Released in August 1970, Eric Clapton’s first solo album “ERIC CLAPTON”. Did you know that there were three types of mixes in this album? The mix of the board that has been released to the public from the LP era to the present is a mix produced by the famous producer Tom Dowd who produced that “LAYLA AND OTHER ASSORTED LOVE SONGS”. And the second one, which was recorded in the deluxe edition of the album released in June 2006, is a mix of Delaney Bramlet (Delaney & Bonnie & Friends), who had a full support for Clapton’s solo album production. Mix of. The third mix is ​​Eric Clapton’s own mix, which was released by Atco Records in the United States, who released the album in a hurry to release it and used it in the first edition after pressing a very small amount. Due to the existence of three types of mixes, the recording of this album was completed in January 1970, but the release was delayed until August. Eventually it was unified into a mix by Tom Dowd and released worldwide (this was adopted by the second press in the US). The history of the three types of mixes will be described later, but if you read up to this point, most people will understand that the valuable mix that can not be heard easily now is the “mix by Eric Clapton”. ━ What is important about this “Eric Clapton Mix” is that in all of Clapton’s works, his own mix is ​​the only one (although produced). And the “Eric Clapton Mix” is completely different from Tom Dowd Mix and Delaney Mix, so the impression of the album is totally different from them. Explaining the differences in detail (Tom Dowd Mix is ​​abbreviated as TD and Delaney Mix is ​​abbreviated as DB)

1. Slunky: The intro contains sound effects not included in TD and DB. A completely different take where the guitar solo is different from TD and DB.

2. Bad Boy… Vocal echo is quite deep, and it is a completely different vocal take from TD and DB. Also, Obrigato’s guitar is a completely different take from TD and DB.

3. Lonesome And A Long Way From Home… A count by Clapton is in front of the intro. The echo of the vocal is quite deep. The phase of one stroke of flexatone (percussion) after wow wow solo is arranged on the left channel, unlike TD and DB.

4. After Midnight… At the beginning is the voice of Delaney Bramlet, which is not included in TD and DB. The intro contains brass not found in TD. The echo of the vocal is quite deep. Unlike the TD and DB, the intro drum is located on the left channel.

5. Easy Now…No particular difference.

6. Blues Power: The rehearsal part for 29 seconds is recorded at the beginning (with Leon Russell’s guide vocal). Obrigato’s guitar is a completely different take from TD and DB.

7. Bottle Of Red Wine… Vocal echo is in the middle of TD and DB. The ending is shorter (cut) than TD and DB.

8. Lovin’ You Lovin’ Me… No big difference from TD.

9. Told You For The Last Time… The left channel contains a Clapton rhythm guitar not found on the TD.

10. Don’t Know Why… In TD, the center channel wah wah guitar is arranged in the right channel, and the rhythm guitar by Clapton that is not in the TD is in the left channel.

11. Let It Rain…The sound is emitted for 14 seconds at the beginning (the stroke of an acoustic guitar is supposed to be played by guest musician Stephen Stills). The echo of the vocal is quite deep.

There are differences as described above. If it’s so different, it would be natural if the album’s impression changed. Even if you’re not a fan, the Clapton Mix is ​​definitely worth a listen. The overall impression is that Clapton’s guitar play is recorded more than the general Tom Dowd mix, and it seems that it is superior in terms of rawness such as counting, rehearsal part, sound output part.

When recording was completed at the Village Recorder Studio in LA in January 1970, Delaney Bramlet started working on the mix. However, Clapton, who returned to England after the recording, brought back one song (probably Told You For The Last Time) multitrack tape. Delaney completed the mix of the other songs as he waited for the tape to come back from Clapton. Clapton, on the other hand, was waiting in London for a master tape to be sent by Delaney other than this one. I was going to combine it with one song I mixed myself to complete the album. Delaney is waiting for one multitrack tape from Clapton in LA, Clapton is waiting for a mixed down master tape in London except one from Delaney. It’s a wonderful mistake. British Polydor Records, who want to release quickly, will order all the multitrack tapes from Atlantic Records for Clapton. “Don’t wait for the tapes from Delaney, complete the mix quickly with this.” It was Clapton who worked on the mix at the Olympic Sound Studio, but I was confused by the mixing work of my first experience and completed it, but I do not know whether this is the best mix. As time went by by mischief, Atlantic Records decided to order his own engineer, Tom Dowd, to mix from scratch. It was completed, and Tom Dowd Mix was adopted for the British version, but in the United States, which was ahead of the release date in the United Kingdom, Atco Records of the publisher waited for Tom Dowd’s work to be completed. Instead, Clapton ordered a mixed master tape and adopted it to release the first edition (the master tape was unified into the Tom Dowd mixed version).
This was how it happened. We can now hear the three mixes thanks to Delaney and Clapton’s lack of contact. It may be called a history mischief.

