Looking at this, you can see that it was a year full of literally world tours. Among them, this day was the last day of the European tour, it was the time when the fat got on with the success of “18 Nights” in London, and it was also the timing when we reached a milestone. Besides that, I Shot The Sheriff’s aftertaste is at a ghastly level, and White Room’s wah wah solo is also crisp. Bad Love’s chalking is amazing! The crying play of Old Love also comes a lot. If you list the highlights like this, you won’t have time to enumerate. Both Cocaine and Layla are amazing. On the “Journeyman Tour”, this level of performance was being developed every day. Also, this day is the birthday of keyboard Alan Clark (Dire Straits), and Happy Birthday will be sung after Cocaine. It is a record of a precious day with such a topic (as an aside, second guitar Phil Palmer was pulled out by Dire Straits after this tour). In the band member introduction that leads to the intro of Cocaine, you can also see Katie Kissoon, who is currently Clapton’s backing chorus, when she was young (young! Cute!). Before the song of Sunshine Of Your Love, the standard number Blue Moon will be played. Phil Palmer, the second guitarist, joined the band in 1989 and was a talented player who was a session man. It seems that the reason why Clapton was scouted was that they met at the album session of British singer-songwriter Paul Brady in 1986 and reunited at the album session of producer and artist John Astley in 1988. Alan Clark, the keyboard, was the person who consulted with Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits, who Clapton has a close relationship with, when Philinganes’ schedule did not match during the 1987 Japan tour. In Dire Straits, he was in contrast with Guy Fletcher, who was in charge of synths, and he did a good job of sharing roles, so even in the Clapton band, the division between Philinganes and Philinganes is wonderful (Phillininganes is piano and synth, Clark is organ main) . Originally, Ray Cooper (former Elton John band), a veteran percussionist in the UK, should have been here, but at this time he injured his thumb and withdrew from the tour. So, usually in the middle of Sunshine Of Your Love, I had a drum & percussion solo battle with Feron, and the audience did a call & response, but in this video, it didn’t come true, and on the contrary, a rare and compact version of Sunshine Of Your Love is supposed to be seen. 【クラプトンの一つのピーク「ジャーニーマン・ツアー」の未公開オーディエンスショット映像が出現！】
