Live at Orpheum Theatre, Boston, MA, USA 8th September 2002
Play sample :
Twenty years have already passed since the 2002 “LICKS” tour, which I thought was the recent Stones live period. The tour, which was carried out at venues such as stadiums, arenas, and theaters, attracted a lot of attention at the time, and it is now a long time ago that many items were created in rear tie as the process progressed. Many of them are now difficult to obtain, but among them, the theater gig, which was the highlight of the “LICKS” tour, is still very popular. Because of the theater, the impact and fun of the rare selection of songs has not faded.
Boston’s Orpheum Theater was the beginning of that epoch-making theater gig. Since it was the first theater gig held at the opening of the “LICKS” tour, two types of audience recordings were released from the night that attracted the attention of maniacs all over the world. VGP “65 LICKS” and “CLUB SHOW” released from the label FREE-AS-A-BOOT appeared, but the former was superior in terms of sound quality. It is not unreasonable, but because of the special gig where the ticket competition was unfolded, both are sound images with a sense of distance, and among them, the VGP board (hereinafter referred to as “existing board”) used, In other words, “recorder 1” is still a good recording that can be used well.
However, the era is in the middle of the Equalizing Wars. Rather, it seems that it is impossible to put out the sound source without tampering with it. Even though it was a digital audience recording for the 21st century, it was still equalized when it was released.
As a feature of such “recorder 1”, it captures the lively and intimate sense of presence that seems to be a club overall with a harmonious balance. It was characteristic that whistling flew around, but this scene should make you realize that it is the same sound source this time. However, I think that this release will make you realize that the sound quality is completely different from the release of the original sound source.
As I mentioned earlier, the already-launched version has a flashy equalization that seems to be the release in 2002, and when I listen to it now in 2023, the bass reverberates, and in a sense, it has a texture that makes you feel the times. Certainly around 2002, items finished with such sounds were released as a matter of course.
This time, almost no equalization is applied, and it will be released on a limited press CD in its raw state, but you may be surprised by the difference in sound quality. The reason is that the difference is so clear that you can hear it at a glance. In other words, the equalization of the already-launched board shows such a flashy finish, for example, if you listen to and compare it around “Brown Sugar”, is it another recording? So much that I’m going to have an illusion.
The difference from the already-launched board is so conspicuous, and this time it has a very natural and refreshing impression. However, this sound source failed to record the beginning of the opening “Jumping Jack Flash”, and the already-launched board compensated for the rough sound quality “recorder 3” from before the performance, but this time “recorder 2 By supplementing from “CLUB SHOW”, it was much easier to hear, and it was put together smoothly.
And the Stones themselves put a lot of effort into the three types of stage types that were planned before the start, and it was the first club gig that was the centerpiece, and the aggressive set list still has a novel impact. . The first half of the gig is a parade of completely rare songs. It is a masterpiece that “Brand New Car”, which was mentioned earlier, and “Parachute Woman”, which has never been played only on this day, are played in succession on a regular stage. It seems that both of them ended up showing off only on this day because it was too maniac song selection, but it is unique to this day that each performance does not end at a rare level.
Until now, the club gig, which had been held only in special circumstances, was incorporated as part of the tour, and only in Boston, which was finally realized as the first gig, the excitement of the venue was really hot. After all, the live performance of “Heart Of Stone”, which made maniacs all over the world go crazy, also conveys such a sense of presence. What’s more, compared to the existing board, it’s a natural listening experience.
Also, although it is the beginning of the tour, it has already been warmed up in Toronto and after two regular stages after arriving in Boston, which leads to the magnificent performance of many rare numbers that were shown here. That’s right. The club gig opened by Stones, who literally turned aggressive, was released as a natural upper version that respected the original sound quality for the first time. After that, many valuable repertoires were shown at the 2002 club gig of the “LICKS” tour such as Wiltan in Roseland, but among them, the set list and performance content of this day are exceptional!
★ This is a really great master sound source.
