A remix series of “Prof. Stoned”, which has become a hot topic in the Beatles. The PINK FLOYD edition is now available. It is an emergency release decision with a press CD that permanently preserves the shocking sound that the producer himself says, “Bolder than the Beatles”.
-Natural stereo feeling “Yoake no whistling”
I suddenly entered from the Beatles’ repeated calls, but the main character of this work is PINK FLOYD. This is a stereo remix of the debut album “Whistling at Dawn”. In the first place, it was officially released on both mono and stereo versions, but at the time of 1967, the standard for stereo works had not yet been established. Therefore, the mix of the stereo board is somewhat strange from the sense of the 70s and later. It depends on the song, but it felt like being caught between the guitar on the left and the rhythm section on the right, or being unable to hear the vocal from one side. It is also a sense of the times, and it is also the design of Mr. Norman Smith, who produced it, but it is undeniable that the popularity of the mono version is biased and the stereo version has an antique taste. Moreover, the original 4-track master was discarded in 1967 (only “Matilda Mother” remains), so we can not expect an official remix.
“That’s where this game came into play.” It is a piece that realized the fan’s dream of “usually stereo sense” dawn whistling “”. However, this “normal stereo” concept is not the first attempt this time. As you may know if you have read this article, “2019 STEREO REMIX” was very popular three years ago. Of course, this work is completely different from “2019 STEREO REMIX”. Created from scratch by completely unrelated “Prof. Stoned” and released very recently. Moreover, it is much more natural and vivid than the previous edition “2019 STEREO REMIX”. Furthermore, it is the latest version that comes with a bonus to single songs.
-The latest stereo that makes full use of all means
The following three types of “Dawn Whistler” are the basis of this edition. The main is “A” and “B/C” is a supplementary sub-source. Especially “C” is used only in a part of “Astronomy Domine”.
・A: 1994 remastered board (stereo)
・B: 2007 40th anniversary edition (mono & single songs)
・C: 1987 edition (stereo)
“A” is basically the base, but depending on the part, it can’t be used if there are unnatural panning movements, and there are elements that “A” lacks in the first place. That part is extracted from “B”. In terms of work, “A” and “B” are synchronized, both are disassembled into each instrument with Demix Pro, and the parts are reassembled from there. For example, “Interstellar Overdrive” is mostly adopted from “A”, and the organ and guitar are extracted from “B”. Of course, this is just a basic pattern. Depending on the part and how the effect is applied, we can extract the parts after making “A” mono, or use “B” as the base. It seems that they searched for the optimal solution by trying all kinds of means and combinations.
– More natural than the official one, and overwhelmingly brighter than the previous edition
In fact, this work is a wonderful work that you can fully feel its worth. A very impressive thing from the opening “Astronomy Domine”. In the official stereo board (that is, A), the left = drum / right = bass was completely divided, and the guitar and vocals were biased, but in this work, the rhythm section is the center. This allows the center of gravity to settle down, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the spatial sensation of guitars and vocals panning freely left and right.
This sense of balance is shared with the previous edition “2019 STEREO REMIX”, but this work has a different degree of perfection. “2019 STEREO REMIX” also seemed natural, but compared to this work, it is flat and the stereo space is narrow. In fact, the stereo pan width is narrower than “A”, and in terms of image, it was like an “evolutionary form of pseudo-stereo”. On the other hand, this work has an overwhelmingly natural sense of balance, but the bread width is equal to or greater than “A”. In addition, the sound quality itself is also clearer and more vivid than “2019 STEREO REMIX” (probably the selection of the original official board is different). It is a stereo mix that can be used even in modern times.
These differences explode in all songs. “Lucifer Sam” and “Pow R. Toc H.”, which were biased so that the head was pulled to the right, also become the center, and you can enjoy a much more spacious sense of space than “2019 STEREO REMIX”. “Interstellar Overdrive” is also great. The original was a strange sandwich with “right = rhythm section / left = high quality”, and at the end of the song, the timing of the bread did not match the tempo of the song. This work is freed from the feeling of being sandwiched between such instruments and the aggressive psychedelic flavor. You can enjoy the music and the performance itself in three dimensions.
★What is even more amazing is that the two songs “Arnold Layne” and “See Emily Play”, which only exist in monomix, are also stereo-remixed and included in the bonus. The degree of stereo separation is also excellent, and you can enjoy the surprise and excitement as if you were touching a new song. This is exactly the result of the evolution of waveform separation technology! I would like you to listen to this bonus track alone!
