Yngwie Malmsteen during the Joe Lynn Turner era, when a powerful chemistry unlike any other era was exploding. Introducing a live album where you can experience the real American performance on-site.
It was “April 14, 1988 Allentown performance” that was imbued with such a work. It is the best audience recording. Until now, most of the audience recordings during the Joe era were from Japan, but this work is a live version of the real American. First, let’s look back at the overall picture of the world tour and confirm the position of the show.

“October 12” TRIAL BY FIRE “released”
This is the whole picture of the famous combination era. The full-scale US tour started in May, but the Allentown performance of this work is the shoulder break-in leg before that. It was the third concert of “North America # 1” which was a mini tour of only 5 performances.
This work recorded at such a show is a famous recording that looks like a picture of the finest. Anyway, the clear air and direct feeling are overwhelming. I don’t know the capacity of “Airport Music Hall”, but the sound I hear is like a club or a rehearsal room. Although it can be understood that the snare is a spatial recording in terms of tone, it does not become a distance, and the core that approaches Guigui is also on and powerful. When I close my eyes, Joe sings enthusiastically, and I feel like I can touch it if I reach out. There are also masterpieces of Japanese recordings, but the feeling of closeness up to this point cannot be expected in the popular performances in Japan.
The close-up sound is drawn with a lively full show where the tour has just begun. The set is also very different from “TRIAL BY FIRE”, so let’s organize it while comparing it.

…… And it looks like this. Of course, the axis is the masterpiece “ODYSSEY”. Eight of the 12 songs are performed on a large scale, and when focusing on the songs, all songs except “Hold On” and “Dreaming (Tell Me)” are shown. The most delicious ones are “Now Is The Time,” “Riot In The Dungeons,” and “Faster Than The Speed Of Light.” These three songs are rare songs limited to the duo tour that have not been performed in the subsequent solo activities of both Yngwie and Joe. Also, the most notable classic is the aggressive masterpiece “Fury”. You can enjoy the Joe version with direct sound, but this is also a rare song that did not play “ODYSSEY Tour” at the end.
And then, the performance of playing such a set is the best again! Yngwie, who is often said to be various after a traffic accident, is in great shape in this work, but Joe is more than that. Anyway, the voice is good. Even in the RAINBOW era, I heard that it was not so good, and I can handle it without difficulty even in the Mark Boals repertoire. What’s more, it’s not just a trace, but it’s a big deal because it makes the flickering and doss work at each end. There is a pop feeling from the voice quality, but there is also a rocky wild feeling more than that.
Although there was a slight cover co-starring after that, Yngwie & Joe ended up with “1 album / 1 tour” for the full-scale tag. However, it can be said that the compatibility is No. 1 in each other’s career, and that is what made me hear the name combination of “David Coverdale & John Sykes” and “Don Dokken & George Lynch”. そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1988年４月14日アレンタウン公演」。その極上オーディエンス録音です。これまでジョー時代のオーディエンス録音というと来日物が多かったわけですが、本作は本場アメリカの実況盤。まずは、ワールドツアー全体像から振り返ってショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが名コンビ時代の全体像。本格的な全米ツアーは５月から始まったわけですが、本作のアレンタウン公演はその前の肩慣らしレッグ。わずか５公演のミニ・ツアーだった「北米#1」の３公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、極上を画に描いたような名録音。とにかくクリアな空気感とダイレクト感が圧倒的。寡聞にして“Airport Music Hall”のキャパシティは分からないのですが、聞こえてくる音はまるでクラブかリハーサルルームのような間近感。スネアの音色的に空間録音だとは分かるものの、それが距離にはならず、グイグイと迫る芯もオンで力強い。目を閉じると熱唱するジョーが目の前に浮かび、手を伸ばせば触れられるんじゃないかと思うほどの間近感なのです。日本録音も傑作が揃っていますが、ここまでの間近感は人気絶頂の来日公演では望めません。
そんな密着サウンドで描かれるのは、ツアーが始まったばかりの溌剌としたフルショウ。セットも『TRIAL BY FIRE』とは大きく異なりますので、比較しながら整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。軸となるのは、もちろん名盤『ODYSSEY』。全12曲中８曲が大盤振る舞いされており、歌物に絞ってみると「Hold On」「Dreaming (Tell Me)」以外の全曲が披露されている。中でも美味しいのは「Now Is The Time」「Riot In The Dungeons」「Faster Than The Speed Of Light」。この３曲は、その後のイングヴェイ／ジョー双方のソロ活動でも演奏されていないコンビ・ツアー限定のレア曲なのです。また、クラシックスで特筆なのはアグレッシヴな名曲「Fury」。ジョー・バージョンをダイレクト・サウンドで楽しめるわけですが、これまた“ODYSSEY Tour”を最後に演奏していないレア曲でもあるのです。
そしてそして、そんなセットを演じるパフォーマンスがまた最高！ 交通事故後は色々と言われがちなイングヴェイも本作では絶好調ですが、それ以上なのがジョー。とにかく声が良く出ている。RAINBOW時代でもそうそうない好調ぶりを聴かせ、マーク・ボールズのレパートリーでも難なくこなす。しかも、単にギリギリでなぞっているのではなく、端々でチラチラとドスを効かせるから大したもの。声質からポップ感もあるわけですが、それ以上にロックなワイルド感も宿っているのです。
その後もわずかなカバー共演はありましたが、本格的なタッグは「アルバム１枚／ツアー１回」で終わってしまったイングヴェイ＆ジョー。しかし、その相性の良さは互いのキャリアでもNo.1とも言え、それこそ「デヴィッド・カヴァデール＆ジョン・サイクス」や「ドン・ドッケン＆ジョージ・リンチ」ばりの名コンビぶりを聴かせてくれました。本作は、そんな奇跡のツアーを本場で味わえる１枚。どうぞ、存分にお楽しみください!!
