NIGHT RANGER has returned to Japan with a special tour for the 40th anniversary of their debut. An original recording that allows you to experience the latest stage has arrived.
This work is imbued with the performance of “October 23, 2022: Showa Women’s University Hitomi Memorial Hall”. It is an excellent audience recording. They had a live performance at the Hitomi Memorial Hall in 2019 before the new corona pandemic, but this time it will be a large three consecutive performances. This is a vacuum-packed version of such a scene, an original recording with a neat sound and a shining edge. It’s not a sound board-like close-fitting type, but the core that penetrates the air is powerful and the details are clear. Above all, the hall ringing is transparent, and the synths and guitars shine brilliantly. In the first place, the venue called Hitomi Memorial Hall is said to be unsuitable for rock concerts, and is also known as a demonic gate for audience recording. 以上、「人見記念講堂×３日＋大阪」という妙に個性の強い全４公演。本稿が公開される頃には最終の大阪公演が終わった頃であり、本作はその１つ前。まさに最新のライヴアルバムなのです。
そんな現場を真空パックした本作は、端正な鳴りと輝くエッジが美しいオリジナル録音。サウンドボード的なド密着タイプではないのですが、その空気感を貫く芯が力強く、ディテールも鮮明。何よりホール鳴りが透き通っており、シンセやギターがキラキラと輝きながら降り注ぐのです。そもそも人見記念講堂という会場はロック・コンサートには不向きと言われ、特にオーディエンス録音の鬼門としても知られている。実のところ、今回のNIGHT RANGERにしても現場を体験した方からは「風呂場で演奏してるのかと思った」との感想も漏れ聞こえていました。ところが、本作から流れ出る出るサウンドは、その悪評が信じられない。確かにエコー感はあるものの、それこそがキャッチーなメロディに艶を宿らせている美録音なのです。
その輝きのサウンドで描かれるのは、東京３日間でもベストの呼び声高いフルショウ。前述のようにまだ最終の大阪公演が伝わっていないので、ここでは前２日間との比較でセットを整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。新作『ATBPO』からは「Bring It All Home To Me」に留め、往年の名曲群がてんこ盛り。そんな中で感慨深いのがオジー・オズボーンのカバー「Crazy Train」でしょうか。殊更にレアというわけではありませんが、ブラッド・ギルスの初来日はオジー・バンドのギタリストとしてで、1982年７月のこと。今回の来日公演はNIGHT RANGERの40周年であると同時に、ブラッドの初来日から40周年でもあるのです。
また、セレクトだけでなく曲順もポイント。前２日間は「(You Can Still) Rock In Americaスタート／Sister Christianフィニッシュ」という構成でした。それに対し、３日目の本作は「(You Can Still) Rock In America」でフィナーレを迎えるのです。バラードでしっとりと終わるのも悪くはないですが、やはりハードに盛り上がる方がロック・ライヴらしいハイライト。この醍醐味もあって「３日目がベスト」と言われるようです。
