Mike Millard’s master excavation, where a large number of historic live albums are born. Finally, the finest recording known as a masterpiece in his collection is finally here.
The masterpiece was recorded on “September 26, 1977 Long Beach Performance”. It is a legendary audience recording that vacuum-packed the site. If you’ve been keeping an eye on this article, you probably know about the recent mirrored master excavation project, but this is the latest release. There are some first appearances like QUEEN and FLEETWOOD MC, but this work is not so, the recording itself is a brand name that has been known for a long time (this is also familiar with our shop “HAIL TO MIKE (Virtuoso 101/102)”). It is an upgrade board.
Such a master sound is essential, but a show is also important. After all, “GOING FOR THE ONE TOUR” has a few songs left in “YESSHOWS”, but there is no official live work or full sound board. There is no. That’s why there is fierce competition for high sound quality, and this work stands at its highest peak. First, let’s look back on the schedule at the time and check the position of the show.

This is the whole picture of “GOING FOR THE ONE TOUR 1977”. Rick Wakeman returns and conducts a large-scale world tour with the “Five Golden Men”. The Long Beach performance of this work was the ninth performance of “North America # 2”.
本 This work recorded at such a show is just a legendary brand. The last edition of “HAIL TO MIKE” also touched on a DAT copy from the master, but this work is longer. The opening part “Firebird” starts 6 seconds before, and after the end of “Roundabout”, it lasts 32 seconds. Furthermore, there are a lot of parts that you couldn’t listen to in the past, such as between “Close To The Edge” and “Wonderous Storie”. Of course, that length is just “evidence of the master.” What really impresses is the master sound that goes through the whole story.
な ら If you have experienced the last edition of “HAIL TO MIKE”, you may have felt that “it may be a master” for the first time, but this is the true master. By comparison, “HAIL TO MIKE” had a very high level of noise reduction even though it was super-excellent, and was “made high quality”. This work has no trace of it, yet it is of equal or higher quality. That’s the overwhelming natural sound of the presence level, with some people playing the YES five people in front of them and turning the tape.
に は I’m sorry if you don’t know “HAIL TO MIKE”, it will not be easy to understand. That said, if you are new to the experience, you can only say “excellent.” Millard is also a big fan of YES in the first place, and is said to have recorded 12 times. Each is said to be historic, but the 1977 Long Beach recording of this work is the highest among them. It’s a transcendental recording that can be called a representative work of Millard in addition to LED ZEPPELIN’s “LISTEN TO THIS EDDIE”, and it is the Omoto master sound.

In particular, “Turn Of The Century” is a masterpiece that has been sealed for nearly 20 years after this tour until “KEYS TO ASCENSION”. You can enjoy it with the band potential of the 70’s.
以上 And more valuable are Dusty Springfield’s cover “Colors Of The Rainbow”, local anthem “Tour Song” and “Flight Jam”. All of them are intro small songs to the next song, but these numbers also make the following great works such as “Turn Of The Century”, “And You And I” and “Awaken” more fantastic and dramatic. The true pleasure of a full-live album, the aesthetics of flow can be fully enjoyed with the finest sound.

異 な り Unlike 1972/1973, which was all about masterpieceism, “GOING FOR THE ONE TOUR” is also different from the 10th anniversary tour that includes medley. It is a super masterpiece of a live album that allows you to experience the full show that you can not taste in the official work or the sound board with the legendary taper master sound. It will no longer be an exaggeration to say that “the masterpiece of YESSHOWS is not a problem” or “the most important work of the II Wakeman era”. Even if you aren’t interested in the history of recordings or tapers, you’ll still find this music and sound a rock treasure. 歴史的なライヴアルバムが大量に誕生しているマイク・ミラードのマスター発掘。遂に、彼のコレクションでも名作として知られる極上録音が遂に登場です。
その名作が記録されたのは「1977年９月26日ロングビーチ公演」。その現場を真空パックした伝説的なオーディエンス録音です。本稿に目を留められた方なら昨今のミラード・マスター発掘事業についてはご存じと思いますが、本作はその最新弾となるもの。QUEENやFLEETWOOD MCのように初登場もありますが、本作はそうではなく、録音自体は以前から知られる銘品（当店の『HAIL TO MIKE（Virtuoso 101/102）』でもお馴染みです）。そのアップグレード盤なのです。
そんなマスター・サウンドこそが要ではありますが、ショウもまた重要。何しろ、“GOING FOR THE ONE TOUR”は『YESSHOWS』の一部に数曲が残されつつ、それ以外に公式ライヴ作もフル・サウンドボードもなく、ショウの全景を知るにはオーディエンス録音に頼るほかはない。だからこそ、高音質競争も激しく、本作こそがその最高峰に立つものなのです。まずは、当時のスケジュールを振り返ってショウのポジションを確かめておきましょう。

