It is the same composition as the powerful live set “LIVE IN TOKYO 2017 (Amity 393)” introduced the other day. However, although the composition is the same, the quality is quite different. The Amity board was also very popular with the press class sound, but this work is “All Master” and “All over” for all three shows!
Initially, this work and Amity board are similar in composition, but the concept is different. Although both use the original master who was handed down directly from the recordingist himself, the concept of the Amity board was “a face-to-face confrontation with a head home YES recording and a recording houseer who came to Japan last November” Please refer to the explanation of “LIVE IN TOKYO 2017”). In contrast, this work is simply “Vertex recording of each day”. Scrutinize each one of the masters one after another carefully and compare carefully. We only include the master who decided “This is the best!” Until the blind test which hid the name of the recording house with the staff total appearance. Of course, since it is a vertex, I have permanently stored and pressed it. If I eventually thought that I wanted to press even though Amity board master was selected as the best, another record was fortunate in spite of three performances. Even for those who have “LIVE IN TOKYO 2017”, you can enjoy the full story without covering one.
And the quality that won the carefully selected top master decision game is exquisite. “LIVE IN TOKYO 2017” was also a work of a recordingist who won the press with the head home YES, but this work is “on top”. Of course, although the color shades differ only in each of the three performances, different performers, different recorders, different positions, the sounds of thick & thick sound suitable for calling “as if it is a soundboard” are reverberating, and the ringing of “when it comes to the audience” Beautiful wearing a little bit. Every range is even clearer than the Amity board, so details are also clearly emphasized, but especially wonderful is deep bass. John Anderson’s Angelic Voice gets down from heaven, and Rick Wakeman’s gorgeous habit spreads out in his chest just like a church organ. Supporting two people supporting such protagonists is also wonderful. It is not Alan · White but Bill · Blueford, which comes from drummer Lou Molino III. と、このようになっています。本作は、“オーチャードホール”公演３日間をディスク２枚ずつに配した６枚組。先日ご紹介した強力ライヴセット『LIVE IN TOKYO 2017（Amity 393）』と同じ構成です。しかし、構成は同じであっても、クオリティはまったく違う。Amity盤もプレス級サウンドで大好評でしたが、本作は３公演とも「すべて別マスター」かつ「すべて上回っている」のです！
そもそも、本作とAmity盤は構成こそ似ているものの、コンセプトが異なる。どちらも録音家本人から直接譲られたオリジナル・マスターを使用してはいるものの、Amity盤のコンセプトは「昨年11月に来日した本家YES録音と録音家を揃えた対決」でした（詳しくは『LIVE IN TOKYO 2017』の解説をご参照ください）。それに対し、本作はシンプルに「各日の頂点録音」。続々と到着するマスターの１つひとつを精査し、丁寧に比較。スタッフ総出で録音家の名前を隠したブラインド・テストまでして「これがベスト!!」と決定したマスターのみを収録しています。もちろん、頂点ですから永久保存プレスいたしました。もし、結果的にAmity盤マスターがベストに選出されてもプレスしようとは考えておりましたが、幸運にも３公演とも別録音がトップに輝いた。『LIVE IN TOKYO 2017』をお持ちの方にも、１本も被らずに全編お楽しみ頂けます。
そして、厳選トップマスター決定戦を勝ち抜いたクオリティは、まさに絶品。『LIVE IN TOKYO 2017』も、本家YESでプレスを勝ち取った録音家の作品でしたが、本作は“その上”。もちろん、３公演それぞれが別公演・別録音家・別ポジションなだけに色合いは異なるものの、「まるでサウンドボード」と呼ぶに相応しい骨太＆肉厚な楽音が響き渡り、「オーディエンスなればこそ」の鳴りをほんのりと纏った美麗ぶり。すべての音域がAmity盤よりも一層クリアでディテールもクッキリと浮き立つのですが、特に素晴らしいのは重低音。会場の床を振るわせるリアリティを感じさせつつ、うねるベースラインは音の粒まで克明。もちろん、ド迫力でもビビることなく艶やかですし、その重低音の上で踊る中高音もキラ星のようです。
そんな頂点サウンドで描かれるショウはYES ft. ARWだけがなし得る、輝く“YESミュージックの夕べ”。ジョン・アンダーソンのエンジェリック・ヴォイスが天から降り注ぎ、リック・ウェイクマンの華やかな手癖がチャーチ・オルガンさながらに胸に広がる。そして、そこに鮮やかでシャープなトレヴァー・ラビンのギターが切り込む……そのすべてに懐かしい“YES印”が刻印されていながら、総体では聴いたことのないアレンジ／フレーズが噴水のように止めどもなく溢れ出るのです。
そんな主役３人を支えるサポート２人も素晴らしい。ドラマーのルー・モリーノ３世から浮かんでくるのは、アラン・ホワイトではなく、ビル・ブルーフォード。単にテクニカルで手数が多いのではなく、ビートにもスピード感が溢れており、複雑な曲展開でもエッジも鋭くキビキビとキメる。それがリックの華麗さとラビンのシャープなギターをさらに鮮やかにしてくれるのです。そして、ベースのイアン・ホーナル。彼は日本公演の直前になって急遽参加しただけに、ベースラインも堅実でこそあれ、再現の域は出ていません。しかし、彼が輝くのはコーラス。リー・ポメロイよりもグッとクリス・スクワイアに似た歌声で、ジョンのヴォーカル・ハーモニーは一層“YES感”に溢れている。YES ft. ARWは主役３人の名前こそ全面に出ていますが、決して“３人＋オマケ”ではない。“５人組の新生YES”として十分以上に美しい、完成された音楽世界を築き上げているのです。
何はともあれ、東京３日間の頂点……いえ、世界的にもトップの名録音集です。地方公演や今後のワールドツアーからどんな録音が飛び出すか分かりませんが、今この時点でYES ft. ARWを聴くのであれば、本作こそがベストなのは間違いありません。
Amity盤『LIVE IN TOKYO 2017』は、“本家YESとの対決”という変化球もありましたが、本作はストレートの剛速球“頂点サウンド”。それを３公演分たっぷりと味わえるビッグな６枚組。どうぞ、思う存分お楽しみください。
