Above, all 6 performances. Ynggway is the fourth time in four years since ALCA TRAZZ’s first visit to Japan. Having teamed up with Joe, who is very popular as a former RAINBOW, he finally set out on the big stage at Nippon Budokan. Nippon Budokan is a special venue for Yngwie, who was in love with Richie Blackmore as a boy. It’s an album that allows you to fully experience the lively fire of the “MADE IN JAPAN” scene (By the way, the Osaka Festival Hall has already been experienced at ALCA TRAZZ).
This work that recorded such a special show also has a special sound. After all, it is a brand name in the brand name that was directly converted to CD from the prestigious Kinney original cassette. Moreover, it is one of the exceptional works in the Kinney Collection. According to the ticket left, it seems that it was recorded in “1st floor southwest row A”, but this is the sweet spot of Nippon Budokan. Of course, the sweet spot changes depending on the strengths and weaknesses of the recorder, but it is said that this position rarely fails.
Actually, the sound of this work seems to prove it with sound, vivid with a thick core and vivid contour. Although it is a Kinney recording that is always clear and clear, this work is a powerful recording with a sound board likeness among them.

Of course, numbers other than “ODYSSEY” are also delicious. Joe isn’t a super high note singer like Mark Balls, but he got it in the part that should have arrived because he was at the peak, and the scat and improvisation that other singers never do are cool. The soulful taste is injected into the neo-classical HR that tends to become dull.
Also, the encore was a special feature unique to Nippon Budokan. Jeff Baxter of THE DOOBIE BROTHERS will appear and co-star in the improvisational blues “Budokan Blues” and “Smoke On The Water”. It is a bluesy corner that differs from the neoclassical taste of the main part, but this is also really interesting. Jeff and Joe have a real blues hobby, while Yngwie competes with a European phrase with Jimichen as a filter. This is also a collaboration unique to the “ODYSSEY” era.

そんな本作に刻まれているのは「1988年８月25日：日本武道館」公演。その極上オーディエンス録音です。「キニー」「1988年」と来れば、オリジナル・カセットから起こされた『DEFINITIVE YOKOHAMA 1988（Zodiac 355）』も記憶に新しいところですが、もちろん本作はあの大名盤の姉妹作になるわけです。そんな姉妹も含め、まずは当時の日程からショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

以上、全６公演。インググヴェイはALCATRAZZの初来日から４年で４度目。元RAINBOWとして人気の高いジョーと組んだ事もあり、遂に日本武道館の大舞台に立ったわけです。少年時代にリッチー・ブラックモアに心酔していたイングヴェイにとって、日本武道館は特別な会場。あの『MADE IN JAPAN』の現場に臨む意欲に燃えたライヴをフル体験できるアルバムなのです（ちなみに大阪フェスティバルホールはALCATRAZZで体験済み）。
それだけ特別なショウを記録した本作は、サウンドも特別。何しろ、あの名門キニーのオリジナル・カセットからダイレクトにCD化した銘品中の銘品。しかも、キニー・コレクションでも特級の１作なのです。残されたチケットによると「１階席南西Ａ列」で録音されたようですが、これこそ日本武道館のスウィート・スポット。もちろん、録音家の得手不得手によってスウィート・スポットは変わるものですが、このポジションはほとんど失敗しないとも言われているのです。
実際、本作のサウンドはそれを音で証明しているようでもあり、骨太な芯も鮮やかな輪郭もえらくビビッド。音色にオーディンスらしさも感じられるのでサウンドボードと間違えはしませんが、クリアさやダイレクト感はそんじょそこらのFM放送にも負けない。常にクリアさで飛び抜けているキニー録音ですが、本作はその中でもサウンドボードっぽさの強いパワフル録音なのです。
そのサウンドで描かれるのは、イングヴェイにとってもジョーにとっても二度となかった“マジカル”なフルショウ。彼らのライヴと言えば『TRIAL BY FIRE』が基準となりますので、ここで比較しながらセットを整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。「Rising Force」「Dreaming(Tell Me)」のようにイングヴェイ／ジョー双方の定番になっていく曲も演奏されますが、「Crystal Ball」「Heaven Tonight」あたりをジョーの歌声で聴けるのは当時ならでは。もっと言えば、「Now Is The Time」「Faster Than The Speed Of Light」はこのツアーでしか演奏していないにも関わらず、『TRIAL BY FIRE』でも聴けない名曲群なのです。もちろん、『ODYSSEY』以外のナンバーも美味しい。ジョーはマーク・ボールズのように超ハイノート・シンガーではないわけですが、絶頂期だったために届くべきパートでは届き、他のシンガー達では絶対にやらないスキャットや即興もカッコイイ。味気なくなりがちなネオクラシカルHRにソウルフルな味わいを注入していくのです。
また、日本武道館ならではのスペシャルだったのがアンコール。THE DOOBIE BROTHERSのジェフ・バクスターが登場し、即興ブルース「Budokan Blues」と「Smoke On The Water」で共演するのです。本編のネオクラシカル・テイストとは異なるブルージーなコーナーなのですが、これも実に面白い。ジェフとジョーは本場のブルース趣味を繰り広げつつ、イングヴェイはあくまでジミヘンがフィルターになった欧州人らしいフレーズで対抗。これもまた『ODYSSEY』時代ならではのコラボレーションなのです。

ネオクラシカルなイングヴェイと、ポップなジョー。２人のコラボレーションはミスマッチになりそうなギリギリの線でマジックを起こし、『ODYSSEY』を異色の大名盤にしました。しかし、その本領は実はステージにこそあった。ポップさのない格調高い過去のネオクラ曲もソウルフルに味付けされ、クラシカルなインプロヴィゼーションと混じり合っていく。そんな奇跡の時代にあって、本作は両者の意欲が最高潮に燃え上がっていた“日本武道館の夜”を名門サウンドで真空パックしたライヴアルバムです。
