なのです。
これはあくまで推測ですが、スタッフが飼料用に撮影した関係者ショットなのではないでしょうか。エースと共にギターを弾いているリッチー・スカーレットはソロになるとカメラにわざわざ寄ってきてアピールしてきますし、エースともハイタッチしている。90年代半ばと言えば、現在のように誰も彼もが撮影するわけではなく、アクセル・ローズに見つかればブン殴られるような時代。手を伸ばせば殴れる距離ですし、ただのファンとは思えないほどメンバーと慣れ親しんでいるのです。
ともあれ、そんな独り占めショットで描かれるのは、幅広いキャリアを網羅したフルショウ。ここでその内容も整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。一部をメドレーに圧縮してまで披露される名曲群の雨あられ。特に注目なのが中盤。ピーター・クリスとの共演となる３曲です。エースが彼の名をコールするや狭いクラブの気温が一気に５度くらい上昇してピーターが登場。ただ、ピーターの担当はドラムではなくヴォーカル。タンバリン片手に「Strange Ways」をメインで歌い、「Nothin’ To Lose」「Rock and Roll All Nite」のサイド・コーラスを担う。恐らく全員が酔っぱらっているのでしょうが、ステージ上をフラフラとしながら各メンバーとハグし、絡み、観客達と「Rock and Roll All Nite！」の大合唱を楽しんでいるのです。また、もう１曲面白いのが「Breakout」。ここではエースが「エリック・カーのために！」の一言でスタートし、リッチーが歌っています。
とにかく、アットホームなムードと密室感を胸いっぱいに味わえる目の前ショットです。コンサートの観客と言うより、エースの友達になってクラブ・パーディに参加できる。羨ましさしかない体験をおすそ分けしてもらえる秘匿の１枚。どうぞ、思う存分お楽しみください。
