1981 was the most active in the short Randy Rhoad era. Introducing a new excavation live album that enriches the on-site collection.
It was “May 4, 1981 Springfield performance” that was imbued with this work. This is a vintage audience recording recorded in the first act of the US tour, which was the first step to conquer the world. This US tour was the biggest leg in the Randy era and is also famous for producing “TRIBUTE”. In addition, there are many records due to the abundant number of performances, and many masterpieces are archived in our shop. This is a good opportunity, so let’s organize the 1981 collection by schedule and confirm the position of this work.

This is Ozzy Osbourne in 1981. The “・” mark is the show released by our shop, and the “*” mark is other than that. The other day, the new excavation live album “BUFFALO 1981 (Shades 1335)” was well received, but the Springfield performance of this work is just before that. It was the 12th performance of the US tour, which was just one week before the main performance of “TRIBUTE” in Cleveland.
This work that recorded such a show is a live album that is also a little maniac. The existence of recording itself has been known for a long time, but this work is the upgrade master. It is a full-length version that also includes “Children Of The Grave” and “Paranoid” that had been cut so far. Of course, not only the length but also the sound is improved. The pitch fluctuates in the early stages as in the conventional version, but it is stable as the show progresses. What’s more, the muffled air feels clear and clear, and a thick core jumps right in front of you. Along with that, the details have also improved dramatically, and Tommy Aldridge’s drumming is clear with each hit up to the bass drum repeated hits. Of course, Ozzy’s vocals are vivid at the one-word level of the lyrics, and Randy’s dance is also beautiful. To be honest, I used to feel that the master had “I don’t feel like checking if the performance is different from other performances”, but this work freezes my heart on Randy’s melody and makes me want to explore improvisation deeply. It was the first time I realized that it was actually a great recording.
Moreover, this work further brushes up the original sound of the new excavation. I mentioned earlier that the pitch sways in the early stages, but this is also corrected as much as possible. It cannot be said that “the whole story is stable as if nothing happened”, but it is more than enough to enjoy the subtleties of the performance. The more you know the original sound, the more you will feel that it is a different thing.

Until now, the recording that was thought to be at the level of “thank you for listening” was actually a powerful and on-name recording. It is a full-length master who is pleased with the fact itself. It’s not Omoto yet, and there are some maniac points, so I can’t hope for a permanent preservation press, but Omoto must be amazing if it’s just this recording … A new excavation that extends to such a dream. Please take this opportunity to add it to the Randy collection.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1981年５月４日スプリングフィールド公演」。世界制覇の第一歩となった全米ツアーの一幕で記録されたヴィンテージ・オーディエンス録音です。この全米ツアーはランディ時代でも最大レッグであり、『TRIBUTE』を生み出したことでも有名。また、公演数が豊富なだけに記録も多く、当店でも数多くの傑作でアーカイヴ。良い機会ですので、今回は日程で1981年コレクションを整理し、本作のポジションも確かめておきましょう。

これが1981年のオジー・オズボーン。「・」印は当店からリリースされているショウで、「＊」印はそれ以外です。先日は新発掘ライヴアルバム『BUFFALO 1981（Shades 1335）』が好評を博しましたが、本作のスプリングフィールド公演はその１つ前。『TRIBUTE』のメインとなったクリーヴランド公演のちょうど一週間前にあたる全米ツアーの12公演目でした。
そんなショウを記録した本作は、ややマニアックでもあるライヴアルバム。従来から録音の存在自体は知られていましたが、本作はそのアップグレード・マスター。これまではカットされていた「Children Of The Grave」「Paranoid」も収録した全長版なのです。もちろん、長さだけでなくサウンドもアップ。序盤こそ従来盤と同じようにピッチが揺れるものの、ショウが進むほどに安定。しかも、くぐもっていた空気感は比較にならないほどクリアに晴れ渡り、極太な芯がすぐ目の前に飛び込んでくる。それに伴ってディテールも格段に向上しており、トミー・アルドリッジのドラミングもバスドラ連打に至るまで一打一打がクッキリハッキリ。もちろん、オジーのヴォーカルは歌詞の一語レベルで鮮やかですし、ランディの乱舞も美しいのです。正直なところ、従来マスターでは「他公演と違う演奏なのか確かめる気にもならない」という感じでしたが、本作はランディの旋律に心が凍り付き、インプロヴィゼーションを深く探りたくなる。「実は名録音だった」と改めて気づくアップぶりなのです。
しかも、本作は新発掘の原音をさらにブラッシュ・アップ。先ほど「序盤でピッチが揺れる」と申しましたが、これも可能な限り補正。さすがに「何事もなかったように全編ビシッと安定」とまでは言えないのですが、演奏の機微を味わうには十分以上。原音を知る方ほど「まるで別物」と感じていただけることでしょう。

これまでは「聴けるだけありがたい」レベルだと思われていた録音は、実は力強くオンな名録音だった。その事実自体に嬉しくなる全長マスターです。いまだ大元ではなく、ややマニアックなポイントもあるために永久保存プレス化は望めませんが、これだけの録音なら大元はさぞかし凄いに違いない……そんな夢まで広がる新発掘。どうぞ、この機会にランディ・コレクションに加えてください。
