アルバム「BEHIND THE SUN」は84年春に一旦レコーディングが完了したものの、ワーナー・ブラザーズからそのクオリティの低さを指摘され、追加レコーディングを命じられるなど、すったもんだの末に完成したアルバムでした。クラプトン自身も納得し、ようやく完成させた新作。このアルバムのプロモーションのために一年を費やしたと言っていいでしょう。それほどの自信作だったわけです。ヨーロッパ全土をカバーした上に、北米においては二度も訪れています。しかもレグを分けたことにより、セットリストにも変化をつけていました。既に初春のヨーロッパツアーにてバックバンドのポテンシャルを存分に引き出し、自信を持って臨んだ全米ツアー・ファーストレグ。その終盤に当たったこの日には、既に揺るぎない磐石のパフォーマンスがパックされていました。クラプトンとしては、このツアーこそが新作の楽曲の出来をファンに伝える場と意気込んでいたことでしょう。シャープなスライド・ナンバーを名刺代わりに2曲続けた後は、現在でもその日の調子を占うナンバーとクラプトンが公言するI Shot The Sheriffの後奏も軽やかに決め、いよいよ前半のハイライトと言える当時の新曲オリジナル・ブルースSame Old Bluesが披露されます。この日のクラプトンのルックスは、ベージュのスーツをネイビーのTシャツでドレスダウンという粋なルックスでした。そして使用したギターはブラッキー。ここでのプレイがまた凄まじい！弾き倒し、とはこのことを言うのでしょう。ツアー中の寂しさ、辛さを吐露する歌詞のとおり、切ない心を破裂させんばかりの怒涛のプレイがここで弾けます。この日一番のプレイはここだと断言していいでしょう。ファンの方には必ず観ていただきたいシーンです。そしてスリリングなソロを決めるBlues Power、新作からの自信のナンバーTangled In Loveと She’s Waitingでも流麗なソロを決めます。アルバム「SLOWHAND」からの人気ナンバーWonderful TonightとLay Down Sallyで一旦ステージをクールダウンさせるものの、Badge、Let It Rainでぐいぐい煽り、Cocaineでは再び怒涛のプレイでオーディエンスをノックアウトします。ここからの終盤のプレイも凄いとしか言いようがありません。新作からのヒットシングルForever Manも見事にかっこよく決まっています。そしてLaylaで大団円。いかにこの時のクラプトンが心身ともに充実していたか、いかに自信作「BEHIND THE SUN」を世に問いたかったかが窺い知れる素晴らしいステージです。当時採用していた、楽曲の進行に応じてコンピューター・プログラミングで色と方向を変化させる「ヴァリライト」システムもステージを華やかに煌びやかに演出しています。DVD化が実現していないことが悔やまれる伝説の名映像でしたが、ここに遂に永久保存版で登場です。このクラプトンはかっこいい！そして上手い！クラプトンファンのみならず、ロックファンを自認する方なら一家に一枚の名作です。どうぞこの機会をお見逃しなく。
