By chance, mistakes and mistakes … A valuable version of “Help!” Created by combining various factors. ] And “Rubber Soul”. The masterpiece set of “Original Stereo MIX & Non-Remaster” will be released as a gift. The identity of this work is the official CD “Help!” In the 1980s, which is out of print. ] “Rubber Soul”. However, it is a “1989 Canadian CD” C2 46439 “” C2 46440 “” that sets it apart from other national editions. How is this Canadian edition different from other national editions and current editions? To explain that, let’s first move the hands of the clock back to 1987. Speaking of 1987, the time when the Beatles were made into CDs. However, not all albums were released on CD at the same time, “Help! “Rubber Soul” was the second release together with “Revolver”. Initially, it was planned to make a CD with a monaural version, but just before that, the standard was changed to a stereo version. EMI’s Mike Jarrett, who was in charge, produced a master tape that was a slap on the original stereo master. However, George Martin, who heard the master, suggested a remix. As a result, the “remix stereo version” was released on CD worldwide. And so far, a well-known story. However, something happened here. The CD was supposed to have been released in a universal standard, but for some reason the Canadian CD “Help!” Was released two years later. Only “Rubber Soul” was different. The mix was different from other countries’ editions, and it was the “original stereo version” produced by Jarrett. This wasn’t a plan or a prank, it was just a mistake. It is not clear who made the mistake in the field, but it is said that it was probably a mistake in sending the digital tape. In the first place, each country’s CD is pressed by each country from the master sent from the home country. In the case of EMI, until the early 90’s, it was sent on digital tape instead of glass master CD, and it is pointed out that it may have been mistaken here. Speaking of “original stereo MIX” here, many people will remember “The Beatles MONO BOX” in 2009. Yes, that box set contains an original mix of stereo and monaural, which is now officially the “first CD of the original stereo.” However, this work is the “true first CD” that existed before that. The natural feeling is tremendous. If you trace the origin, even if it is the same master tape, the mastering of the finish is different, and the unprocessed sound by simple digitization before commercialization. And above all, there is a 20-year gap in the timing of digitization. Unlike LP, which records in physical shape, the master tape is magnetic. Magnetism disappears over time, and tape is physically vulnerable to aging. Therefore, it is said that it is preferable to digitize as soon as possible, and this work reprinted from the Canadian edition in 1989 has a sound that is 20 years younger than “MONO BOX”. George Martin said about the 1987 remix, “I put it back apart and then rearranged it in much the same way,” and did not make any major changes. The processing of localization and effects was very similar to the original, but “very similar” is not “the same”. This work is the “real mix” at the time when the historical masterpiece was produced, and it conveys the “sound 20 years younger” than the current version as it is. Of course, the “1989 Canadian CD” created by the accident was discontinued long ago. The sound of this work will not be “official” in the future. However, what flows out of this work must be “genuine” even if it is not “official”. Please take this opportunity to experience the true daimyo board that everyone in the know knows.

偶然とミスとカン違い……さまざまな要因が重なって生み出された貴重バージョンの『ヘルプ！』と『ラバー・ソウル』。“オリジナル・ステレオMIX＆ノン・リマスター”の大名盤セットがギフト・リリース決定です。

本作の正体とは、廃盤となっている80年代の公式CD『ヘルプ！』『ラバー・ソウル』。ただし、他国盤とは一線を画する“1989年カナダ盤CD『C2 46439』『C2 46440』”なのです。一体、このカナダ盤が他国盤や現行盤とどう違うのか。それをご説明するため、まずは時計の針を1987年にまで戻してみましょう。
1987年と言えば、ビートルズのCD化が動き出した時代。ただし、全アルバムが一斉にCDでリリースされたわけではなく、『ヘルプ！』『ラバー・ソウル』は『リボルバー』と合わせたリリース第２弾でした。当初、モノラル版によるCD化が予定されていたのですが、直前になってステレオ版に規格が変更。担当だったEMIのマイク・ジャレットは、オリジナルのステレオ・マスターをでじたるかしたマスター・テープを制作しました。ところが、そのマスターを聴いたジョージ・マーティンはリミックスを提案。結果「リミックス・ステレオ版」が全世界的にCDで発売されたのです。
と、ここまではよく知られた話。ところが、ここで何かが起きたのです。CDは全世界統一規格でリリースされたはずだったのですが、どういうわけか２年遅れで発売されたカナダ盤CD『ヘルプ！』『ラバー・ソウル』だけは違った。他国盤とはミックスが異なっており、ジャレットが制作した「オリジナル・ステレオ版」だったのです。これは計画でも悪戯でもなく、単なる手違いでした。現場で誰がどんな取り違いをしたのかまでは明らかになっていませんが、恐らくはデジタル・テープの送付ミスではないかと言われている。そもそも各国盤CDは母国から送られてきたマスターから国毎にプレスするもの。EMIの場合、90年代初期まではガラスマスターCDではなくデジタル・テープで送付しており、ここで取り違えられた可能性が指摘されているのです。
ここで「オリジナル・ステレオMIX」と言えば、2009年に『ザ・ビートルズ MONO BOX』を思い出される方も多いでしょう。そう、かのボックスセットにはステレオとモノラルのオリジナルMIXが収録されており、現在ではこれが正式な「オリジナル・ステレオの初CD化」とされています。しかし、本作はそれ以前に存在した「真の初CD」なのです。
そのナチュラル感は絶大。大元を辿れば同じマスター・テープではあっても仕上がりのマスタリングが異なり、製品化に至る前のシンプルなデジタル化による無加工サウンド。そして何より、デジタル化のタイミングに20年の開きがあるのが大きい。物理的な形状で記録するLPとは異なり、マスターテープは磁気。磁気は時間の経過と共に消失していき、テープは物性的に経年劣化に弱い。そのため、可能な限り早くデジタル化されるのが好ましいとされており、1989年カナダ盤から復刻された本作は『MONO BOX』より20年若いサウンドが封じられているわけです。

ジョージ・マーティンは1987年のリミックスについて「バラバラに戻してから、またほとんど同じように整理し直した」と語っており、大きな変更はしませんでした。定位やエフェクト等の処理もオリジナルに酷似していましたが、「酷似」は「同じ」ではない。本作こそが歴史的名盤が制作された時点での「本当のミックス」であり、現行盤よりも「20年若いサウンド」を生のままに伝えてくれるのです。
もちろん、事故によって生まれた「1989年カナダ盤CD」はとっくの昔に廃盤。今後も、本作のサウンドが「正式」となることはないでしょう。しかし、本作から流れ出るのは「正式」ではなくても「本物」に違いない。知る人ぞ知る真の大名盤、ぜひこの機会にご体験ください。
