昨年リリースされた「OAKLAND 1989 1ST NIGHT: MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES」の元になったミラード・マスターが公開された際、オークランド・コロシアムの二日目も彼は録音しているよ…とほのめかされていたのですが、この二日目こそマニアが聞きたかった日だと思えてなりません。というのも、この日はいつも「Harlem Shuffle」が演奏されるべき位置で「One Hit (To The Body)」が披露された極めてレアな展開の日だったからです。
「One Hit」といえば「STEEL WHEELS」ツアーの89年ツアーが完遂される前にレパートリーから落とされてしまった悲運のナンバー。ただしツアー開始直後はレギュラーに演奏するつもりだったようで、ロニーが「Dead Flowers」から続けてストリング・ベンダー付きテレキャスターを駆使するレパートリーとして演奏される位置まで決められていました。
幸いにもこの時期にサウンドボードの初日、良好オーディエンスの二日目というトロントの音源が普及しており、マニアにとって短命に終わった「One Hit」のライブ演奏と言えばそれらを思い浮かべられるはず。それらに加えて昨年はツアー最初の二日間がそれぞれ「PHILADELPHIA 1989 FIRST NIGHT」同「SECOND NIGHT」としてリリースされ、以前には考えられなかったほど89年「One Hit」ライブバージョンのアイテムが手に入りやすい状況となっています。
ただしアイテムで聞かれたライブ演奏はどれもツアー序盤のテイクばかり。そのせいで「One Hit」はツアー開始直後だけしか演奏されなかったレパートリーだと錯覚しているマニアも少なくないかと思われます。ところが実際には11月まで散発的にステージで演奏されていたのでした。

ツアー開始直後にはレギュラー扱いだった「One Hit」は9月21日のシラキュースを最後に一旦セット落ち。トロント以降はオーディエンス録音のクオリティがイマイチだったり流出プロショット映像では肝心なこの曲が収録されてないなど、音源面でも不遇な状況が続いてしまいます。それからちょうど一か月後、今度は10月21日のLAメモリアル・コロシアムから「Harlem Shuffle」との日替わりナンバー、つまり「DIRTY WORK」つながりの日替わりコーナー的な位置で復活を遂げたのでした。
ということは演奏される位置も変わって「Undercover Of The Night」から立て続けに披露されるパターン。問題はこの時期の復活「One Hit」演奏を捉えたアイテムが皆無という状況。今となっては本曲が10月から11月にかけて再度演奏されていたことを知らない人の方が多いのではないか。
そんな時期の「One Hit」ショーを収めた数少ないアイテムであり、なおかつ伝説のリアタイ・リリースCDにしてチャプターが打たれないまま売りに出されてしまった「SHEA STADIUM NEW YORK CITY OCT 28.1989」はアイテムとしても音源としても当時からショボく、さらに近年リリースされたシェア・スタジアム音源はどれも「One Hit」が演奏されていない日ばかり。そんな状況にミラードの埋もれていた音源が一石を投じてくれるとは！

前回の「OAKLAND 1989 1ST NIGHT」でも明らかとなったように、珍しくミラードがオークランドまで出向いてくれ、なおかつ二日目までも録音してくれていたのには感謝しかありません。今回の初登場音源も前日と似た質感の録音状態であるのですが、さすがに二日目だけのことはあって、それよりも少し音像が近い。さらには「Undercover Of The Night」辺りからバランスも良くなり、晴れて「短期間だけ復活した「One Hit」ライブ演奏の良好オーディエンス」が登場したと言えるでしょう。
おまけにツアー開始から二か月が経過しての演奏ということもあり、ツアー序盤とはまるで雰囲気が違う。その頃よりもルーズで荒々しい演奏ぶりがストーンズらしく、フィラデルフィアやトロントでの手探り感のある演奏を聞きなれたマニアなら随分と新鮮に感じられることでしょう。それが「Harlem Shuffle」の代わりに演奏され、なおかつ同曲が演奏されない89年のステージの記録と言うのも実に新鮮。結局オークランドの後はマイアミで一度演奏されただけにとどまり、遂にレパートリーお役御免となってしまうのでした。
今回はライブ演奏の極めて貴重な「One Hit」に終始してしまった感がありますが、もちろん他にも聞きどころが。終盤の「Satisfaction」ではトラブルでもあったのか、ミックがいつも通りに歌い出さず、イントロから少しの間で歌のない突発インスト状態が続いているのがとても面白い。前日と比べるとその違いは歴然。それどころか「STEEL WHEELS」ツアーを通しても変わったハプニングを捉えてくれている点も聞き逃せません。「OAKLAND 1989 1ST NIGHT」と同じように、いつものミラード・クオリティからすれば少し距離感のある音像ですが、それでも非常に聞きやすい音質であることは変わりない。何より1989年ツアーから久々に変化に富んだ一日を捉えた貴重初登場音源が発掘されました。しかもミラード・マスターで！