これが“GOING FOR THE ONE TOUR 1977”の全体像。リック・ウェイクマンが復帰して“黄金の５人”が揃った大規模なワールド・ツアーを実施。本作のロングビーチ公演は、その中で「北米#2」の９公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、まさに伝説の銘品。前回盤『HAIL TO MIKE』もマスターからのDATコピーとの触れ込みでしたが、本作はさらに長い。開演パートの「火の鳥」も６秒前から始まり、「Roundabout」終演後は32秒も長い。さらに言えば、「Close To The Edge」「Wonderous Storie」の間など、いくつもの曲間で従来では聴けなかったパートがいくつもあります。もちろん、そうした長さは「マスターの証拠」に過ぎない。真に感動的なのは、全編を貫くマスター・サウンドです。
前回盤『HAIL TO MIKE』をご体験の方なら超極上ぶりに「確かにマスターかも知れない」と感じられたと思いますが、本作こそが正真正銘のマスター。比較すると『HAIL TO MIKE』は超極上ではあってもノイズ・リダクションが強めにかけられており、「作られた高音質」だった。本作はその形跡さえもなく、それでいて同等以上にハイクオリティ。それこそ、YESの５人を目の前に演奏してテープを回している人物がいる……そんな存在感レベルの圧倒的なナチュラル・サウンドなのです。
『HAIL TO MIKE』をご存じない方にはピンと来ない説明になってしまって申し訳ありません。とは言え、初体験の方には「超絶極上」と申し上げるしかない。そもそもミラードはYESの大ファンでもあり、12回も録音したとされています。それぞれが歴史的と言われておりますが、本作の1977年ロングビーチ録音はその中でも最高峰とされるもの。それこそLED ZEPPELINの『LISTEN TO THIS EDDIE』ばりにミラードの代表作と言っても良いくらいの超絶録音であり、その大元マスター・サウンドなのです。
そんな録音の奇跡が描き出すのは、貴重な“GOING FOR THE ONE TOUR”のフルショウ。ここで、その内容も整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。定番となるクラシックスを軸としつつ、名盤『究極』のレパートリーも大盤振る舞い。『YESSHOWS』には採用されなかった「Turn Of The Century」「Awaken」も披露される。特に「Turn Of The Century」はこのツアーの後は『KEYS TO ASCENSION』まで20年近くも封印された名曲。それを70年代のバンド・ポテンシャルで楽しめるのです。
そして、それ以上に貴重なのがダスティ・スプリングフィールドのカバー「Colours Of The Rainbow」やご当地賛歌「Tour Song」、そして「Flight Jam」。いずれも次曲へのイントロ的な小曲ではありますが、こうしたナンバーによって続く「Turn Of The Century」「And You And I」「Awaken」といった大作群も一層幻想的でドラマティックに奏でられる。まさにフル・ライヴアルバムだからこその醍醐味、“流れの美学”を極上サウンドでたっぷりと味わえるのです。

大作主義一辺倒だった1972年/1973年とは異なり、メドレーまで盛り込んだ10周年ツアーとも違う“GOING FOR THE ONE TOUR”。公式作でもサウンドボードでも味わえないフルショウを伝説テーパーのマスター・サウンドで極上体験できてしまうライヴアルバムの超傑作です。もはや「YESSHOWSも問題にならない傑作」「第II期ウェイクマン時代の最重要作」と断言しても過言ではないでしょう。たとえ録音史やテーパーに興味がない方だったとしても、この音楽とサウンドがロックの秘宝である事は実感できるはず。それこそ名盤『究極』と同価値になるほど究極的なライヴアルバム。どうぞ、永久保存プレス２CDで存分にご堪能ください。
