“Clapton’s visit to Japan is getting closer and closer.” As if to wait for it, the best DAT master for the past three years of Clapton’s annual Royal Albert Hall (RAH) performance has arrived from the heavyweight taper living in the UK! This week will be “Clapton Week”, and we will release this master taper treasured master all at once. This Layla is something I would like you to listen to. I think you will think that there was such a wonderful Layla. It can be said that the value of this work is in the two songs Got To Get Better In A Little While and Layla, but the tension of Clapton’s solo is strong in the following Cocaine and her encore Sunshine of Your Love. It never falls. The solo in the middle of the latter usually starts with a passage from the standard number Blue Moon, but here it starts with an ad-lib phrase that fits perfectly. クラプトンの来日が刻々と近づいてきました。それを待ちかねるかのように、イギリス在住の重鎮テーパーから、クラプトンが行っている恒例のロイヤル・アルバート・ホール（以下RAH）公演の過去3年分の極上DATマスターが到着しました！今週は「クラプトン・ウィーク」と致しまして、この重鎮テーパー秘蔵のマスターを3作一挙にリリース致します。まずは、2004年春に開始された「ミー＆ミスター・ジョンソン・ツアー」から、終盤に当たった5月8日のRAH5日目公演をサウンドボード・レコーディング並みの極上ステレオ・オーディエンス録音で完全収録した本作です。本当にちょっと聴いたところ、サウンドボード録音のような楽音の粒立ちと迫力に驚かれることでしょう。やはり重鎮マスターの実力は只ものではありませんでした。完璧な音質です。そのため当店では何も手を加える必要はありませんでした。
さて、2001年から3年ぶりとなったこのツアーではクラプトンは新たな挑戦とも言える要素を採り入れていました。それは以下でした。①初めてドイル・ブラムホールⅡをセカンドギターに起用したこと。②ハイテンションを要求されるドミノスナンバーGot to Get Better in a Little Whileをドミノス以来34年ぶりにセットインさせたこと。③バックコーラスをそれまでのテッサ・ナイルズ＆ケイティ・キスーンからミシェル・ジョン＆シャロン・ホワイトという、より「黒っぽい」布陣に変えたこと。これらにより、随所に聴きどころが散りばめられた新鮮なステージとなったのです。もちろんセットリストも2001年ツアーからは大幅に変わりました。それではこのツアーがクラプトンのキャリアにおいてどのようなタイミングで行なわれたものだったのか、このコンサート前後のトピックを時系列に見ていきましょう。

JOHNSON」のリリースと合わせて行なわれたツアーだったことがお分かりいただけるでしょう。当然、当該アルバムからの新曲もセットに組まれており（中盤）、クラプトンが全人生を懸けて心酔するロバート・ジョンソンの、レコーディングしたばかりのナンバーをライブでどのようにプレイするのか、そこに注目は集まりました。しかしむしろこのツアーの聴きどころは、他のナンバーにあったと言ってもいいでしょう。78年のアルバム「BACKLESS」からのディラン・ナンバーWalk Out In The Rainを26年ぶりに引っ張り出してきて、レイドバックした演奏を聴かせたかと思えば、I Shot the Sheriffの後奏では物凄いテンションのソロを披露しています。この曲で明らかなように、この日のクラプトンはどうしたことか、尋常ならぬテンションだったのです。中盤のロバジョンコーナーを経ては、何と70年以来34年ぶりに取り上げたドミノス・ナンバー Got To Get Better In A Little Whileで息をも継がせぬ怒涛のプレイを披露します。これがもう只事ではないテンションなのです。中間のファーストソロでも目一杯飛ばしていますが、ドイルに振ったセカンドソロでも途中でグイグイ切り込んできて突っ走っていきます。そして間髪入れずに弾き倒しの Have You Ever Loved A Womanへの流れ。もうこれだけでノックアウトされることは間違いありません。にもかかわらず、終盤にも聴きどころは待っていました。ドイルが初めて加わったLaylaが凄過ぎます！イントロをお聴きください。あの熱いオリジナルバージョンに迫る勢い、迫力 、情熱！ドイルの的確でセンスの良いプレイ！それに煽られたかのように気合を込めたクラプトンの熱唱！そして後奏のソロがまた凄い！珍しく一風変わったフレージングから入るこのソロは途中で火が点き、後は高速で畳みかけるスローハンド奏法が大爆発しています。このLaylaは是非聴いていただきたいものです。こんな凄いLaylaってあったんだ、と思われると思います。本作の価値はGot To Get Better In A Little WhileとLaylaの2曲にあると言ってもいいくらいなのですが、続くCocaineでも、アンコールの Sunshine of Your Loveでも、クラプトンのソロのテンションが落ちることはないのです。後者の中間のソロでは、いつもはスタンダードナンバーBlue Moonの一節を流用して始まるものが、ここでは見事にはまるアドリブフレーズで始めています。後奏でもこれでもか、とばかりに鋭いフレーズを嵐のように畳みかけています。一体どうしちゃったの、クラプトン？と言いたいほどの物凄いステージが最後まで展開されています。さらに初めて加わったドイルのソロも随所で炸裂。Get Better In A Little While、Cocaineでのセカンドソロは強烈です。こうして聴いてくると、クラプトンがドイルをツアーに引き込みたかった理由が分かるような気がします。こんな刺激がほしかったのですね。本作の魅力は、このステージのプレイクオリティにあります。クラプトンが遂に口説き落とした若手ギタリスト、ドイル・ブラムホールⅡのはまり具合が素晴らしい！ソロを任される姿からは、既にクラプトンからの全幅の信頼を得ていたことが分かります。さらに、この年は、クラプトンの親友ビリー・プレストンが躍動する姿を見せてくれた最後のツアーともなりました。この翌々年の2006年にビリーは旅立ちましたが、その年クラプトンは忙しいツアーを抜け、もう意識がなくなっていたビリーを病院に見舞ったといいます。そしてビリーに語りかけながら、丁寧に顔を拭いてやったそうです。そしてすぐにツアーに舞い戻りました。病院に立ち会っていたソウルシンガーのサム・ムーアが語っていました。「ミー＆ミスター・ジョンソン」プロジェクトを共に完遂した大親友と頼もしい後輩に囲まれて、いかにこの時のクラプトンが心身ともに充実していたかが窺い知れる素晴らしいステージと言えるでしょう。2004年ツアー中、ベストと断言できる本作をどうぞご堪能ください。
