YES “OPEN YOUR EYES Tour” in 1998, which is a secret recording in the history of visiting Japan. Introducing the first original recording that conveys the scene.
The performance of “October 9, 1998: Shibuya Public Hall” was imbued with this work. It is the excellent audience recording. YES has always been very popular in the long history of Western music, but for some reason the 1998 Japan Tour (the industry was in transition !?) had few recordings on the market. It’s a good opportunity, so let’s start with such an unexplored Japan schedule.

Above, all 5 performances. Three performances were held in the Kanto area, and this work was a concert that was the middle of the day. This work recorded at such a show is a beautiful recording with a neat sound. It doesn’t feel like a sound board because it’s captured from the second floor, but the core that penetrates the center of the air is powerful, and the details are transmitted firmly along with it. It also sucks in the hall noise, which does not hide the details and adds thickness dynamism and a symphonic pouring feeling.
The factor of this beauty is the master freshness. In the case of recording that includes sound, repeated dubbing can easily crush the details, and the elongation of the core also fluctuates and becomes dirty. However, this work is a treasured original master that was collected by the recorder himself, and of course there are no dubbing marks. The straight stretch without distortion is as sharp as the beam of a laser beam, and you can enjoy every detail even if complicated performances overlap. If this recording had been excavated 23 years ago, it would have been widely loved as a masterpiece representing the 1998 Japan Tour.
The full show of the Igor Korotsev era, which was said to be the “strongest lineup of the 90’s”, is drawn with such beautiful sounds. Speaking of live performances during the Igor era, the official work “HOUSE OF YES” is famous, but the set of this work is not similar. Let’s organize the set while comparing here.

… And it looks like this. I’m about to mark a noteworthy song that I wouldn’t normally be able to hear in “HOUSE OF YES”, but this time it’s the opposite. After all, I’m wearing only 5 super-standard songs, so it’s full of marks. In other words, you can enjoy a lot of Igor version of YES Classics that you can’t listen to officially. Especially when it comes to “Crisis”, all three songs are shown, and you can enjoy it as “Igor version of Crisis”. In addition to the classics, each member’s solo time is also fulfilling. Howe’s acoustic guitar solo features “Arada” and “Sketches In The Sun” from “NOT NECESSARILY ACOUSTIC”, and John’s nursery rhyme series “Akatombo” is also valuable.
After this, YES will create the masterpiece “THE LADDER”, which is said to be the best masterpiece of the 90’s. In the 90’s, there was a lot of fierce separation and gathering, but the Igor era was a time when the band potential was definitely increasing. This work is a valuable live album where you can experience the only performance in Japan in such a lineup with the best sound. A masterpiece that would have been hoped for a permanent preservation press if it had been excavated at the timing when more YES was attracting attention. Please enjoy it carefully.

★ Excellent audience recording of “October 9, 1998: Shibuya Public Hall” performance. The sound is a neat original recording, and the core that penetrates the center of the atmosphere is powerful, and the details are transmitted firmly along with it. The sound of the hall is also fine, and the dynamism of thickness and the symphonic feeling of pouring are added. Although it was the Igor era, which was said to be the “strongest lineup of the 90’s,” there were only five songs doubled with the official work “HOUSE OF YES.” You can enjoy plenty of YES songs with valuable arrangements only in 1998, including John’s “Red Dragonfly”.

YES来日史でも録音の穴場となっている1998年の“OPEN YOUR EYES Tour”。その現場を伝える初登場オリジナル録音が登場です。
そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1998年10月９日：渋谷公会堂」公演。その絶品オーディエンス録音です。長い洋楽史でもYESは常に高い人気を誇ってきたのですが、1998年のジャパン・ツアーはどういうわけか（業界が過渡期だった!?）録音はほとんど出回りませんでした。良い機会ですので、そんな秘境来日のスケジュールから初めてみましょう。

以上、全５公演。関東圏では３公演が実施され、本作はその中日にあたるコンサートでした。そんなショウで記録された本作は、鳴りも端正な美録音。２階席から捉えられているためにサウンドボード的なド密着感ではないのですが、空気感のド真ん中を貫いてくる芯は力強く、それに伴って細部もしっかりと伝わってくる。ホール鳴りも吸い込みつつ、それがディテールを隠さず、厚みのダイナミズムとシンフォニックな降り注ぎ感を添加しているのです。
この美しさの要因は、マスター鮮度でしょう。鳴りを含む録音の場合、ダビングを重ねる事で簡単にディテールが潰れてしまいますし、芯の伸びにも揺らぎが生まれて汚くなってしまう。しかし、本作は録音家本人から蔵出しされた秘蔵のオリジナル・マスターでして、もちろんダビング痕ゼロ。歪みのない真っ直ぐな伸びはレーザー光線の光芒のようにキリッとしており、複雑な演奏が重なり合っても細部までキッチリ楽しめる。もしこの録音が23年前に発掘されていたら、1998年のジャパン・ツアーを代表する名作として、広く愛されてきたことでしょう。
そんな美音で描かれるのは「90年代の最強ラインナップ」とも言われたイゴール・コロツェフ時代のフルショウ。イゴール時代のライヴと言えば、公式作『HOUSE OF YES』が有名ですが、本作のセットは似ても似つかない。ここで比較しながらセットを整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。通常でしたら『HOUSE OF YES』で聴けない注目曲に印を付けるところですが、今回は逆。何しろ、被っているのは超ド定番の５曲だけですので、印だらけになってしまうのです。つまり、それくらい公式では聴けないイゴール版のYESクラシックスが大量に味わえる。特に『危機』に至っては収録３曲を全部披露しており、抜き出して「イゴール版の危機」としても楽しめてしまうのです。また、クラシックスだけでなく各メンバーのソロ・タイムも充実。ハウのアコギ・ソロでは『NOT NECESSARILY ACOUSTIC』の「Arada」「Sketches In The Sun」が取り上げられていますし、ジョンの童謡シリーズ「赤とんぼ」も貴重です。
この後、90年代の最高傑作とも言われる名作『THE LADDER』を創り上げることになるYES。90年代も激しい離合集散を繰り返していましたが、その中でもイゴール時代は確実にバンド・ポテンシャルを高めていた時期でした。本作は、そんなラインナップ唯一の来日公演を極上サウンドで体験できる貴重なライヴアルバムです。もっとYESに注目が集まっているタイミングに発掘されていたら、永久保存プレス化も望めたであろう大傑作。どうぞ、じっくりとお楽しみください。
