ZEP Glory 1971 begins with a small venue tour called Return to the Club. It was a so-called “club tour” tour that they went to the LA Forum and Madison Square Garden with their popularity exploding and they went back to the starting point and thanked the fans in their home country.
The release of this Milan performance shows that European sound sources are rare from May to July, but the sound sources are scarce for this club tour as well. Perhaps it was a disaster that the place of the live was not a big venue.
Fortunately, however, there is an audience recording for Belfast on the first day of the tour. In addition, the first day of the tour is also a very historic day, with the debut of the songs recorded in the historical masterpiece “IV”, and the live premiere of the immortal masterpiece “Stairway to Heaven”.
It was an extremely important day, so many items appeared in the 21st century. However, in order to make up for the frequent cuts, the live (= ip switch) sound source at a completely different time was forcibly supplemented even in the same 71 years, while the pitch deviation was left unattended, and the end was the “stairway to heaven”. In addition to the cut in, a number of items that make enthusiasts cry have appeared beyond the preciousness of the sound source, such as the generation of strange sounds due to the deterioration of the tape. Even so, what attracted a lot of attention was that I was able to hear the premiere of “Stairway to Heaven”.
In addition to the problem of frequent cuts, there is also the problem that the sound is distorted and hard to hear after “Moby Dick” (also recorded from the middle). Still, the fact that it is a sound source worth listening to is not limited to the premiere of “Stairway to Heaven.” “Black Dog”, which was recorded in a few intact states with this sound source and also premiered live, is just intense.
Surprisingly, Plant is singing completely with the melody of the “IV” album version, that is, with the scream fully open. The song was loved by enthusiasts as the only year in which the song was sung with a high melody line, but it is really rare to sing it with the same melody as the album so far. In addition to the live premiere, I think it was the first live of the year. When I hear the spectacular plant scream here, even those 928s and 929s seem to be singing with a slight restraint.
For the above reason, there are many parts that are difficult to hear due to distortion after “Whole Lotta Love”, but even so, the strong scream of the plant is clearly transmitted. In the live premiere of “Rock And Roll,” which was sung in that atmosphere, Plant sang at a high pitch as a matter of course.
Fortunately, a master cassette was discovered in recent years for this historic but difficult audience recording. The frequency of cuts did not change this time, but it became much easier to hear, as the editing of another sound source with no clutter like the items of the past, and the strange sound like a whistle due to tape deterioration were wiped out. It was. It’s still a maniac level, but be sure to give this gift a try out the shocking plant full-blown scream and the historic live premiere of the songs from “IV”!
ZEP栄光の1971年はリターン・トゥ・ザ・クラブと名打たれた小会場ツアーからスタートしています。人気が爆発して既にLAフォーラムやマディソン・スクエア・ガーデンにまで上り詰めた彼らが原点回帰と母国のファンへの感謝を込めて行った、所謂「クラブ廻り」ツアーでした。
5月から7月にかけてのヨーロッパの音源が希少であることは今回のミラノ公演のリリースが物語っていますが、このクラブ・ツアーに関しても音源が乏しい。ライブの場所が大会場でないということが災いしたのでしょう。
しかし幸いなことに、ツアー初日のベルファストに関してはオーディエンス録音が存在しています。おまけにツアー初日ということは、これが歴史的名盤「IV」収録曲の初披露、中でも不朽の名曲「天国への階段」のライブ初演という非常に歴史的な一日でもある。
極めて重要な一日ですので、21世紀を迎えるといくつものアイテムが登場したもの。ところが、それらは頻発するカットを補うべく同じ71年でも全然違う時期のライブ（＝イプスイッチ）音源が強引に補填された一方でピッチの狂いは放置プレイ、とどめは目玉の「天国への階段」でのカットに加えてテープの劣化による奇妙な音の発生という、音源の貴重さを通り越してマニア泣かせなアイテムがいくつも登場してしまいました。それでも話題を呼んだのは、一重に「天国への階段」初演が聞けたということに他なりません。
カットが頻発するという問題以外にも、「Moby Dick」（これも途中からの録音）以降になると音が歪んで聞き辛くなるという問題も挙げられます。それでもなお一聴の価値がある音源であるという点に関しては、「天国への階段」初演だけに留まりません。この音源で数少ない無傷な状態での収録かつ、これまたライブ初演となった「Black Dog」がとにかく強烈。
驚いたことに、プラントが完全に「IV」アルバムバージョンのメロディ、つまりスクリーム全開で歌っているということ。71年は同曲が高いメロディラインで歌われた唯一の年としてマニアに愛されていますが、ここまでアルバムと同じメロディで歌い上げてみせているのが本当に珍しい。これもライブ初演ということに加え、この年最初のライブであったということが大きいのでは。ここでの壮絶なプラントのスクリームを聞いてしまうと、あの928や929ですら抑え気味に歌っているかのように映ってしまうほど。
先の理由から「Whole Lotta Love」以降は歪みが生じて聞き辛い箇所も多いのですが、それでもプラントのスクリームが強烈な様はしっかりと伝わってきます。その雰囲気の中で歌われた、これまたライブ初演の「Rock And Roll」でもプラントは当たり前のようにハイピッチで歌い上げている。
この歴史的だが難ありなオーディエンス録音は幸いにも近年になってマスターカセットが発掘。カットの頻発は今回も変わりませんでしたが、往年のアイテムのような雑で脈略のない別音源編集、さらにはテープ劣化による笛のような奇妙な音も払拭され、格段に聞きやすくなりました。それでもまだマニア向けなレベルであることに変わりはありませんが、衝撃的ですらあるプラントの全開スクリームと「IV」収録曲の歴史的なライブ初演というドキュメントを是非このギフトにてお試しください！
