Last week, ZEP released Atlanta, the first appearance sound source that marked the first day of the tour centered around the American festival from July to August 1969, but this time also a new version of the standard sound source is released from the same tour. It is common knowledge for enthusiasts that this time is a time when high-tension masterpieces and famous sound sources were mass-produced, probably because one performance time is short on the stage for festivals. Not only Atlanta but also Central Park in Newport had great performances, and it was very easy to hear as a 1969 audience recording. Furthermore, it was a blessed time that there was even a stereo sound board recording of the Texas Pop Festival on the last day of the tour, which was even one of the representative sound sources of 1969.
Meanwhile, another famous sound source that continues to be supported by enthusiasts is the Mid West Rock Festival on July 25th. It is a famous sound source of 1969 that became popular at a stretch from the beginning of the CD era because it was a sound source that was heard only by acetate boot in the analog era. Due to its recording quality, several items have been released, including the nostalgic “STATE FAIR”, but it has gained the support of enthusiasts as “MID WEST ROCK FESTIVAL” released by GRAF ZEPPELIN more than 10 years ago. ..

There will be no more uppercuts than the GRAF board (hereinafter referred to as the “already-released board”) … Actually, the existing board has built a long-term administration for more than 10 years as the definitive edition of the day. This year, an upper version has been released that includes parts that everyone would have missed. The sound source this time is the first generation copy that was copied from the master reel to the reel. Since the same analog copy is a version that does not go through a cassette, the deterioration caused by dubbing is minimized. However, the difference in sound quality from the existing version is not large, and there is no doubt that a fairly low-gene version was used there as well.
However, in “I Can’t Quit You Baby”, the already-released version has stronger hiss, and in “White Summer”, the hiss of this version is stronger. However, the scene where the plant asks for clapping at the beginning of “How Many More Times”, the transfer-like sound that sounds faintly from the left channel in the middle of 10 minutes, and the cut that occurs in the 12 minutes range are the same as before.
However, this “How Many More Times” hides the last move that was lacking in conventional items. When the song starts with Bonzo’s drums, it tells us that Plant is the last song. This scene was lacking in past items, wasn’t it? This time, this scene is completely recorded, and the line “say good night” of the plant is completely heard. It is presumed that this was the place where the tape was changed, and the MC of the plant was scraped while it was branched and dubbed. In the past items, there was a version that did not include this scene at all, and even in the existing board, “say” was missing and it started from “good night” (laugh). It’s certainly a small detail, but it’s true that this is the longest recording ever.

And on this day, the sound quality is excellent. Although it is monaural, it is very clear and the freshness is so great that you can’t think it was recorded 50 years ago. Compared to the audience of the same period, the freshness is probably better than Newport and Central Park.
The performance is a part of the festival, so the performance is short overall, and “You Shook Me” is not played, and even at this time when there are many basic short stages, the shortest is 53 minutes. Therefore, it is easy to hear with a single CD, and it is attractive that the charm of 1969 ZEP is condensed. Among them, “How Many More Times” is an example of a masterpiece performance. Since “Dazed And Confused” was performed in a shorter development than usual, I get the impression that it is playing densely here. In particular, the explosive development in the 5 minute range is a masterpiece, and after the cut in the 12 minute range, even “Lemon Song” appears.
The Mid West Rock Festival has been well-established for both performance and sound quality, but the “last move” that was lacking until then has finally been filled. The definitive edition of the famous sound source that boasts the highest freshness among the many 1969 ZEP audiences is finally here!

