The unexplored region “Somewhere on Tour” where the official live album was not left, even though it was the heyday of the hero IRON MAIDEN. The name recording that has conveyed the scene is an upgrade. Here is a dignified appearance.
“Battle Creek performance on March 15, 1987” is engraved in this work. It is the masterpiece audience recording. Speaking of 80’s Maiden live, the traditional official works “Live After Death” and “Maiden England” reign on the immovable throne, but the more wonderful the two, the more “Somewhere on Tour” in between. “I’m also worried. First, let’s look back at the panoramic view of such a “famous but unexplored” world tour and confirm the position of the show.

This is IRON MAIDEN in 1986/1987. Roughly speaking, the circuit was divided into two parts, “1986 = Europe” when the album was released and “1987 = North America / Japan” at the beginning of the year. Of course, the main battlefield was North America, which was aspiring to conquer at that time. The Battle Creek performance of this work was the 47th concert of such a US tour.
This work recorded at such a show is so wonderful that even enthusiasts can get rid of the tricks like “Is there such a great recording?” I think the Battle Creek performance will be the first experience for many collectors, but it was actually a show known as the “mid-level” among core enthusiasts. There are two types of recordings, and the one with the best sound was evaluated as “not the top of the tour, but one of the best”. This work is a digitalization of the Low Gene Master, which was such a “good sounder”, with the latest technology.
The sound is overwhelming. It’s not impossible to compare it with the old master, but it may be better to compare it with the tour masterpiece. Speaking of 1987, “CAUGHT SOMEWHERE IN MILWAUKEE (Zodiac 104)” and “CAUGHT SOMEWHERE IN CHICAGO (Zodiac 105)”, which are familiar in our shop, reign over the throne, but this work is comparable to those two works. …… No, it could surpass. More specifically, the straightness of the core is not as good as the FM-like “CAUGHT SOMEWHERE IN CHICAGO”, but the vivid resolution to the finest parts and the beauty of the fresh master freshness are superior to this work. (Oh, if you could hear “Alexander the Great” with this sound !!).
The full show drawn with such beautiful sounds is a masterpiece rush because it is “Somewhere on Tour”. The set of this tour changed slightly depending on the time of year, so let’s reorganize it here.

… And it looks like this. Basically, it reminds me of the final leg’s performance in Japan, and the precious “SOMEWHERE IN TIME” number is delicious. After this, “Wasted Years” and “Heaven Can Wait”, which will be performed for several years, will give you a feeling of fresh momentum because of the new song period, and the rare Adrian number “Stranger In A Strange Land” is also delicious. And above all, “Caught Somewhere In Time”! Although it was a big song of about 7 minutes, it was a masterpiece among the masterpieces that rushed fast at the same time. At all, it’s okay to have a single B-side, so I’m trying to put out an official live take … and so on, a wonderful performance that revives in my mind until the grudges over 35 years come out from the speaker.

From the perspective of “rare songs”, “BELGRADE 1986 (Shades 1228)”, where you can listen to “The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner” and “Sea Of Madness”, is the ultimate. There is no more “Somewhere on Tour” live album on the planet. However, from the viewpoint of “sound”, it is a group male division. そんな本作に刻まれているのは「1987年３月15日バトル・クリーク公演」。その傑作オーディエンス録音です。80年代メイデンのライヴと言えば、伝統の公式作『死霊復活』『メイデン・イングランド』が不動の王座に君臨しているわけですが、その２つが素晴らしければ素晴らしいほど、合間の“Somewhere on Tour”も気になるもの。まずは、そんな「有名なのに秘境」なワールド・ツアーの全景を振り返ってショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが1986年／1987年のIRON MAIDEN。ざっくり言いますと、アルバムが発売された「1986年＝ヨーロッパ」、年の明けた「1987年＝北米／日本」と世界を二分してサーキットしていました。もちろん、主戦場だったのは当時征服を志していた北米。本作のバトル・クリーク公演は、そんな全米ツアー47公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、マニアなほど「こんな凄い録音あったっけ？」とド技も抜かれる素晴らしさ。多くのコレクター諸兄にとってバトル・クリーク公演は初体験になると思いますが、実のところコア・マニアの間では「中堅所」として知られるショウでもありました。２種類の録音が存在しており、その音の良い方は「ツアー頂点ではないけど、屈指」との評価を受けていました。本作は、そんな「音の良い方」だったロウジェネ・マスターを最新技術でデジタル化し直したものなのです。
そのサウンドは圧倒的。旧来マスターとの比較も不可能ではでありませんが、むしろツアー代表作と比べた方が良いかもしれません。1987年と言えば、当店でもお馴染み『CAUGHT SOMEWHERE IN MILWAUKEE（Zodiac 104）』『CAUGHT SOMEWHERE IN CHICAGO（Zodiac 105）』が王座に君臨している分けですが、本作はその２作に匹敵する……いや、凌駕しかねないのです。もっと詳しく言いますと、芯の直球感はFMっぽい『CAUGHT SOMEWHERE IN CHICAGO』に及ばないものの、微細部まで鮮やかな解像度や瑞々しいマスター鮮度の美しさは本作の方が上回っているくらいなのです（あぁ、このサウンドで「Alexander the Great」が聴けたならッ!!）。
そんな美音で描かれるフルショウは、“Somewhere on Tour”だからこその名曲ラッシュ。このツアーが時期によってセットが微妙に変化してもいましたので、ここで改めて整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。基本的には最終レッグの来日公演を思わせるもので、貴重な『SOMEWHERE IN TIME』ナンバーが美味しい。この後、数年演奏される「Wasted Years」「Heaven Can Wait」も新曲時期だからこそのフレッシュな勢いを感じさせますし、レアなエイドリアン・ナンバー「Stranger In A Strange Land」も美味しい。そして何より、「Caught Somewhere In Time」！　約７分の大曲でありつつ、同時にファストに疾駆する名曲中の名曲。まったく、シングルＢ面でもいいから公式ライヴテイクを出しやがれってんだ……などと、思わず35年越しの恨み節まで脳裏に甦る素晴らしい演奏がスピーカーから吹き出してくるのです。
