With the excavation of the sound source for the last American tour of ZEP 1969 continuing over the past year, the upper version of Kansas City has arrived on November 5th. If you are an enthusiast of this audience recording, you may know that this day was a day when the incomplete recording of about 40 minutes was a disaster and it was always released as a two-disc bonus staff, so it is a day with a little impression. I cannot deny the feeling. Therefore, this time, in commemoration of the appearance of the upper version, this sound source is released as a limited press CD and a single item.
Certainly, the part from “White Summer” to the introduction of the members of “How Many More Times” is missing, and this recording condition hurts. However, it is also a fact that the content is still responsive. A great transitional period that began to break into innovative hard rock by breaking out of the psychedelic blues that was the cornerstone of ZEP live sound throughout 1969 and starting to release songs from the second album. Positionally, there is nothing wrong with the show that belongs between “O’KEEFE CENTRE 1969 LATE SHOW” and “FINAL WINTERLAND 1969 2ND NIGHT: SOURCE 2” released last year.
Fortunately, the sound source of the day was also recorded firmly in the first half of the live, so the performance of “Heartbreaker” that was just introduced as a repertoire is valuable. From the following year, the arrangements for live performances will escalate, but the studio version here is really fresh. This applies to all the performances of this song heard on the sound source of the same period, but it is fun to see the rare moment when Jimmy misplays the intro riff on this day. After that, it was said that there was such an uncertain scene at first in the song that was played almost every night until the dissolution of ZEP as a regular.
Although it was incompletely recorded, there is no doubt that it is a surprisingly easy-to-listen monaural audience. It may have been neglected because it was treated as a bonus in the items so far. Because the audience is very quiet in Kansas, and the unique deep sound image is combined to capture the performance in a very easy-to-hear state. Perhaps the live wasn’t very lively. With that in mind, Jimmy’s general mistake that occurred in the intro of “Heartbreaker” also makes sense.
However, ironically, it’s really easy to hear because the surroundings are quiet. It seems that Robert explodes a sharp scream in the quiet air in 1969, and “I Can’t Quit You Baby” is still a hyper scream. This may be because the experience of traveling to the United States throughout the year made Robert strong.
On the other hand, other members tend to be drunk by this light air (laughs), and the switching of each section is unstable not only in the previous “Heartbreaker” but also in “Dazed And Confused” (for example, Johnsy’s base after bowing). It seems that the band’s willingness to evolve the performance and the reaction of the venue are not intertwined.
The finale “How Many More Times” is the best example. At the end, the curtain is closed with the usual boogie development, but it seems that this day is the end without the excitement of the performance in front of the audience who lacked excitement. Speaking of ZEP in 1969, it was a time when explosive performances were easily produced every day, and the shows before and after were actually wonderful. Even so, I’m surprised at the development of “How Many” on this day, and at the same time it looks fresh.
In this way, the sound source is full of interesting scenes and crowds despite the short recording time, and yet the recording quality is easy to hear, and the state of this first generation will further refine it. For that reason, the original very slow pitch is adjusted exactly for this limited press CD release. After all, it was an instability that when the basic slow pitch state became “How Many ~”, it went down further. It’s more stable and easier to hear than the original sound source. In addition to that, please enjoy the 1969 Kansas performance, which was reborn with the upper feeling unique to low generation, in a simple format of one CD!
ここ一年の間でZEP1969年最後のアメリカ・ツアーの音源の発掘が続いているという状況の中、今度は11月5日カンザス・シティのアッパー版が登場しました。こちらのオーディエンス録音、マニアの方ならご存じかと思われますが、この日は40分程度の不完全録音が災いして常に二枚組のおまけ要員としてリリースされてばかりで、いまひとつ印象の薄い日という感が否めません。そこで今回はアッパー版の登場を記念して本音源を限定のプレスCDかつ単体アイテムとしてリリース。
確かに「White Summer」から「How Many More Times」のメンバー紹介までのパートがごっそり抜け落ちており、この収録状態は痛い。ところが、それでもなお聞き応えのある内容であるというのも事実。1969年を通してZEPライブサウンドの要であったサイケ・ブルースから抜け出し、セカンド・アルバムの楽曲を投入し始めたことで革新的なハードロックへと脱皮し始めた偉大なる過度期。位置的には昨年リリースされた「O’KEEFE CENTRE 1969 LATE SHOW」と「FINAL WINTERLAND 1969 2ND NIGHT: SOURCE 2」と合間に属するショーとくれば悪いはずがない。
幸いにも、この日の音源もライブ前半部分はしっかり収録してくれているので、レパートリーとして投入されたばかりの「Heartbreaker」の演奏が貴重。翌年からどんどんライブ用のアレンジがエスカレートしてゆく同曲ですが、ここでのスタジオ・バージョンに素直な演奏が実に新鮮。これは同時期の音源で聞かれる本曲の演奏すべてに当てはまることですが、この日は何とジミーがイントロのリフを弾き違えるというレアな一瞬が捉えられているのが何とも愉快。この後レギュラーとしてZEP解散まで毎晩のように演奏されてゆく曲にも最初はこんなおぼつかない場面があったとは。
不完全収録である反面、驚くほど聞きやすいモノラル・オーディエンスという点も疑いのないところ。それが今までのアイテムではおまけ扱いだったせいで軽視されてしまっていたのではないでしょうか。というのもカンザスは観客が非常に静かでして、そこに独特の奥行きのある音像が相まって非常に聞きやすい状態で演奏を捉えてくれている。もしかしたら、あまりライブが盛り上がっていなかったのかもしれません。そう考えれば「Heartbreaker」のイントロで起きたジミーの凡ミスにも合点がいく。
しかし皮肉なことに、周囲が静かなせいで本当に聞きやすい。その静かな空気の中でロバートがキレッキレのスクリームを炸裂させるのが69年らしいところで、「I Can’t Quit You Baby」などは相変わらずのハイパースクリーム。これは一年を通してアメリカを回った経験がロバートをたくましくさせたのかもしれません。
一方で他のメンバーはこの淡々とした空気に飲まれがち（笑）で、先の「Heartbreaker」だけでなく「Dazed And Confused」でも各セクションの切り替わりが不安定（例えばボウイングが終わってジョンジーのベースから始まる個所）なのが散見され、そこは演奏を進化させようというバンドの意欲と会場の反応が噛み合っていないかのようでもある。
その最たる例というべきなのがフィナーレ「How Many More Times」。最後は恒例のブギー展開で幕を閉じるのですが、盛り上がりを欠いた観客を前にして演奏も盛り上がることなく、まったりと終えてしまうのが何ともこの日らしい。69年のZEPといえば爆裂演奏を毎日やすやすと生み出していた時期ですし、実際に前後のショーも素晴らしい。それなのにこの日の「How Many～」の何となく終わってしまう展開には驚かされると同時に新鮮に映ってしまうのでは。
こうして短い収録時間ながらも面白い場面や目白押しという音源であり、それでいて聞きやすい録音クオリティでもあって、今回のファースト・ジェネレーションという状態がさらに磨きをかけてくれる。それだけに元の非常に遅いピッチは今回の限定プレスCDリリースに向けてきっちりとアジャスト。というのも、基本遅いピッチの状態が「How Many～」になるとさらに下がるという不安定さだったのです。そこはもう元の音源とは比べ物にならないほど安定して聞きやすくなった。そこに加えてロージェネレーションならではのアッパー感で生まれ変わった69年カンザス公演をCD一枚のお手軽フォーマットでサクッとお楽しみください！