エリック・クラプトンの90年の「ジャーニーマン・ツアー」と言えば、中盤にアコースティックセットを設けることなく、徹頭徹尾エレクトリックでギンギンにロックしていたステージで、そこでのクラプトンの弾き捲りぶりは長い彼のキャリアでも一つのピークだったと考えられています。さらにロングヘアにジャンニ・ベルサーチのドレススーツを身に纏ったメガネなしのルックスは非常にかっこいいもので、特に人気の高いツアーでした。過去にはBBCで放映された1月24日の4ピースバンドの有名なプロショット映像を始め、南米ツアーのフルライブ映像など、優れた映像には恵まれたツアーですが、オーディエンスショットが意外に少ない中、突如3月5日のヨーロッパツアー最終日、ドイツのフランクフルト公演の素晴らしい完全収録オーディエンスショット映像が出現しました。これまで完全に未公開だったものです。アングルはステージに向かって左45度くらいの2階スタンドからのもので、前方には一切障害物がない状態で良好に収録されています。クラプトンを二―アップで捉えており、若干ピントは甘いものの、表情まで分かるレベルです。方向的にギターがよく見え、ベストアングルと言えます。三脚でしっかり固定しながら、終始クラプトンを的確に捉えながら。バンドメンバーにもカメラを振ったりと気の利いた工夫もあり、かっこいいクラプトンのステージに観入ってしまいます。しかも音声が素晴らしいステレオ・オーディエンス録音のため、よりこの映像の魅力をアップしています。恐らく別に録音された高音質ソースを完全シンクロしているのだと思われます。Before You Accuse Me以降は別ソースで音像が変わりますが、音質が落ちるわけではありません。むしろよりステレオ感に優れた高音質ソースに替わっています。とにかくこの映像は凄いです。ファンなら観て損はないレベルの映像です。

それでは1990年の「ジャーニーマン・ツアー」の日程を振り返ってみましょう。

これを見ると、文字通りのワールドツアーに明け暮れた年だったことがお分かりいただけるでしょう。その中にあって、この日はヨーロッパツアーの最終日、ロンドンで「18Nights」を成功させて脂が乗ってきた時期であり、一つの節目を迎えたタイミングでもありました。クラプトンの気合が入らないわけがありません。オープニングから飛ばし捲っています。各曲のギターソロはもうギンギンの弾き捲りです。セットリストには当時の最新アルバム「JOURNEYMAN」からのナンバーが6曲も組まれており、あの名盤の楽曲のライブ映えするバージョンを目にすることができます。そのほかにも、I Shot The Sheriffの後奏は鬼気迫るレベルですし、White Roomのワウワウソロもキレッキレです。Bad Loveのチョーキングの凄いこと！Old Loveの泣きのプレイもぐっと来ます。こんな風に観どころを挙げていくと、枚挙に暇がなくなってしまいます。CocaineもLaylaも凄いです。「ジャーニーマン・ツアー」では連日このレベルのパフォーマンスが展開されていたのですね。また、この日はキーボードのアラン・クラーク（ダイアー・ストレイツ）の誕生日に当たっており、Cocaineの後でHappy Birthdayが歌われます。そんなトピックもある貴重な日の記録です（余談ですが、セカンドギターのフィル・パーマーはこのツアーの後、ダイア―・ストレイツに引き抜かれました）。Cocaineのイントロに繋がるバンドメンバー紹介では、現在クラプトンのバックコーラスを務めるケイティ・キスーンの若かりし頃の姿も見ることができます（若い！可愛い！）。Laylaでは、この頃にはまだ止めていなかった煙草をストラトのヘッドに差しているシーンも観ることができます。Sunshine Of Your Loveの曲前には、スタンダードナンバーのBlue Moonが演奏されます。これは実は中間のクラプトンのソロのネタ振りでして、元々クリームのオリジナルバージョンで、クラプトンはBlue Moonの一節を拝借してソロを構成していたという裏話があり、それをここで堂々と証明して見せたというわけです。面白い演出ですが、そのフレーズに囚われ過ぎて収拾がつかなくなりかけてニヤつくクラプトンの姿も面白いです。そんな風に、改めて観ていくといろいろな発見もできる興味深いステージです。
【クラプトンが自ら「世界最高のバンド」と称えた、このツアーのみのサポートミュージシャンたち】
このツアーをここまでクオリティの高いものにしたのは、実力のあるバンドメンバーに負うところが大きかったと言えます。ベースのネイザン・イースト、キーボードのグレッグ・フィリンゲインズ、ドラムのスティーヴ・フェローン、コーラスのテッサ・ナイルズ＆ケイティ・キスーンは86年の「AUGUST」以来の信頼関係にあるメンバーで、クラプトンとの呼吸を知り尽くした人たち。セカンドギターのフィル・パーマーは89年からバンドに加わったセッションマン上がりの実力派のプレイヤーでした。決して「七光り」ではありませんが、キンクスのデイヴィス兄弟の甥に当たる人で、まったくミストーンのない的確で器用なプレイぶりは大いにクラプトンをフォローしていました。クラプトンにスカウトされたきっかけは、86年のイギリスのシンガーソングライター、ポール・ブレイディのアルバムセッションで出会い、88年のプロデューサー兼アーティストのジョン・アストリーのアルバムセッションで再会したことだったようです。キーボードのアラン・クラークは、87年のジャパンツアー時に フィリンゲインズのスケジュールが合わなかった際にクラプトンが親交のあるダイアー・ストレイツのマーク・ノップラーに相談して借り受けた人物でした。ダイアー・ストレイツでもシンセ担当のガイ・フレッチャーとの対比、役割分担をうまくこなしていた彼なので、クラプトンバンドでもフィリンゲインズとのすみ分けは見事です（フィリンゲインズはピアノとシンセ、クラークはオルガンメインです）。本来はここにイギリスでは古参のパーカッショニストであるレイ・クーパー（元エルトン・ジョン・バンド）がいたはずなのですが、この時期には親指を傷めてしまい、ツアーから離脱していました。ですので、いつもならSunshine Of Your Loveの中盤でフェローンとドラム＆パーカッションソロバトルを繰り広げ、オーディエンスともコール＆レスポンスをやってくれたところですが、この映像ではそれは叶わず、逆にレアでコンパクトなバージョンのSunshine Of Your Loveが観られることになっています。改めて「世界最高のバンド」をこの映像でご確認ください。
