AEROSMITH in 1978, when he performed at the biggest event of the century, “CALIFORNIA JAM 2”, which attracted 350,000 people. The symbolic sound board that pours the historical stage into the brain is brushed up. Introducing a press CD that permanently preserves the highest peak sound by “GRAF ZEPPELIN” mastering.
This work was recorded on “March 18, 1978, Ontario Motor Speedway”. This is the soundboard recording. Speaking of live performances in 1978, it has also become “LIVE! BOOTLEG” and video work “LIVE TEXXAS JAM ’78”. In order to understand the situation around that time, let’s look back from the whole view of the activities at that time.

This is the 1977/1978 AEROSMITH. “Official ○ song” is the recording time of “LIVE! BOOTLEG”. The official traditional board partly used the 1973 take, but it was mostly produced from “DRAW THE LINE Tour”. The main is “North America # 3”, and “CALIFORNIA JAM 2” of this work was also one of them. Now let’s focus on “North America #3” and take a closer look.

…… And, in this way, most of “LIVE! BOOTLEG” was solidified and recorded, but “CALIFORNIA JAM 2” appeared just before that. It was a concert that was the 6th performance of “North America # 3”. Various records are left only for the famous super huge event in history, but the most important of them is the long sound board that leaked out in the early 90’s. This work is a detailed reproduction of the most important sound board. It is the highest peak update board that has been refined with detailed mastering of “GRAF ZEPPELIN”.
Is the point here “length” or “completeness”? If you are an avid collector, you may know that a full version sound board has appeared in recent years, but this full version was the best in terms of perfection. Most of them were leaked soundboards from the 90’s, but only a few missing songs were patched with another soundboard. However, this supplementary sound board had a considerable gap with the main part in terms of quality, and even if it was connected, it did not become a natural live album. Therefore, this work sticks to the degree of perfection as “one live album”, and there is no compensation. Only the outflow sound board with a sense of unity was simply refined.
And that sound is the best ever. In terms of work, it’s the same as usual for “GRAF ZEPPELIN”, such as pitch and phase correction with accuracy that doesn’t allow deviations of 1/1000 second, balance adjustment after band analysis, various noise treatments, and so on. As a matter of fact, in the case of a sound board (especially when making use of the rough feeling directly connected to the desk like this work), it may be difficult to understand the effect of each one, but the top of the mountain where dust is piled up is high. You can enjoy the perfection that draws out the possibilities of the original sound as much as possible.
Among them, the most obvious one is the processing between songs after playing “Lord Of The Thighs”. Perhaps because the outflow master was more than 30 years ago, the editing is a little rough even if the freshness is good. The same part was recorded in duplicate at the tape change point. This work corrects such ara one by one. I pursued perfection as a seamless live album.
“Completion” can be rephrased as “work feeling”. What you can enjoy in this work like this is the stage that was also the peak of AEROSMITH in the 70’s. As mentioned above, it is not a complete recording, but let’s organize the contents at the end.

“DEFINITIVE BOSTON 1978 (Zodiac 528)” is the highest peak of the full soundboard album of the peak era. It still hasn’t changed. However, there is nothing that surpasses “CALIFORNIA JAM 2” in terms of the importance of the show itself. I want to enjoy such an extreme show as one music work (without feeling patchy). This work is also one of the crystals of that feeling.
The 70’s AEROSMITH was mysterious, dangerous, and yet extremely cool. This work is the live album of the climax that they shined most dazzlingly. Please enjoy it fully with a press CD that leaves its brilliance forever. 77 minutes, it is the strongest live album that can be listened to on one sheet.

これが1977年／1978年のAEROSMITH。「公式○曲」とあるのが『LIVE! BOOTLEG』の録音時期です。公式の伝統盤は一部1973年のテイクも使用されていましたが、おおよそは”DRAW THE LINE Tour”から製作。そのメインが「北米#3」であり、本作の“CALIFORNIA JAM 2”もその一幕でした。ここで「北米#3」をフォーカスし、さらに詳細に確認してみましょう。

……と、このように『LIVE! BOOTLEG』の大半が固めて録音されていたわけですが、“CALIFORNIA JAM 2”出演はその直前。「北米#3」の６公演目にあたるコンサートでした。歴史に名高い超巨大イベントだけにさまざまな記録が残されておりますが、その中でも最重要なのが90年代初期に流出した長尺サウンドボード。本作は、その最重要サウンドボードを精緻に復刻。「GRAF ZEPPELIN」の細密マスタリングで磨き直した最高峰更新盤なのです。
ここでポイントなのは「長さ」か「完成度」か。熱心なコレクター諸兄なら近年、完全版サウンドボードが登場したこともご存知と思いますが、この完全版は完成度の点では今イチでした。ほとんどは90年代の流出サウンドボードながら、欠けていた数曲分だけを別サウンドボードでパッチしていました。ところが、この補填サウンドボードはクオリティ面で本編とかなりの落差があり、繋いでも自然なライヴアルバムとはならなかったのです。そこで、本作は「１枚のライヴアルバム」としての完成度にこだわり、補填はあえてなし。統一感ある流出サウンドボードのみをシンプルに磨き込んだのです。
そして、そのサウンドこそが過去最高。作業的には「GRAF ZEPPELIN」のいつも通りでして、1/1000秒のズレも許さない精度のピッチや位相補正、帯域分析を経た上でのバランス調整、各種ノイズのトリートメント等々など。実のところ、サウンドボードの場合（特に本作のように卓直結のラフ感も活かす場合）は１つひとつの効能は分かりづらかったりもしますが、塵が積もった山の頂は高い。原音の持つ可能性を可能な限り引き出した完成度が味わえるのです。
そんな中で一番分かりやすいのは「Lord Of The Thighs」演奏後の曲間処理でしょうか。流出マスターは30年以上前だったせいか、鮮度は良くても編集がやや雑。テープチェンジの箇所に同じパートがダブって収録されていました。本作はそうしたアラも逐一補正。シームレスなライヴアルバムとしての完成度を追求したのです。
「完成度」は「作品感」と言い換えても良いでしょう。そんな作品然とした本作で楽しめるのは、70年代AEROSMITHの絶頂でもあったステージ。前述の通り完全収録ではないわけですが、最後にその内容も整理しておきましょう。

