This is the 1990/1991 ZZ TOP. It was a large-scale tour that included a European leg in a three-lap US tour, but the Daly City performance of this work is the beginning of that. It was the 28th performance of “North America # 1b”, which was about a month and a half after the album was released.
This work recorded at such a show is a powerful and neat beauty recording. You can tell that it is an audience recording from the lively cheers that can be heard here and there, but the essential performance sound is not like a guest recording. When I listen to it with headphones, I can feel the sound of the hall, but it doesn’t give me a sense of distance at all. The core is powerfully on, it approaches in front of you without a time lag, and the details are strangely delicate. It’s more like a sound board … it’s more like “playing a studio board with a deeper echo setting.” A live album with a slight sprinkle of distant cheers. Certainly there is evidence of the audience, but while it is a soundboard-like listening response, it is different from either of them. I’ve dealt with countless records of many bands so far, but it’s definitely the best, though it’s a kind of unique type … It’s such a live album.
The unique and superb sound is a full show that concentrates on the Warner era, which reigned as a darling of the times. Let’s organize the set here so that you can feel the luxury.

… And it looks like this. While being widely selected from a career spanning 20 years, the thickest ones are the blockbuster trilogy of “ELIMINATOR”, “AFTERBURNER” and “RECYCLER”. Especially delicious is the “RECYCLER” number. Only “My Head’s in Mississippi” can be heard at recent shows, but the others are a rare repertoire that was only played in the early 90’s, and “Lovething” is a genuine, limited edition song for this tour. Even if you look at the classics, there are numbers that you can’t hope for now, such as “Sleeping Bag” and “Ten Foot Pole”. ZZ TOP has few official live works, but this work is a valuable one that you can enjoy full of rare songs with the best sound.
After that, they made a big hit with “GREATEST HITS” and transferred to RCA Records, ending the golden age of commerce. It is just before that that is contained in this work. It is the figure of three people who were sweeping the world with hits next to hits. A gorgeous full show that is different from the RCA era when you started to look at the roots. これが1990年／1991年のZZ TOP。３周の全米ツアーに欧州レッグを交えた大規模ツアーだったわけですが、本作のデーリー・シティ公演はその中でも序盤。アルバム発売から約１ヶ月半となる「北米#1b」の28公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、力強く端正な美録音。ところどころで聞こえる生々しい喝采からオーディエンス録音とは分かるのですが、肝心の演奏音にはおよそ客録らしさがない。ヘッドフォンで聴き込むとホール鳴りも感じ取れはするのですが、それがまったく距離感になってない。芯が力強くオンであり、タイムラグなしに目の前に迫り、ディテールも異様なほど繊細。まるでサウンドボード……と言うよりは、まるで「エコー深めのセッティングでスタジオ盤を再生している」ような感じ。そこに遠い大歓声をほんのりまぶしたようなライヴアルバム。たしかにオーディエンスの証拠もあるけれど、サウンドボード的な聴き応えでありつつ、そのどちらの典型とも違う。これまで幾多のバンドの無数の記録を扱ってきましたが、ちょっと類をみないタイプながら極上なのは間違いない……そんなライヴアルバムなのです。
その個性派・極上サウンドで描かれるのは、時代の寵児として君臨していたワーナー時代を濃縮したフルショウ。その豪華ぶりを実感していただくためにも、ここでセットを整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。20年に及ぶキャリアから幅広くセレクトされつつ、やはり厚いのは『ELIMINATOR』『AFTERBURNER』『RECYCLER』の大ヒット三部作。特に美味しいのは『RECYCLER』ナンバー。「My Head’s in Mississippi」だけは最近のショウでも聴けますが、他は90年代前半にしか演奏されなかったレアなレパートリーですし、中でも「Lovething」は正真正銘、このツアーの限定曲。クラシックスに目を向けても「Sleeping Bag」や「Ten Foot Pole」など、現在は望めないナンバーが散りばめられています。ZZ TOPはただでさえ公式ライヴ作が乏しいわけですが、本作は満載のレア曲も極上サウンドで味わえる貴重な１本なのです。
この後『GREATEST HITS』も大ヒットさせた彼らはRCAレコードへ移籍し、商業的な黄金時代に幕を下ろしました。本作に封じ込められているのは、その直前。ヒットに次ぐヒットで世界を席巻していた３人の姿なのです。ルーツを見つめるようになったRCA時代とは違う豪華絢爛のフルショウ。どうぞ、本作で胸いっぱいにお楽しみください。