3. Lonesome And A Long Way From Home・・・イントロ前にクラプトンによるカウントが入っている。ボーカルのエコーがかなり深い。ワウワウソロ後のフレクサトーン（パーカッション）の一打の位相がTDとDBとは違い、左チャンネルに配されている。

4. After Midnight・・・冒頭にTDとDBには入っていないデラニー・ブラムレットの話し声が入っている。イントロにTDにはないブラスが入っている。ボーカルのエコーがかなり深い。イントロのドラムがTDとDBとは違い、左チャンネルに配されている。

5. Easy Now・・・特に違いはなし。

6. Blues Power・・・冒頭に29秒に亘るリハーサル部分が収録されている（レオン・ラッセルのガイドボーカル入り）。オブリガートのギターがTDとDBとは完全別テイク。

7. Bottle Of Red Wine・・・ボーカルのエコーがTDとDBの中間くらいになっている。エンディングがTDとDBより短くなっている（切れている）。

8. Lovin’ You Lovin’ Me・・・TDと大差なし。

9. Told You For The Last Time・・・TDにないクラプトンのリズムギターが左チャンネルに入っている。

10. Don’t Know Why・・・TDではセンターチャンネルのワウワウギターが右チャンネルに配され、TDにはないクラプトンによるリズムギターが左チャンネルに入っている。

11. Let It Rain・・・冒頭14秒に亘る音出し（アコースティックギターのストローク＝ゲストミュージシャンのスティーヴン・スティルスのプレイと思われる）が入っている。ボーカルのエコーがかなり深い。

以上のような違いがあります。これほど違えば、アルバムの印象が変わっても当然のことでしょう。ファンならずとも、クラプトン・ミックスは一度は聴いてみる価値はあるものです。全体の印象は、一般的なトム・ダウド・ミックスよりもクラプトンのギタープレイが多めに収録されていて、カウント入り、リハーサル部分、音出し箇所など生々しさの点で優っている感じです。

自身初となるソロアルバム。「こう聴いてほしい。こう聴かせたい。」とクラプトンが考えてミックスしたと思えば、彼のスピリットを感じていただけるようなミックスとも言えそうです。LP落としなどではなく、遂に日の目を見たマルチトラックからの「エリック・クラプトン・ミックス」のステレオマスター。ファンならば是非一家に一枚！ファンならずとも一般のリリースバージョンとの聴き比べが楽しめます（こんなに違うんですから）！

さて、余談になりますが、3種類のミックスが発生した経緯を記しておきましょう。一言で言えば、「報連相って大事」（？）ってことです。

70年1月にLAのヴィレッジ・レコーダー・スタジオでレコーディングが終了すると、デラニー・ブラムレットが現地でミックスに取り掛かりました。しかしレコーディング終了後にイギリスに帰ったクラプトンが1曲（恐らくTold You For The Last Time）のマルチトラックテープを持ち帰ってしまいました。デラニーはクラプトンからそのテープが返送されてくるのを待ちながら、他の曲のミックスを完了しました。一方のクラプトンはこの1曲以外のデラニーがミックスしたマスターテープが送られてくるのをロンドンで待っていました。それと自分でミックスした1曲を合体させてアルバムを完成させるつもりだったのです。デラニーはLAでクラプトンからの1曲のマルチトラックテープを待っている、クラプトンはロンドンでデラニーからの1曲を除くミックスダウン済みのマスターテープを待っている。見事な行き違いです。リリースを急ぎたい英ポリドール・レコードは、アトランティック・レコードから全曲分のマルチトラックテープを取り寄せ、クラプトンに託します。「デラニーからのテープなど待っていないで、これで早くミックスを完成させろ」ということです。オリンピック・サウンド・スタジオに篭ってミックスに取り掛かったクラプトンでしたが、自身初体験のミキシング作業に困惑し、一応完成させたものの、これが本当にベストなミックスかどうかが分からない。いたずらに時間ばかりが過ぎる中、業を煮やしたアトランティック・レコードは自社所属のエンジニア、トム・ダウドに命じて一からミックスをさせることにしました。それが完成し、イギリス盤にはトム・ダウド・ミックスが採用されたのですが、イギリスよりもリリース日を前倒しにしていたアメリカでは、発売元のアトコ・レコードがトム・ダウドの作業完了を待てず、クラプトンがミックスしたマスターテープを取り寄せ、それを採用して初回盤をリリースしたのでした（その後マスターテープはトム・ダウド・ミックスバージョンに統一されました）。
こういう経緯だったのです。デラニーとクラプトンが連絡を取り合わなかったおかげで3種類のミックスを今、我々は聴くことができるわけです。歴史の悪戯と言ってもいいかもしれません。

さあ、遂に初めてオフィシャルクオリティでリリースされる「エリック・クラプトン・ミックス」。これは今年一番の重大ニュースかも！