先週はZEP1969年7月から8月にかけてのアメリカ・フェス回りを中心としたツアーの初日を飾った初登場音源アトランタをリリースいたしましたが、今回も同じツアーから定番音源のニューバージョンがリリース。フェス用のステージで一回の演奏時間が短いということもあってか、この時期はハイテンションな名演と名音源が量産された時期であることはマニアなら常識。先のアトランタはもちろん、ニューポートにセントラル・パークも素晴らしい演奏内容だった上、1969年のオーディエンス録音としては非常に聞きやすいクオリティの高さを誇っていました。さらには69年を代表する音源の一つですらあったツアー最終日テキサス・ポップ・フェスティバルのステレオ・サウンドボード録音まで存在するという恵まれた時期。
そんな中にあってマニアに支持され続けるもう一つの名音源が7月25日のミッド・ウエスト・ロック・フェスティバル。アナログ時代にはアセテート・ブートでしか聞かれなかった音源ということでCD時代に入ってから一気に普及した69年の名音源でしょう。その録音クオリティゆえ懐かしの「STATE FAIR」を始めとしていくつかのアイテムがリリースされてきましたが、10年以上前にGRAF ZEPPELINからリリースされた「MIDWEST ROCK FESTIVAL」としてマニアの支持を集めてきました。

もはやGRAF盤（以下“既発盤”と称します）以上のアッパーは起こりえないだろう…実際に既発盤はこの日の決定版として10年以上に渡る長期政権を築いてきた訳ですが、今年に入って誰もが見逃していたであろう個所まで収録したアッパー版が登場したのです。今回の音源はマスターのリールからリールへとコピーされたファースト・ジェネレーション・コピーという触れ込み。同じアナログ・コピーでもカセットを介さないバージョンですのでダビングによって生じる劣化は最小限にとどめられている。とはいえ既発盤との音質の差は大きくなく、そこでもかなりロージェネなバージョンが使われていたことは間違いありません。
ただし「I Can’t Quit You Baby」では既発盤の方がヒスが強く、逆に「White Summer」では今回のバージョンのヒスが強いなど、やはりダビング経由の違いを伺わせてくれます。もっとも「How Many More Times」序盤でプラントが手拍子を求める場面、10分半ばで左チャンネルからかすかに鳴る転写っぽい音、そして12分台で起きるカットなどは従来と変わりません。
ところが、この「How Many More Times」にこそ従来のアイテムで欠けていた最後の一手が隠されていたのです。同曲がボンゾのドラムから始まる際、プラントが最後の曲であることを告げます。この場面が過去のアイテムでは大なり小なり欠けていたのですね。今回はこの場面が完全に収録されていてプラントの「say goodnight」というセリフが完全に聞かれます。ここがテープチェンジに当たった個所だと推測され、それが枝分かれダビングされる内にプラントのMCが削られていったのでしょう。過去のアイテムではこの場面がまったく入っていないバージョンがありましたし、既発盤においても「say」が欠けて「goodnight」から始まっていたのです（笑）。確かに細かい個所ではありますが、これで過去最長収録となったのは事実。

そしてこの日はまず音質が抜群にイイ。モノラルながら非常にクリアーで50年前の録音とは思えないほどの鮮度も凄い。同時期のオーディエンスと比べてみてもニューポートやセントラル・パークよりも秀でているのが鮮度でしょう。
演奏の方はフェスの一枠ということで全体的に演奏が短い上に「You Shook Me」は演奏されず、基本短めなステージが多いこの時期においても最短の53分というもの。それゆえにCD一枚でサクッと聞きやすく、なおかつ69年のZEPらしい魅力が凝縮されているのが魅力。そんな中でも圧巻な演奏となっているのが例の「How Many More Times」。「Dazed And Confused」がいつもより短めの展開で披露されていた分、こちらで濃密な演奏を繰り広げている印象を受けます。特に5分台での爆発するような展開は圧巻ですし、例の12分台のカットの後で「Lemon Song」まで登場。
これまでも演奏と音質の両方で定評を得てきたミッド・ウエスト・ロック・フェスティバルですが、それまでことごとく欠けていた「最後の一手」が遂に埋まりました。数ある69年ZEPオーディエンスの中でも最高の鮮度を誇る名音源の決定版が遂に登場です！
