A total of 6 performances. In Tokyo, a total of 3 performances of “Nakano 2 times + Shibuya 1 time” were realized, and this work was the second concert. I think some people have already come to the pin, but this show has already been introduced as “LORD OF WAR (Shades 207)”. However, this work is completely different from that masterpiece. It is neither another generation nor another mastering, but a completely different recording provided by a completely unrelated person.
And its quality surpasses “LORD OF WAR”. No, “LORD OF WAR” itself is also a masterpiece, and although it was one of the representatives of the visit to Japan in 1989, this work goes further than that. What is wonderful is the on and powerful core. “LORD OF WAR” is not inferior to this work in terms of clarity and vividness, but the closeness of the powerful but beautifully separated core is overwhelming. Moreover, it doesn’t explode or become a lump, and each instrument is neatly separated and approaches in front of you. I wouldn’t mistake it for a sound board because of the real enthusiasm before the performance, but when the performance started, everything was overwhelmed by a strong core, and I thought, “Oh, was this an AM broadcast?”

The set based on the official HR trilogy “RUN FOR COVER”, “WILD FRONTIER” and “AFTER THE WAR” is more melodic than “WE WANT MOORE!”, and is song-oriented. It is a full show that will be the culmination.
Gary, who turned to the blues route after this, became distant from Japan, and the next time he came to Japan was in 2010, just before his death. Japan couldn’t accept his blues because he loved “Gary’s HR” too much. That is why the performance in Japan in 1989, which was a unique Irish HR style, is too special. A new excavation master that revives such a scene with powerful sound. It is the birth of a new masterpiece that you want to chew carefully.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1989年５月12日：中野サンプラザ公演」。その絶品オーディエンス録音です。1989年来日と言えば、“ハードロッキン・ゲイリー”の総決算。当店では数々の名作でアーカイヴしてきました。まずは、当時のスケジュールを振り返ってコレクションを整理してみましょう。

以上、全６公演。東京では「中野２回＋渋谷１回」の合計３公演が実現し、本作はその２公演目にあたるコンサートでした。もうピンと来ている方もいらっしゃると思いますが、このショウはすでに『LORD OF WAR（Shades 207）』としてもご紹介済み。しかし、本作はあの傑作とはまったくの別物。別ジェネでも別マスタリングでもなく、まったくの無関係の人物が録音し、本人から提供された完全別録音なのです。
そして、そのクオリティは『LORD OF WAR』を超えている。いや『LORD OF WAR』自体も傑作であり、1989年来日を代表する１本ではあったのですが、本作はさらにその上を行っている。何と言っても素晴らしいのは、オンで力強い芯。『LORD OF WAR』もクリアさや鮮やかさでは本作にも負けていませんが、パワフルながらも綺麗にセパレートした芯の間近感は圧倒的。しかも爆音や塊になったりせず、各楽器が綺麗に分かれたままグイグイと目の前に迫る。開演前のリアルな熱狂からサウンドボードと間違えたりはしませんが、演奏が始めると強力な芯に全てが制圧され、「あれ？ これAM放送だったっけ？」と思ってしまうほどです。
そんなオンなド直球サウンドで描かれるのは、ギター・クレイジーが残したハードロックの名曲選。ここでその内容も整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。“AFTER THE WAR Tour”の大定番の言えばベルファスト公演のプロショットですが、本作はそこでも聴けなかった名曲も盛りだくさん。HR公式三部作『RUN FOR COVER』『WILD FRONTIER』『AFTER THE WAR』を軸としたセットは『WE WANT MOORE!』よりもグッとメロディックで、さらにソング・オリエンテッド。まさに集大成となるフルショウなのです。
この後ブルース路線に舵を切ったゲイリーは日本と縁遠くなり、次に来日を果たしたのは死の直前となる2010年でした。「ゲイリーのHR」を愛しすぎた故に、彼のブルースを受け入れられなかった日本。だからこそ、独特のアイリッシュHRの粋であった1989年の来日公演は特別すぎるのです。そんな現場をパワフル・サウンドで甦らせてくれる新発掘マスター。じっくりと噛みしめて頂きたい新名盤の誕生です。
