The recently released “COMPLETE NAGOYA 1991” by George Harrison & Eric Clapton has been very well received. Looking back on the realization of this Japan tour, all the staff remembered that they had released an important title that might have triggered it. “L.A. FORUM 1990” (Beano), which is a complete recording of the Los Angeles Forum performance on May 1st, in which George jumped in and participated in Clapton’s “Journeyman National Tour” in 1990, with an ultra-high quality stereo audience recording. -022). Released in May 2008, the title was so popular that it sold out early. Therefore, it is no longer available. George Harrison jumped in with the three encore songs of the day. George, who was away from the live, took the trouble to jump into Clapton’s concert! It was a very rare day. Considering that George & Clapton’s tour was carried out in Japan the following year, it is highly possible that the events here were inputting something to Clapton and George’s mind. With that in mind, I realized again that it was a very important record, and I planned to provide this sound source to George & Clapton fans again. Originally it must be an ultra-high sound quality audience recording, but this time, in the master dubbed from the cassette tape of the recorder himself to the DAT, the left-right balance and sound pressure changed due to the change in the direction of the microphone. We have remastered the sound quality by averaging it as much as possible and adjusting it to widen the range to make it easier to hear. Even if you have the previous work, you will notice that the sound image and sound quality are easier to hear and improved when you listen to it.

先般リリース致しましたジョージ・ハリスン＆エリック・クラプトンの「COMPLETE NAGOYA 1991」がお蔭様で大好評をいただいております。このジャパン・ツアーの実現を振り返りました時、そのきっかけとなったかもしれない重要なタイトルをリリースしていたことをスタッフ一同思い出しました。クラプトンが1990年に行なった「ジャーニーマン全米ツアー」中、ジョージが飛び入り参加した5月1日のロスアンジェルス・フォーラム公演を超高音質ステレオ・オーディエンス録音で完全収録した「L.A. FORUM 1990」（Beano-022)です。2008年5月にリリースされたこのタイトルは早期に完売となるほどの人気を博しました。そのため現在では入手不可能になっております。この日のアンコールの３曲でジョージ・ハリスンが飛入りしたのです。ライブから遠ざかっていたジョージがクラプトンのコンサートにわざわざ飛入り！非常に珍しい日だったのです。この翌年、日本でジョージ＆クラプトンのツアーが敢行されたことを思うと、ここでの出来事がクラプトン、そしてジョージの脳裏に何かをインプットしていた可能性が高いとも考えられるわけです。そう考えますと、非常に重要な記録ではなかったかと再認識し、ジョージ＆クラプトンのファンの方々に再度この音源をご提供しようと企画したというわけです。元々が超高音質オーディエンス録音に違いないのですが、今回、録音者本人のカセット・テープからDATへダビングされたマスターではマイクの向きの変化で左右バランスと音圧がコロコロ変わっていましたので、なるべく平均化し、音質はレンジを広げる調整で聴きやすくするというリマスターを施しました。前作をお持ちの方でも、聴いていただくと音像・音質が聴きやすく改善されていることに気づかれるでしょう。

このように、正に額面どおりの、一年がかりのワールド・ツアーに明け暮れた年でした。それくらいアルバムには自信を持っていたようで、アルバム収録曲から6曲を組み込んだセットリストは、ツアーが終了するまで変わることはありませんでした。とにかく徹頭徹尾「弾き捲った」ことを証明したツアーで、クラプトンのキャリアの一つのピークだったと断言できます。この日も例外ではありません。近年のライブでは聴けない「ジャーニーマン」のNo Alibisや人気曲Bad Love、壮大なアレンジのold Loveを始め、昨今とは次元の違うソロを披露したi Shot The Sheriff、アグレッシヴというほかはないWhite Room、緩急織り交ぜた、ダイナミックな構成とパフォーマンスのBefore You Accuse Me、ライブアレンジの完成形を提示したWonderful TonightとLayla、ドラム＆パーカッションソロを挿んだ怒涛のSunshine Of Your Love(中間のソロでは、クラプトンは洒落でスタンダードナンバーBlue Moonのフレーズを弾いています。クリームのオリジナルバージョンのソロもこの曲にインスパイアされたことはご存知でしたか？）など、全曲が聴きものだったと言えます。この時期のクラプトンのインタビューでは、「ますます指が強くなっている気がするんだ。」と語っていましたが、それはBad Loveのソロ一発目のチョーキングで確かめることができるでしょう。クラプトンのキャリアでは最も評価の高いツアーの一つとして揺るぎない地位を誇る「ジャーニーマンツアー」は、固定されたセットリストながらも、ハードロック・ギタリストのようにクラプトンがこれでもかとギターを弾き捲る姿がこのツアーの最大の魅力となっていました。

そして前述のように、何とアンコールの３曲でクラプトンの旧友ジョージ・ハリスンが飛入りしています。この時期のジョージは、５年ぶりとなる87年のアルバム『CLOUD NINE』が大ヒットしシーンに返り咲いたにもかかわらず、その後はツアー嫌いからまったくライブ活動をしていなかった頃でしたので、このハプニングは非常に珍しいことでした。恐らくは世界中にある邸宅のうち、この日はLAに滞在していたのでしょう。そして親友クラプトンのコンサートがあることを知ったジョージが珍しくライブステージに立つ気持ちになったというわけです。クラプトンとともに登場するシーンはオーディエンスの歓声がもの凄く、この部分だけでもぐっときてしまうほどです。ジョージのプレイはライブ慣れしていないにもかかわらず、Instrumental Jamで珍しくスリーコードに則った巧みなプレイを聴かせていますし、Crossroadsではセカンド・ソロの前半でフィーチャーされています(後半はクラプトン・バンドのフィル・パーマーです)。ラスト・ナンバーではジョージのソロはありませんが、イントロでは指慣らしのようなフレーズを弾いています。この３曲では彼の貴重なプレイをしっかり聴き取ることができます。翌年の日本でのツアー実現は、この日の出来事がきっかけになったような気がしてなりません。ジョージとすれば、こんなにオーディエンスが喜んでくれるなら、74年ツアーの時のような酷評をされることはないかもしれないと考えたかもしれませんし、クラプトンとすれば、ほらジョージ、やれるじゃないか、という思いだったかもしれません。完売＝廃盤だったこの公演音源を完璧な内容とクオリティで甦らせた本作は、この日の決定版ということのみならず、このツアーの代表作とも呼べるポジションを獲得したと言えるものです。既発盤をお持ちの方も、初めて注目された方も、両方ご満足いただけるタイトルと断言致します。どうぞこの機会をお見逃しなく。
