This is DIO in 1984/1985. “North America # 1” is the final leg of the “HOLY DIVER Tour”, after which “THE LAST IN LINE” was produced. From Pink Pop Festival to “North America # 3” was the culmination of “THE LAST IN LINE Tour”. Most of them were in North America, but the only difference was the middle “European” leg. The Birmingham performance of this work was the 15th concert.
A neat and powerful name recording was unearthed from such a show. There is no sense of distance anyway. Even if you listen carefully with headphones, you can’t feel the hall noise component, and the truth with a clear outline jumps into your ears, and the details are also vivid. If you listen to it microscopically, the sound of the snare sounds like an audience. It sounds like a vintage FM broadcast, probably because Vinnie Appice’s tone is light in the first place. In particular, the vocals are clear to the nuances contained in each word of the lyrics, and Vivian Campbell’s machine gun picking is also beautifully separated one by one. On the contrary, when it becomes quiet between songs, you can even see a slight electromagnetic noise that leaks out from the amplifier, “jijiji …”.
Moreover, this work is also the highest peak board that polished such a famous recording with meticulous mastering. It is no longer natural to adjust the pitch accurately. After passing through the band analysis, the balance of each range is corrected, and the change in stereo feeling and the fluctuation of the sound pressure are stable. The sound quality was high enough even with the original sound, but we maximized its potential.

これが1984年／1985年のDIO。「北米#1」は“HOLY DIVER Tour”の最終レッグで、その後に『THE LAST IN LINE』を製作。ピンクポップ・フェスから「北米#3」までが絶頂の“THE LAST IN LINE Tour”でした。そのほとんどが北米だったわけですが、唯一違ったのが中盤の「欧州」レッグ。本作のバーミンガム公演は、その15公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウから発掘されたのは、端正かつ力強い名録音。とにかく距離感がない。ヘッドフォンで耳を澄ませてもホール鳴り成分が感じられず、輪郭もくっきりとした真が耳元に飛びこみ、それに伴ってディテールも鮮やか。顕微鏡的に聴き込んでみるとスネアの音色がオーディエンスっぽい……かも。そもそもヴィニー・アピスの音色が軽めなこともあってか、ヴィンテージなFM放送のようにも聞こえる。特にヴォーカルは歌詞の一語一語どこか、そこに込められたニュアンスまで克明ですし、ヴィヴィアン・キャンベルのマシンガン・ピッキングも一発一発が綺麗にセパレート。それどころか、曲間で静かになった際にはアンプから漏れ出る「ジジジ……」という僅かな電磁ノイズまで分かるほどなのです。
しかも、本作はそんな名録音を細心マスタリングで磨き上げた最高峰盤でもある。ピッチを正確に整えるのはもはや当たり前。帯域分析を経た上で各音域のバランスを正し、ステレオ感の変化や音圧の揺れもビシッと安定。原音のままでも十分に高音質ではありましたが、その可能性を最大限に引き出したのです。
そんなタイト＆ダイレクト・サウンドで画かれるのは、キャリアの頂点に達したロニーの威風堂々たるフルショウ。前述のように、このツアーの象徴は公式映像『A SPECIAL FROM THE SPECTRUM』ですので、比較しつつ整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。現場でのフルセットはスペクトラム公演も本作も同じなのですが、編集されていた公式映像に対して本作は終始一貫の通し録音。公式では聴けなかった「One Night In The City」を始め、“THE LAST IN LINE Tour”の象徴「Egypt (The Chains Are On)」やツアー限定のレア曲「Mystery」等も楽しめる。RAINBOW／BLACK SABBATHのクラシックスはもちろんのこと、DIOのレパートリーも大代表作『HOLY DIVER』『THE LAST IN LINE』の名曲のみ。まさに極めつけのセットなのです。
しかも、そんな究極セットを綴るパフォーマンスも威風堂々。リーダーバンドで古巣を凌駕する成功を収めたロニーは自信満々ですし、ヴィヴィアンも若さ丸出しで想いの丈をぶつけるように弾き倒す。“THE LAST IN LINE Tour”は名作サウンドボードが何作も残されていたりしますが、充実感たっぷりのショウは何公演でも現場体験したくなる。DIOブートレッグの醍醐味が結晶になったような１枚なのです。
セット・パフォーマンス・サウンド……すべてが極めつけ級の実況録音。前述のようにサウンドボードも多いツアーだけにShadesレーベルからのご紹介となりましたが、内容的には永久保存プレス級の大傑作です。もちろん無論、コレクター諸兄なら絶対不可避の新名盤。どうぞ、細心マスタリングの最高峰盤で存分にご堪能ください。