Certainly, as the creator himself says, “Bolder than the Beatles”. It is the latest remix album that explodes with remix technology that has evolved deeper. “2019 STEREO REMIX” seemed so wonderful, but after experiencing this work, I can only feel that things have grown hair. “Yoake no Whistler” is an imposing perfection that makes you want to call it a “true stereo version”. ●自然なステレオ感覚の『夜明けの口笛吹き』
いきなりビートルズ連呼から入ってしまいましたが、本作の主役はPINK FLOYD。デビュー・アルバム『夜明けの口笛吹き』のステレオ・リミックスです。そもそもモノ盤／ステレオ盤の双方で公式リリースされたわけですが、1967年当時はまだまだステレオ作品の定石も定まっていなかった。そのため、ステレオ盤のミックスは、70年代以降の感覚からするとやや奇異。曲によっても異なりますが、「左側のギターと右側のリズム隊に挟まれる」ですとか「片方からヴォーカルが聞こえない」のような異次元感覚でもありました。それもまた時代感であり、プロデュースを務めたノーマン・スミス氏の意匠でもあるわけですが、それゆえにモノ盤に人気が偏り、ステレオ盤にアンティーク的な味わいが定着してしまったのも否めない。しかも、オリジナルの４トラック・マスターは1967年に破棄されている（「Matilda Mother」のみ現存）ので、公式での再ミックスも望めません。
そこで登場したのが本作。「通常ステレオ感覚の『夜明けの口笛吹き』」というファンの夢を実現した１枚なのです。ただし、この「通常ステレオ化」構想は今回初めての試みではありません。本稿に目を留められた方ならご存知と思いますが、３年前には『2019 STEREO REMIX』が大好評を博しました。もちろん、本作は『2019 STEREO REMIX』とは完全に別物。まったく無関係の「Prof. Stoned」がイチから制作し、ごく最近になって公開したもの。しかも、前回盤『2019 STEREO REMIX』よりも遙かに自然で、鮮やか。さらにはシングル曲までボーナス付属している最新バージョンなのです。
●あらゆる手段が駆使された最新のステレオ化
今回盤の大元となっているのは以下３種の『夜明けの口笛吹き』。メインは「Ａ」で「Ｂ・Ｃ」は補足用のサブ・ソース。特に「Ｃ」は「Astronomy Domine」の一部でのみ使用されています。
・Ａ：1994年のリマスター盤（ステレオ）
・Ｂ：2007年の40周年盤（モノ＆シングル曲）
・Ｃ：1987年盤（ステレオ）
基本的に「Ａ」がベースですが、パートによっては不自然なパンの動きがあると使えませんし、そもそも「Ａ」には欠けている要素もある。そうしたパートを「Ｂ」から抽出しているわけです。作業的には「Ａ」と「Ｂ」を同期させ、両方をDemix Proで各楽器に分解し、そこからパーツを組み直していく。例えば「Interstellar Overdrive」なら、ほとんどが「Ａ」から採用され、オルガンとギターが「Ｂ」から抽出されているのです。もちろん、これはあくまで基本パターン。パートやエフェクトのかかり具合等によっては「Ａ」をモノ化してからパーツを抽出したり、「Ｂ」の方をベースにしたり。あらゆる手段と組み合わせを試しては、最適解を探っていったようです。
●公式よりナチュラルで、前回盤より圧倒的に鮮やか
実際、本作はその甲斐が十二分に感じられる素晴らしい出来映え。冒頭の「Astronomy Domine」からして大感動モノ。公式のステレオ盤（つまりＡ）では左＝ドラム／右＝ベースと完全に分けられ、ギターもヴォーカルも偏っていましたが、本作ではリズム隊がビシッとセンター。これによって重心が落ち着き、左右へ自在にパンするギターやヴォーカルの空間感覚にじっくりと浸れるのです。
こうしたバランス感覚は前回盤『2019 STEREO REMIX』とも共通しているわけですが、本作は完成度が段違い。『2019 STEREO REMIX』も自然には思えたものですが、本作と比べると平板でステレオ空間が狭い。実際、ステレオのパン幅は「Ａ」よりも狭く、イメージ的には「疑似ステレオの進化形」といった感じでした。それに対し、本作は圧倒的に自然なバランス感覚ながらパン幅も「Ａ」と同等以上なのです。さらに加えるなら、音質自体も『2019 STEREO REMIX』よりクッキリ鮮やか（恐らく元となった公式盤のセレクトが違うのでしょう）。まさに現代にも通用するステレオ・ミックスなのです。
こうした違いは全曲で炸裂。頭が右へ引っぱられるように偏っていた「Lucifer Sam」「Pow R. Toc H.」もセンターになり、かつ『2019 STEREO REMIX』よりも遙かに広々とした空間感覚が味わえる。「Interstellar Overdrive」も素晴らしい。オリジナルは「右＝リズム隊／左＝上物系」と妙なサンドイッチでしたし、終盤には曲テンポと合わないタイミングのパンで頭がかき回されていました。本作は、そうした楽器に挟まれる感覚や強引なサイケ風味から開放。楽曲と演奏そのものを立体的に味わえるのです。
★更に驚異的なのは、モノミックスしか存在しない「Arnold Layne」「See Emily Play」の2曲もステレオ・リミックスされてボーナスに収録されていることでしょう。ステレオの分離度も抜群によく、まるで新曲に触れるかのような驚きと感動を味わうことができるのです。これぞまさに波形分離技術の進化の賜物！このボーナストラックだけでもぜひ聴いていただきたい！
確かに、制作者自らが語る通り「ビートルズより大胆」。よりディープに進化したリミックス技術が炸裂した最新リミックス・アルバムです。あれほど素晴らしく思えた『2019 STEREO REMIX』も、本作を体験した後ではモノに毛が生えたようにしか感じられない。「真なるステレオ版」と呼びたくなる堂々たる完成度の『夜明けの口笛吹き』。どうぞ、いつまでも色あせないプレスCDで存分にご体験ください。
