1982’s ZZ TOP opened its eyes to synth boogie with “EL LOCO” and entered a new world of sound. The symbolic image is now available in the finest master version.
The symbolic video was shot at the “May 28, 1982 Dortmund performance”. This is a multi-camera pro shot when I appeared in the West German specialty event “ROCKPOP IN CONCERT”. This event was held from 1978 to 1989 on the assumption that it will be broadcast on ZDF (2nd German Television). In 1982, it was held for a total of 5 days in May (2 days) and December (3 days), and ZZ TOP appeared in the former. On the same day, HEART, JETHRO TULL, STATUS QUO, Joan Jett & THE BLACKHEARTS, and SAXON shared the stage. Looking at ZZ TOP itself, it was also part of the “EL LOCO-MOTION Tour”. First, let’s check the position of the show from the panoramic view.

This is the outline of activities related to “EL LOCO”. As usual, the emphasis is on North America, and there are about 20 performances in Europe. In particular, “Europe # 2” appeared like a pinch at a European festival, and the Dortmund performance of this work was also the first day.
This work recorded on such a stage is a superb professional shot that acts as an official substitute. It has been a staple only for famous TV programs for a long time, but this work has been made into a DVD from the highest peak master. In fact, its image quality and sound quality are completely official, and if the color is vivid, the details are tremendous. As usual, a high-quality version has been uploaded to a major video site, but this work is more than that. The video site version highlights under the name of mastering, and although it looks flashy, the fine parts are crushed and block noise is also scattered. This work does not have such processing, and gives you a taste of the natural visual beauty of the Omoto Master.
ZZ TOP’s enthusiastic performance was about to be peeled off from the taste of Southern rock that was drawn with such ultimate quality. … And it looks like this. I’m not satisfied with the 40-minute broadcast frame, but I’ve concentrated a lot of deadly masterpieces. Delicious covers such as “Dust My Broom” and “I Love the Woman” are also studded there. The most must-see among them is the “Groovy Little Hippie Pad” that decorates the opening. “EL LOCO” is also a masterpiece that boldly introduced a synth sizar, and is a limited rare song that is only played on this tour. From the next tour, the pole position will be taken away by the famous song “Got Me Under Pressure”, but it is the beginning of synth boogie, and the opening scene that is the symbol of “EL LOCO-MOTION Tour” is completely official quality It’s a treasure just to have fun with.
The “EL LOCO” era, which is sandwiched between the famous boards “DEGUELLO” and “ELIMINATOR”, has another degree of attention. その象徴映像が撮影されたのは「1982年５月28日ドルトムント公演」。西ドイツの名物イベント“ROCKPOP IN CONCERT”に出演した際のマルチカメラ・プロショットです。このイベントは1978年から1989年にかけ、ZDF（第2ドイツテレビ）で放送される事を前提に開催されていたフェス。1982年には５月（２日間）と12月（３日間）の合計５日間行われ、ZZ TOPが出演したのは前者。同じ日にはHEARTやJETHRO TULL、STATUS QUO、ジョーン・ジェット＆THE BLACKHEARTS、SAXONがステージを分け合いました。また、ZZ TOP自身に目を向けると“EL LOCO-MOTION Tour”の一環でもありました。まずは、その全景からショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

《『ELIMINATOR』制作》

これが『EL LOCO』にまつわる活動概要。いつも通りに北米偏重で、欧州は約20公演ほど。特に「欧州#2」はヨーロッパのフェスをつまみ食いのように出演したもので、本作のドルトムント公演はその初日でもありました。
そんなステージで記録された本作は、オフィシャル代わりを務める超極上のプロショット。有名TV番組だけに以前から定番でもあったのですが、本作はその最高峰マスターからDVD化されている。実際、その画質・音質は完全オフィシャル級ですし、発色もビビッドならディテールの細やかさも絶大。例によって某大手動画サイトにも高画質版がアップされていますが、本作はそれ以上です。動画サイト版はマスタリングの名の下にハイライトを上げており、一見派手なものの微細部に潰れが発生しており、ブロックノイズも散見している。本作は、そうした加工が施されておらず、大元マスターのナチュラルな映像美を味わわせてくれるのです。
そんな究極クオリティで描かれるのはサザンロックの旨みたっぷりでありつつ、そこから一皮剥けようとしていたZZ TOPの熱演。80年代序盤のプロショットと言えば、当店では『ROCKPALAST 1980（Shades 1376）』がお馴染み。ここではあの名作を足がかりにセットを整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。約40分の放送枠だけに満足はできませんが、必殺の名曲をズラリと濃縮。そこに「Dust My Broom」「I Love the Woman」といった美味しいカバーも散りばめられています。その中でも特に必見なのがオープニングを飾る「Groovy Little Hippie Pad」でしょう。『EL LOCO』でもシンセ・サイザーを大胆に導入した名曲であり、このツアーでしか演奏されていない限定レア曲。次のツアーからは名曲「Got Me Under Pressure」にポールポジションを奪われてしまうわけですが、シンセ・ブギの幕開けであり、“EL LOCO-MOTION Tour”の象徴となる開演シーンを完全オフィシャル級クオリティで楽しめるだけでもお宝なのです。
大名盤『DEGUELLO』『ELIMINATOR』に挟まれて注目度がもうひとつな『EL LOCO』時代。しかし、そのステージは過渡期だからこその貴重度と旨みに溢れていました。その姿を完全オフィシャル級の最高峰マスターで味わえる銘品。どうぞ、存分にお楽しみください。