The main press CD is a soundboard album where you can enjoy the historically famous climax stage. It is a decision board that emphasizes “completeness and work feeling”. As I mentioned in the commentary, although the leaked soundboard itself was an incomplete version, I also discovered individual soundboards of songs that had been leaked in recent years. All songs are now available. In the main part, you can enjoy the sense of unity with only one sound board, but as a bonus, we also prepared a “all songs version” that connects sound boards for all songs.
Therefore, this work contains the same “March 18, 1978 California Jam II” as the main press CD. This is the soundboard recording. Not only the show but also the sound source, most of this work is the same outflow sound board as the main press CD, but this work also complements the two missing songs. However, it is a little different from simply adding only those two songs. In order to explain that side, let’s reorganize the full set here.

… and it looks like this. There were two songs “Walk This Way” and “Toys In The Attic” that were missing, but the complementary soundboard also had “Big Ten Inch Record” played before “Walk This Way”. Here, emphasis is placed on the connection between sound sources, and “Big Ten Inch Record / Walk This Way” is also replaced as a set.
“Connection… yes, this was the biggest problem.” As a matter of fact, the supplementary sound board excavated later has excellent quality and even stereo. In that sense, it is wonderful, but in terms of sound quality and tone color, it inevitably feels uncomfortable with the main long sound board. We have mastered it as close as possible and finished it much more naturally than the previous one, but still, if you experience the main press CD and this work, you will not be able to understand why this work was not made into a press. Is not it.
It’s kind of an excuse title, but even so, it’s a full live album. The live performance of precious cut songs and the flow of the show are reproduced, and above all, the show itself is the most important concert in history. The real thrill of being able to enjoy all the songs and the whole view on the sound board is irreplaceable. Assuming that the degree of perfection as a music work is left to the main press CD, there is no doubt that this work is also inevitable as a valuable all-song sound board collection. A valuable chance to get such a work at the same time. Please don’t miss it!

本編プレスCDは、歴史に名高い絶頂ステージを楽しめるサウンドボード・アルバム。「完成度・作品感」重視で極めた決定盤です。その解説でも触れましたが、流出サウンドボード自体は不完全版だったものの、近年になって漏れていた曲の細切れサウンドボードも個別に発掘。現在では全曲分が登場してもいます。本編ではあくまで１本サウンドボードによる統一感を味わっていただけるわけですが、そのボーナスには全曲分のサウンドボードを繋ぎ合わせた「全曲版」もご用意しました。
というわけで、本作に収められているのは本編プレスCDと同じ「1978年３月18日カリフォルニア・ジャムII」。そのサウンドボード録音です。ショウだけでなく、音源的にも本作の大半は本編プレスCDと同じ流出サウンドボードなわけですが、本作は欠けていた２曲も補完されている。ただし、単純にその２曲だけが追加されているのとはちょっと違う。その辺もご説明するため、ここでフルセットを整理しなおしてみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。欠けていたのは「Walk This Way」「Toys In The Attic」の２曲ですが、補完用サウンドボードはさらに「Walk This Way」の前に演奏された「Big Ten Inch Record」もありました。ここでは音源同士の接続を重視し、「Big Ten Inch Record／Walk This Way」もセットで差し替えてあるのです。
接続……そう、この点が最も問題でもありました。実のところ、後から発掘された補填サウンドボードはクオリティも素晴らしく、ステレオでさえある。その意味では素晴らしいのですが、音質・音色面でメインの長尺サウンドボードとどうしても違和感が発生する。マスタリングで可能な限り近づけ、既発よりも遙かに自然には仕上げておりますが、それでも本編プレスCDと本作を体験したら、なぜ本作がプレス化されなかったのかご理解頂けるのではないでしょうか。
なんだか言い訳タイトルみたいな話になってしまいましたが、そうは言ってもフル・ライヴアルバム。貴重なカット曲の生演奏やショウの流れが再現されていますし、何よりショウそのものが歴史上の最重要コンサート。その全曲・全景をサウンドボードで味わえる醍醐味は何物にも代えられません。音楽作品としての完成度は本編プレスCDに任せるとして、本作もまた貴重な全曲サウンドボード・コレクションとして不可避なのも間違いないのです。そんな本作も同時に手に入れられる貴重なチャンス。どうぞ、どなた様もお見逃しなく！
