そんな本作に収められているのは、英国の人気番組“CLASSIC ALBUMS”。この番組はロック史に残る名盤を１枚ずつ取り上げ、メンバーやプロデューサー、マネージャー、ジャーナリストなど当時を知る人々のコメントを積み上げて現場を紐解いていくというもの。1997年の第１回（ちなみにポール・サイモンの『グレイスランド』でした）から現在までに45枚の名盤（オランダ編を加えると53枚）を取り上げており、PINK FLOYDの『狂気』は、その第22回でした。
このシリーズは英国でテレビ放送されたほか、DVDでの商品化も実現。本作はその公式品のコピー。。。。ではありません。某衛星放送局が2006年に放映した番組“ROCK THE CLASSIC”版。番組独自の字幕やボーナス映像も追加された日本放送バージョンなのです。
公式DVDをご覧になった方ならご存じだと思いますが、この番組は凡百のドキュメンタリーとは一線を画している。アルバム１枚に拘った構成もさることながら、内容が圧倒的に濃い。『狂気』編にしても製作に入るまでの時代背景や目指していたもの、作曲セッションの状況、歌詞世界、録音、編集、さらには世界的大ヒットへの経緯など、細部にわたって解説されていく。しかも、それらがことごとく面白い。えらくマニアックな話でも素人にも分かりやすく、エンターテインメントに仕立ててあるのです。例えば、作曲。リック・ライトが「Breathe」のピアノ・パートがマイルス・デイヴィスの「Kind Of Blue」をヒントにしていると明かす。そこではリック自身が「ＧからＥに映るパートは普通ならこういう弾き方になる」「でも、マイルスだからこうなる」と、本人が弾き比べてくれるのです。
さらに強烈なのがエンジニアのアラン・パーソンズ自身が解説するミックス作業。本人が本物のマルチトラックをかけながらミックス卓のつまみをいじり、作業を再現する。「デイヴ（ギルモアのメイン・ヴォーカル）だけだとこう」「ハーモニーが乗るとこう」「ここで周波数変換の効果を加えるとこうだ」「そして、バンド全体だとこうなる……」と実演しながら解説。ギルモアの本物のアカペラ・テイクも衝撃なら、徐々に慣れ親しんだサウンドに変化していくのも面白すぎる。さらには現在のギルモアやロジャーが生演奏し、それがアルバムとシクロしてもいく趣向も凄い。どうやってあの音世界が組み上がっていくのか、それが理屈を超えた「音」で実感できるのです。
実のところ、こうしたミックス解説はシリーズを通した番組の目玉でもあるのですが、『狂気』編はいつも以上。特に凄いのは効果音のセクションです。ギルモア自身が当時のシンセで単純な音からアルバムに使用されている効果音へと進化させ、エンジニアも加わって音楽に昇華させた当時を振り返る。「マイクスタンドに弦を当てて弾いた音、足音、鼓動、ドップラー効果……ぴったりのタイミングで鐘が鳴るようにするだけでも大変だった」あたりまでは普通のコメントですが、さらに踏み込み「マルチトラック・テープの位置を確かめ、６ｍｍテープにある元の音を合わせていく」「タイミングの位置はストップウォッチ頼りだ」と、詳細な作業手順まで話してくれる。私たちは成果物としてのアルバム完成品を何気なく聴いてきましたが、大量の効果音がピタッと合って曲を形づくることがいかに奇跡的なことなのか。その凄味を改めて知らしめてくれるのです。
さらには「The Great Gig in the Sky」でクレア・トリーが伝説的なスキャットを披露した時の様子や作曲者ロジャーが弾き語るブルース・バージョンの「Money」、プリズムのアートワークの秘話などなど……。いくら好きなバンドであっても音楽ドキュメンタリーは間延びするものですが、本作は１秒の隙も退屈もなく、１時間が過ぎ去っていく。ドキュメンタリー本編の最後には、日本放送独自に『PULSE』の「Time」が追加。さまざまな経緯を経た名盤が最終的にステージの現場にたどり着いた実感をもって本作は終了します。

ロックの枠を超え、20世紀音楽の最高傑作でもある『狂気』。その裏舞台を詳らかにする音楽ドキュメンタリーの超傑作です。リックの存命中にこの番組が製作されたことにまで感謝したくなるほどの素晴らしい１枚。どうぞ、この機会に貴重な日本放送バージョンでご体験ください。
