“November 9” THE LAST COMMAND “released”

This is the history since the release of the shocking debut work “W.A.S.P.”. The tour started in England for the first time and advanced to continental Europe. It was a flow of snow falling into the legendary first visit to Japan. From this tour, the super masterpiece press DVD “LIVE AT THE LYCEUM, LONDON”, which is a reproduction of the official video, reigns as a big standard, but the performance of this work in Frankfurt will be four days later. It was the first day of the “Europe” leg, and it was about three weeks before the landing in Japan.
This work, which was recorded at the site in Germany for the first time, is an audience recording with a realistic atmosphere at the site. Unfortunately, unlike ACCEPT, it is not as good as the press class, and the hall sound is thick, but the core that cuts through the center is very powerful. The sound of the hall does not give a sense of distance, but rather gives a thick dynamism to the performance and approaches with a squeak. The site was a theater with a capacity of about 1,400 people, but when you close your eyes, the space is so real that you can see it.
The show drawn with the on-site sound is suitable to be called the live performance version of the debut work. As you can see in the songs below, there is no need to analyze the set. While playing all the songs except “B.A.D.” out of all 10 songs on the album, the villainous set list that the legendary debut EP “Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)” is placed on Todome’s big lath is intense. Of course, even though it is aggressive and tough, the melody is catchy because it has not passed through thrash metal / hardcore, and it has an extremely pop feeling directly from Alice Cooper / KISS. It is wonderful that the audience at the scene, who was hit with tremendous tension, was excited and there was no upcoming voice. The enthusiasm of 1,400 people roasts the stage, but it does not interfere with the thick performance sound.

Although it was wild and tough, it contained dramaticism and was catchy to the last. If you think about it, W.A.S.P. may have been a German favorite sound. It is one that you can witness with real sound on the first night when they met the West German scene. The press DVD “LIVE AT THE LYCEUM, LONDON” was the first introduction at that time, but it is a new excavation on-site experience board that is perfect for those who were beaten up by that masterpiece. そんな本作が記録されたのは「1984年９月28日フランクフルト公演」。そのリアル・オーディエンス録音です。本作は、単なるポッと出のライヴアルバムではありません。現在、世界中の重金属コレクターを震撼させている名録音家「G.Mann」の秘蔵コレクション。このテーパーは1984年の初登場音源を次から次へと公開しており、今週同時リリースされるMOTLEY CRUEの『MONSTERS OF ROCK NUREMBERG 1984（Zodiac 433）』やACCEPTの『MONSTERS OF ROCK 1984（Zodiac 436）』といったプレス・タイトルも、この人物の作品。普段はなかなかプレス化の望めないACCEPTでも永久保存が実現している事からも、そのスゴ腕ぶりが想像いただけるのではないでしょうか。本作は、そんな今話題の達人によるW.A.S.P.篇なのです。
さて、そんな名手が立ち会ったのはW.A.S.P.初の西ドイツ公演でもありました。まずは、当時のスケジュールからショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが衝撃デビュー作『W.A.S.P.』発売以降の歩み。ツアーは初英国からスタートしており、大陸ヨーロッパへと進出。そのまま伝説の初来日へと雪崩れ込む流れでした。このツアーからは公式映像を復刻した超傑作プレスDVD『LIVE AT THE LYCEUM, LONDON』が大定番として君臨しておりますが、本作のフランクフルト公演はその４日後。「欧州」レッグの初日であり、日本上陸の約３週間前というタイミングでもありました。
そんな初ドイツの現場で記録された本作は、現場の空気感もリアルなオーディエンス録音。残念ながらACCEPTとは違ってプレス級には及ばず、ホール鳴りも厚めではあるのですが、そのド真ん中を突っ切る芯は非常に力強い。ホール鳴りも距離感にならず、むしろ演奏にぶ厚いダイナミズムを与え、グイグイと迫ってくるタイプ。現場となったのは約1400人収容の劇場なのですが、目を閉じるとその空間が浮かぶほどにリアルです。
その現場サウンドで描かれるショウは、デビュー作の生演奏版と呼ぶに相応しい。下記の曲目をご覧の通り、セットの分析など必要なし。アルバム全10曲のうち「B.A.D.」以外の全曲を演奏しつつ、トドメの大ラスには伝説デビューEPの「Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)」を配置するという極悪セットリストが強烈。もちろん、アグレッシヴ＆タフではあってもスラッシュ・メタル／ハードコアを通過していないだけにメロディはキャッチーであり、アリス・クーパー／KISS直伝の極度ポップ感覚。それを凄まじいテンションでぶつけられた現場の観客も盛大に盛り上がっていながら、間近声がないのが素晴らしい。沸き立つ1400人の熱気がステージを炙りながらも、極太な演奏音を邪魔しないのです。

ワイルド＆タフでありながらドラマティシズムを内包しつつ、あくまでもキャッチー。思えば、W.A.S.P.はあまりにもドイツ人好みなサウンドだったのかも知れません。そんな彼らと西独シーンが出会った初めての夜にリアル・サウンドで立ち会える１枚です。当時の入門としてはプレスDVD『LIVE AT THE LYCEUM, LONDON』こそが第一ではありますが、あの名作でぶちのめされた方にはピッタリな新発掘の現場体験盤。どうぞ、じっくりとお楽しみください。
