Ozzy Osbourne’s masterpiece “THE ULTIMATE SIN”, which changed from the shadowy British heavy metal to the gorgeous LA metal world. The valuable original version of “Shot In The Dark” is also a delicious US 1st press LP on CD. This is an urgent gift release decision.

[1st press LP found at the end of the search] “I want to listen to masterpieces with the best possible sound”… It could be said that this is the instinct or act of a music fan. Normally, I would buy the latest remastered CD, but when I become an audiophile, I am not satisfied with that alone. Even with the same album, we have found various media such as CDs, LPs, and cassettes, and have pursued the “best sound” by comparing press differences in each country. This work is the highest peak board “THE ULTIMATE SIN” found in such a journey of pursuit.
The identity of this work is the 1st US press LP “OZ 40026” released in 1986. It is one that has been precisely transferred from the mint quality board. Usually, the strongest candidate for the highest peak board is often the “1st press of the home country board”. But it’s not an absolute rule. For some reason, the sound of another country press may be better, and the first CD may be the best. Only this can only be confirmed by hitting the actual item one by one, so searching for the highest peak board can be compared to the quest for the Holy Grail. And in the case of “THE ULTIMATE SIN”, the mania’s conclusion was “US 1st press LP”.

[Groove and dynamism are the highest peak sound] The sound of this work is natural and dynamic. The taste explodes from the intro of the first song “The Ultimate Sin”. It starts with an impressive beat “Dun, dang, dang, dang …”, but in the current remastered CD, only the drums are emphasized at the peak of the hammering sound, and it is hard and metallic. On the other hand, this work is so real that you can feel the vibration of the skin with each stroke. This is not just a matter of tone. The vibe that one sound emits is completely different, and the dynamism created by connecting it is a difference of another dimension level.
And when the band comes in, the difference widens even more. In the current remastered board, each instrument is clear but flat. If I compare it visually, it’s dull like paintings drawn on a slide glass are layered on top of each other. However, in the case of this work, it has an organic three-dimensional effect like an oil painting. The thickness of each sound has unevenness like oil paint, and you can feel that “the band is there” in the flowing ensemble.
I’m especially happy with this sound because it’s “THE ULTIMATE SIN”. “THE ULTIMATE SIN” is a work that became a turning point in Ozzy’s career “from dramatism to groove”, but on the other hand Ron Nevison was also a producer known for making dry sounds. Partly because of that, the image of “sharp but flat” has been held, but that was a misunderstanding. The sound that flows out from this album is dry, but not flat, and the groove is more dynamic. You can fully enjoy the dynamism that “THE ULTIMATE SIN” originally had.

[Long original version “Shot In The Dark”] The sound alone will fill you up, but the last song, “Shot In The Dark,” is even more important. The current CD is “4:16”, but this work is a long “4:25”. I do not know at what stage it became shorter, but this work can enjoy the original version because it is the first press.
Come to think of it, “THE ULTIMATE SIN” was an unfortunate album. Whether because of the quality of the work or because of the memories of that time, Ozzy himself was unpopular despite the hit work, and it has been removed from the remastering business. Even in the 80’s catalog, only “THE ULTIMATE SIN” is the latest and current remastered in 1995. In such a situation, if you want the highest peak sound, there is only analog reproduction. And this work is one that embodies the highest peak.
Recovering the original groove, a long original version of “Shot In The Dark” that can’t be heard on current CDs. Please take this opportunity to experience it.

【探求の先に見いだされた1stプレスLP】
「名作を一番良い音で聴きたい」……これは音楽ファンの本能、あるいは業と言ってもいいかも知れません。普通であれば、最新リマスターCDを買う程度ですが、オーディオ・マニアになるとそれだけでは満足できない。同じアルバムでもCDやLP、カセットなど様々メディアを見つけ出し、各国のプレス違いを比較しては「最高のサウンド」を追い求めてきました。本作は、そんな追及の旅で見いだされた最高峰盤の『THE ULTIMATE SIN』なのです。
そんな本作の正体は、1986年当時にリリースされた米国1stプレスLP『OZ 40026』。そのミント・クオリティ盤から精緻にトランスファーされた１枚なのです。通常、最高峰盤の最有力候補は「母国盤の1stプレス」が多い。しかし、それは絶対の法則ではありません。何らかの事情で別国プレスの方が音が良くなったり、初回CD盤がベストになる事もある。こればかりは１つひとつ現物に当たって確かめていくしかなく、そのために最高峰盤探しは聖杯の探求にも喩えられる。そして、『THE ULTIMATE SIN』のケースでは、マニアの結論が「米国1stプレスLP」だったというわけです。

【グルーヴとダイナミズムがケタ違いの最高峰サウンド】
そんな本作のサウンドは、ナチュラルにしてダイナミック。その旨みは、１曲目「The Ultimate Sin」のイントロから炸裂している。「ダン、ダン、ダン、ダン……」という印象的なビートで始まるわけですが、現行リマスターCDではそのドラムも打音ピークだけ強調され、堅くメタリック。それに対し、本作は一打一打が皮の振動を感じられるほどリアルなのです。これは単なる音色の問題ではありません。１音が発散するヴァイヴがまるで違い、それが連なることで生まれる躍動感は別次元レベルの差になるのです。
そして、そこにバンドが入ってくると違いは更に広がる。現行リマスター盤では各楽器がクッキリしながらも平板。視覚的に喩えますと、スライドガラスに描いた絵を重ねていくように味気ないのです。ところが、本作の場合は油絵のように有機的な立体感。１音１音の厚みが油絵の具のような凹凸があり、流れ出るアンサンブルに「バンドがそこに居る」と感じられるのです。
このサウンドは、『THE ULTIMATE SIN』だから殊更に嬉しい。『THE ULTIMATE SIN』はオジーのキャリアでも「ドラマティシズムからグルーヴへ」の転換点となった作品ですが、その一方でロン・ネヴィソンはドライな音づくりで知られるプロデューサーでもありました。そのせいもあって「シャープだけど平板」というイメージも持たれてきたわけですが、それは誤解だった。本作から流れ出るサウンドはドライではあっても平板ではなく、むしろグルーヴは一層躍動的に感じられる。『THE ULTIMATE SIN』が本来持っていたダイナミズムをたっぷりと味わえるのです。

【長尺なオリジナル版「Shot In The Dark」】
そんなサウンドだけでもお腹いっぱいですが、さらにポイントなのがラストの名曲「Shot In The Dark」。現行CDでは「4:16」となっていますが、本作では長尺の「4:25」なのです。どの段階から短くなったのかは分かりませんが、本作は初回プレスだからこそのオリジナル・バージョンが楽しめるのです。
想えば『THE ULTIMATE SIN』は不遇のアルバムでした。作品の出来のせいか当時の想い出のせいか、ヒット作にも関わらずオジー本人の不評を買い、リマスター事業からも外されてきた。80年代カタログでも『THE ULTIMATE SIN』だけ1995年リマスターが最新・現行です。そんな状況ですから最高峰サウンドを求めるなら、アナログ復刻しかない。そして、本作はその最高峰を体現した１枚なのです。
